• Command from self powered switch
sent to actuator but no Return
message can be received to confirm
receipt
With Battery (bi-directional )
• Command sent from battery powered
switch sent to actuator and return
message can be received to confirm
receipt
• If no confirmation received the switch
resends message two more times
• If still no receipt the mesh network will
re-route the message through other
nodes until completed, provided
system set up in Comfort mode

Typical transmission distances
• Typical transmission distance 30-50m indoors. i.e. 2 walls and a
ceiling – depending upon materials
• Programming devices in Comfort Mode will increase range by
allowing the “Routing” of messages
Transmission
absorbed by
the fabric of
the building

Where next?
• We’ve looked at the evolution of wiring
accessories, and the new modular grid
system
• We’ve discussed the Automated Home
• What about the “Smart Home” ?..............

The “Smart Home”
What is a Smart Home?
• A step up from the Automated Home
• One where the control is based on a constant
stream of information from the user or the
environment to provide effective control of the home
• One that can react to changing energy tariffs and
demand side control
• One that allows user to understand energy usage
and how to better manage it
• One tailored to the users lifestyle

You want a Smart Home?
So why do you want a Smart Home?
• A Smart Home system will enable you to take control of your home from anywhere in the world
• Control your heating, automatic operation of lighting, control of blinds, remote messaging, let you know who’s at home
• Benefits include energy saving, comfort, convenience and security
• …..and of course the factor!
37 © 2013 Eaton. All Rights Reserved..
The Smart Home Evolution
• The UK government has mandated the roll out of more than 27M smart meter installations over the next 7 years
• Every smart meter installation will have its own secure Home Area Network (HAN) and every occupier will have the potential to access their energy data by means of an In Home Display (IHD) or a Consumer Access Device (CAD) should they wish
• The data available will include current and historic energy consumption, costs and time of use data which will enable a consumer or a Smart Home system to react accordingly and potentially save energy
