expectation for production quality and production reliability. It all began 25 years ago with an engineering office with great experience in building test equipment. Modus became a high-tech business company with German design & development and in-house manufacturing of its test systems.

The first prototypes were built in the year 2000 at the headquarters in Willich. Today, there are more than 600 systems in service. This makes modus the Euro-pean market leader for scanner AOIs.

We believe the main reason for our success is based on a close and trusted relationship with our customers. Our application engineers and software development team always try to guarantee, where possible a fast reaction time to support and service questions. Our manufactu-ring proccess due to ISO 9000 incudes a CE- declarati-on of conformity.

About modusFor several decades now modus has been operating as a pioneering force in the AOI sector. Our objective is to develop fast scanner systems for industrial use. Modus develops, produces and sells automatic test and ins-pection systems (AOI) for production control of volume manufacturing.

The increasing miniaturization of electronic devices plus the escalating demands towards quality control and cost effectiveness makes it necessary to have inspection

units, which are fast, reliable and easy to set up.The modus inspection systems are available both as in-line and off-line. With the ultra-fast scan speed, 100% inspection of visible parts can be introduced into a pro-duction line without any loss or reduction to the speed of the line.

Winning head start because of protected system by utility model

T e c h n o l o g y

The latest generation of the modus scanner, the MLD1200 captures the images in one pass, one or both sides of the PCB up to 420 mm x 550 mm in a timeframe of 3 to 25 seconds maximum. This applies for all processes, conformal coating, post placement, post reflow or post wave inspec-tion with a scanning resolution of 1200 dpi and a structure resolution of 21 μm.

Multi-LED-illuminationThe modus systems use a technological break-through of a parallax free scanner unit with eight Multi-LED light sources. The LED strips with special lenses give a homo-geneous light. Whereas the application of different colors under a certain illumination angle makes it possible to have a clearer inspection and definition of the solder joints, THT components and conformal coatings on the PCB´s. View without parallax errorA custom designed lens gives a parallax and distortion free picture because the streams of light fall absolutely parallel from the test object on to the CCD. The place-ment or CAD data which is imported from GERBER files is the basis for the test program. In this way, it is impos-sible for parallax errors to arise, especially in the case of

the small components. Incorrect solder joints and terminations are found easily. The identification of these poor process errors helps to in-crease production yields and guarantee increased quality. The modus protected technology is an innovative proprie-tary development, it is utilised in all our scanner systems.

Process Quality Control with the modus CC AOI

Since 2007 modus manufacture conformal coating inspection Systems, even the demand on market was low. Up to now modus sold a bunch of so called CC AOI Systems with the latest technology.

The integrated UV-LED cluster used for inspection of conformal coatings which contains UV-trace. The UV-light generate fluorescence light, this will be used for optical inspection, where it detect also foreign objects on surface.The modusAOI software detect foreign objects down to 70µm and recognized errors sets, due to PCB surface impurities

Process optimization with the modus THT AOI

AOI-prozesses

Typical modern production processes, consist mainly of a series of single steps. For example combi-nations of electronic and mechanical parts are assembled to become a module. The parts are inserted and adjusted, screws or locking devices are used to secure and warning labels are applied. To receive a flawless end product and at the same time reduce the costs for quality control and on-going maintenance, inspection is required to make sure faults do not arise. AOI (Automatic Optical Inspection) allows an economical test of various processes. Automatic and manual fabrication steps can therefore be verified using many diverse criteria. There is a demand for a flexible solution; it should provide a test with different requirements and without an elaborate and complicated test program.

For an integrated, post-wave inspection solution in the production process, the development of a new optical test system for mounting under a conveyor was develo-ped. The modus AOI MLD1200-IUA checks solder joints and parts directly after wave or selective soldering. The reliable identification of open or incomplete solder joints, solder bridges, missing pins as well as the shape of the solder joint from the wave-solder side reduces test and in-field failures. The modus AOI offers the additional benefit that expen-sive flip stations are not required. The gain of space allows simultaneous inspection of the boards from above and from below. At the repair station, the fault data is displayed, the repair is documented and fault condition

Trace-ability using Barcode or Data-Matrix codes is supported and can be collected by the AOI from above as well as from below with the modus double-sided system. The modus S1-IDA is available as either in-line or off-line. They have been developed over the years based on customer needs and requests and they are offered exclusively by modus High-Tech. Modus AOI systems, saves time, space and therefore money. The typical pay-back period is between eight to twelve months.

AOI Camera systemsOptical inspection with the modus MCSIO allows for inexpensive and flexible test of the individual pro-duction processes.

A combination of the 42 megapixel HD (high-defini-tion) system camera with the powerful and reliable modus AOI-software means validation of mechanical assemblies, presence, position and interchange of plugs, stickers, fixings, reading of barcodes and data-matrix-codes can be checked thoroughly.

The system is suitable for frequent changes of performance requirements. The flexible setup allows the unit to be used for batch testing/inspection as a standalone or can be mounted for in an in- line ope-ration. To have an even higher resolution or test area, several cameras can be activated and/or combined for a test program. The optional integration in a function test, recording the inspection results (traceability) and the integrated capture of barcode and data-matrix codes allows an optimal observation and optimization of the process (closed-loop).

The latest intuitive software 9.10 supports all camera and image scanner systems from modus. Fast and high-precision image processing guarantees a reliable interpretation of the test object in a short space of time. Test programs can be exchanged between the different image scanner systems without compatibility problems, ensuring the highest degree of flexibility for our customers.

More than 20 years of knowhow are incorporated into the technologies of the modus AOI-systems. Long lifecycle of the equipment as well as low downtime in the production process are the most important demands in today’s production lines. It is essential that the production staff is able to operate the equipment easily and efficiently.

Training Modus has developed a multi-stage program to support their customer’s training requirements. Instruction in groups or as individuals, for short or long periods, on-site or at the modus facility in Willich, Germany – special tailored programs are available.

Setup and startupEach customer, each manufacturer and each production process has different requirements; therefore modus provides a maximum of flexibility and professionalism to meet these requirements. The modus units are custo-mised and ready to run when delivered and therefor customers can install the system into the line straight away. The service and support team at modus trains the equipment operators and together, the approval and signoff of the equipment is completed.

CertificationBesides the support, which is guaranteed by our own technical staff, modus has also built up a certification program for its service partners. The certified partners are trained and assessed to the very highest standards before they achieve the official status “Modus Certificated Service Partner”.

Local service on siteAlthough modus AOI-systems do not need a lot of preventive maintenance, it is recommended to organise a regular check up. It extends the lifetime and the reliability of the systems. Mechanical components may exhibit signs of natural aging. A once per year preventive maintenance call is advisable and reduces downtime. Three versions of service contracts are available for the customers.
