The Pebble Pools Concept

The Structure Pebblepools have pioneered the introduction of the Shotcrete method of concrete projection in Europe. Using this system a truly monolithic (jointless) shell is created which is engineered to be self supporting. The Shotcrete system is the best way to reliably and repeatedly do so.

Design possibilities®Both the Shotcrete process and the PebbleTec interiors

mean that any format of design is possible. Freeform shapes, natural rock pools, classical, razor edge overflow, deck level… every swimming pool concept that exists can be built more reliably and efficiently. Pebblepools has an in-house design facility as part of it's service and they will produce projects in their entirety or work with architects to ensure that all possibilities are explored.

A detailed history of the evolution of Pebblepools is included on the following page but the philosophy of the company can be summarised quite easily:

• Pebblepools source, own and maintain all their own equipment and machinery – Programming and planning are within their control so delivery dates and performance is reliable.

• They have a large permanent construction staff meaning they do not rely on sub-contractors – The specialist machinery and techniques they employ make this essential but this also provides reliability and consistency of performance.

• They are constantly researching and developing ideas and techniques, both to offer new features and improve on existing ones – Active R & D combined with the worldwide network of pool builders to which they belong, ensure the client is not being given yesterday's technology in a permanently evolving environment.

A testimony to the successful growth of Pebblepools, was the creation and appointment of a sister company in 1998. Pebblepools until that point had been the only European approved

®builder with whom PebbleTec from the USA ®would work. In 1998 PebbleTec approached

Pebblepools and asked them to consider expanding their horizons into the marketing and maintenance of a Europe- wide franchising

®operation. PebbleTec were confident that Pebblepools had the skills and corporate strength to train, supply and support other pool builders who were interested in following the

®model. EuroPebbleTec was formed and to date there are 15 registered licensees throughout Europe who are emulating Pebblepools' success in Portugal.

thNow, as Pebblepools celebrate their 20 year of operation, significant evolutions are taking place: the company embraced worldwide renowned projects and lauched a new master licensingprogramme that will expand Pebblepools to allcontinents.

The architecture of the house is important when

deciding on the style of the pool – classical or

freeform.

Whether a client has a priority to swim all year

round, to swim for exercise, if children or non

swimmers are a particular consideration, if the

villa may be let in the future, etc.

A garden setting is best suited to a natural rock

pool, a courtyard to a deck level classic look, etc.

On an open sloping site with a view, a razor

edge pool creates a stunning effect. In a closed

Razor edge pools can be used to create a

and bubble features.

The theme or feeling to the area can also be

altered by the use of materials and details

in which Pebblepools specialize. Artificial

rockwork can be used for the well known jungle

style rocks and cascades but can also create a

"Roman Ruin" or "Castle" effect when suitable.

The list is endless and of course, above all

else, the owners personal preferences are

paramount. The evolution of the design process

is inevitably quite lengthy if the ultimate

solution is to be achieved. Pebblepools has a

dedicated design department to help architects

and guide them through possibilities or, where

the pool is a stand alone project, provide a

complete in-house design service working

directly with the owners or developers.

The engineering system which they have

developed addresses many issues which are

often ignored. It involves a sophisticated level

control system and dual filtration. Without

these the razor edge effect is often lost when

the wall becomes visible, pool maintenance is

difficult and on occasions non-return valves fail

with catastrophic results. Pebblepools' system

guarantees the perfect effect .

With traditional razor edge pools the overflow

water was stored in an underground tank which

was often neglected in terms of maintenance.

Pebblepools evolved the idea of creating

a lower, feature pool which serves as the

These are ideal for regular spa users who

want a high level of hydro-massage facility. A

polyester or concrete shell is built into a garden

or terrace environment. The spa is always

hot while owners are in residence and has an

independent filtration system.

OVErFlOw spAs

Overflow spas meanwhile offer a fantastic

combination of water feature, cascade and play

area which, at the touch of a button converts to a

heated spa facility. Warm up can be as fast as 45

minutes, depending on the heating method, and

every bathing session effectively uses fresh water.

dry-mIx "guNITE" prOjECTION

With this system a dry mortar mix is projected

by highly compressed air to a nozzle where, as

it exits, it is hydrated (wet) when it is mixed

with water. It begins to dry as it passes through

the air and on impact the air is expelled so

a very strong concrete is formed. "Gunite"

is very strong and is used in swimming pool

construction, boat building and tunnelling.

In pool construction the only disadvantage of

"Gunite" is the speed of application which often

means a pool will take several days to produce

and joints are necessary.

wET mIx "shOTCrETE" prOjECTION

"Shotcrete" is the worldwide industry standard

term for wet mix projected concrete. The

concrete is ready mixed (to a special formula)

at a concrete plant and delivered in 6-10m3

loads to the construction site. The "shotcrete

machine" is a very large hydraulically driven

piston pump which pushes the wet mix down

the lines to the nozzle where high pressure air

is introduced to "shoot" the mix out and against

the steel and shuttering. The special mixture

can be sprayed, by competent staff, directly

onto vertical surfaces and within 20-40 minutes

the mixture is ready to be trimmed or "cut" to

the exact internal profile required.

The difference between PebbleTec® and

traditional glass mosaic tile is plain to see but

several other systems exist which emulate

the exposed aggregate look. The important

point though is that none of these use quartz

stone as the base material – PebbleTec® does.

Quartz stone is hard (geologically speaking it

is 97% of the way towards being a diamond).

It is very difficult therefore to grind or cut it

back to cover up mistakes in the application

so it is critical that the installation crew are

experienced, competent and in possession of

the correct tools.

• Only registered PebbleTec® applicators can

offer these products.

• The material is not pre-bagged (with cement)

so has no shelf life and the customers are

guaranteed of cement quality.

• The base of quartz stone gives a far superior

surface in terms of durability and longevity than

any alternative using calcium based stone.

From a beach in New Zealand, pebbles are

excavated, graded, sterilised and shipped

around the world using methods fully licensed

by the New Zealand government and approved

by environmental agencies. Even the packaging

is biodegradable and heat sealed and the whole

process avoids all pollutant bi-products and

harmful emissions.

On site the pebbles are mixed with a cement

compound and sprayed onto the shell to give

a beautiful natural looking interior finish. The

selection of colours combines with natural

oxides in the cement and additives, such as

ceramic chip or coloured glass, to produce a

unique variety of water tones.

There are no corners, no joints and no sharp

edges. The result:

A smaller pebble of 1mm which is polished with

a diamond disc after application to produce a

flatter, smoother surface for more traditional

pools. A tile band is used at water level to

produce a classical look

Often used to create a theme or atmosphere,

artificial rockwork is also used to good effect to

disguise service building, pump houses etc or

retaining walls and level changes.

AuTOmATEd CONTrOl sysTEms

Pebblepools approve and use Aqualink® and

Dinotec® intelligent control systems. These give

the owner ultimate control over their pool to

set or override temperatures, running times,

spa settings, lighting, etc from one single LED

screen or over the internet. Garden lights and

other functions can be incorporated.

uNdErwATEr wINdOws

Underwater windows are quite often a good

solution for providing natural light to an under

terrace space, which can then be utilized,

effectively gaining extra space for a gym, office

or perhaps a sauna and relaxation area.

IN-FlOOr ClEANINg

The PV3 automatic vacuum system is becoming

more and more popular and consists of a matrix

of pop-up valves across the floor of the pool.

These rise in zones and push the debris towards

the main drain where it is drawn from the pool

and filtered out. This system also provides very

good chemical and thermal distribution so

increasing the health of the water naturally.

TrEATmENT sysTEms

Pebblepools offer Salt Water chlorination, pH

and chlorine auto-dosing, DIN UV disinfection

systems, Ionisation systems etc. A remote

monitoring service exists for commercial pools

to log levels and raise alarms as necessary.

hybrId & spECIAlITy hEATINg sysTEms

Pebblepools have developed their own

‘Hot Tank’ system which economically and

reliably can produce guaranteed swimming

temperatures at any time for an uncovered

pool. The system utilizes two bodies of water

and a bespoke software system to mix the pool

water to the desired temperature at the correct

time. The owner simply selects the time and

temperatures desired and massive overnight

heat (energy) losses are avoided.

A simple addition to a pool resting bench or

built into the floor of the pool, these provide

hours of fun for children of all ages. They are

operated by a poolside air button which can be

programmed as on-off or on-timer off.

Pebblepools install all forms of automatic

covers and also offer the revolutionary

Heat$avr® liquid cover system, ideal for pools

where a cover is not desirable. Heating with all

forms, (gas, oil, heat pump, solar) are available

from Pebblepools who have qualified installers

on their retained staff.

These can be supplied as a ready made unit but

often Pebblepools will make use of a natural

gradient to build these into a piece of garden

architecture. They can be lined with fiberglass

or polished Pebblefina® for a very natural look.
