CIRCULAR ECONOMY & RELATED CONCEPTS
1. Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature
2. Blue economy: Using the resources available...the waste of one product becomes the input to create a new cash flow
3. Systems Thinking: Ability to understand how things influence one another within a whole
4. Cradle to Cradle: industry adopts the reuse and service-life extension of goods as a strategy of waste prevention, regional job creation, and resource efficiency in order to decouple wealth from resource consumption
5. Biosphere Rules: Implementing closed loop production processes
6. Industrial Ecology: Study of material and energy flows through industrial systems
7. Resource Recovery: Using wastes as an input material to create valuable products as new outputs
CIRCULAR ECONOMY – A NEW PARADIGM?
“In an organizational context, the CE refers to a systemicapproach to the
design of processes, products/services and business models, enabling sustainable economic growth by
managing resources more effectively as a result of making the flow of materials more circular andreducing and ultimately eliminating waste.
The energy required to fuel this, needs to be extremely efficient and renewable by nature. …”

CIRCULAR TALKS & MUSIC
The Challenge: 15 million kg of headphones are thrown every year either due to simple mechanical faults or because of technology advances/ inflight use etc. How can we capture the value that is being lost in this discarded material? The Solution: Gerrard Street has designed — beautiful, high sound quality headphones, modular and *easily disassemblable to facilitate easy repair, refurbishment or upgrade. How its circular? the headphones are offered on a subscription basis allowing customers to upgrade/repair for free; as well as incentivising Gerrard Street to provide the most durable product so that the revenue period is maximised.
The Result❖ 85% of components are reused; ❖ affordable; ❖ high quality product; high level of service; ❖ less virgin materials to create new headphones.

REPLACE PLASTIC/STYROFOAMCassava – packaging material of the circular economy
CBPAK, Brazil : Using non-edible cassava starch to make single-use food containers that replace problematic plastics.
CBPak’s Claudio Bastos, well aware of the environmental impact associated with the existing $50 million/annum national food packaging industry, that comprises mainly single use & containers.
End of Life: Food packaging is composted, rather than disposed in landfil

CASE STUDY-8
Ecological criteria embedded in the public procurement process Berlin, Germany
The sustainability criteria applies to all of the city government’s procurement worth around €4-5 billion each year. (Berlin’s GDP was €125 billion in 2016).
Cost savings of around €38 million per year.
Based on the environmental and financial benefits of 15 product groups and services (all the public procurement benefits per year for Berlin):
• Particulate reduction by around 12 tonnes of diesel soot, bringing associated health benefits from clean air.
• Greenhouse gas reduction by 47%, or 350,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent• Wood savings of 9,300 t of wood• Natural stone saving of 2,000,000 tonnes• Cost savings of around €38 million.
