This receipt is for $39.95 andis evidence of a Christmas gift

purchased on Christmas Eve ata very crowded mall, when I was

desperate for the perfect gift for mywife and my daughter.

As I walked through the mall,a man from a kiosk in themiddle of the mall approachedme and asked me if I had any

important women in my life. I responded in theafrmative.

He took my hand and began

scrubbingmy f i nge rna i l and applying lotion and oils.He convinced me that this was

the perfect gift for my wife: abox containing skin care lotionand nail products made fromminerals from the Dead Sea. Mywife and my daughter love it! █

wrong receipt.On this one I bought two t-shirtsfor my dad for Hanukkah, andthey were a total of eight dollars,

so they were four dollars apiece - a little expensive for astore closing. But, they neededto be washed, they were

not soft at all █

So last weekend I went groceshopping. I usually do my groceshopping at BJ’s. So one of tthings I bought that day w

honey hamalong with other things, bthis is what really happenewhich was surprising to m

When it was time to pay, the guof course, priced… not pricedSCANNED each item. Thawhat I mean. So when he gto the honey ham, he scannit and gave me the price everything. The total cost seem

a little too muchIt seemed more than whatthought it would be. It w

shocking



So even though I was uncertain,I went along and just waitedfor him to give me the receipt.I saw the honey ham cost$30 instead of the $3.02 it

was supposed to be. That is ahuge difference!So I go to the guy and tell himthe mistake. He doesn’t knowwhat to do so he sends me to themember’s service desk. So then

I go there and this really nice ladydoes everything to x the problemand gives me back the $30, butit was just shocking to me that

I almost paid $30 for ½a pound of honey ham █



This receipt is from my pre-college shopping trip. I wentwith my cousin and her friend,and I had to stock up on

everything from Targetf o r , you know, l i v i ng i nthe do rms and s tu f f…shampoo , t oo thpas te , and

all that good stuff.It’s pretty long because I had a lot toget, and then I lugged it all to RIT █



So, what I’m doing...I’m cooking for eight people aboard a 1925schooner in St. Croix. I’m working with an extremely limited budget,and I consider spices to be something of an investment. When I

arrived on the boat, there were spices, but they were mostly quiteold, which means that you need to use about a handful when a pinchwould sufce with fresher spices.

I make a lot of curries, chili, and other heavily seasoned dishes, partlybecause such meals are delicious, and partly because it’s’ a way ofdressing up really cheap ingredients into something more interesting.

A few 89 cent cans of beans and tomatoes, with enough seasoning,can be a delicious, lling chili, and a head of cauliower, a few cansof diced tomatoes, and an appropriate blend of spices, can be adelicious aloo gobi. A wide variety is key. In the long run, a week onground turkey and chicken breasts is well worth it, considering howmuch better the food will be in the future.

So now, I have new spices! I got to go to a whole different store thisweek, and I spent an entire day’s food budget on spices. I couldn’thelp it; I’ve been without so many of them for so long, and am runningout of others, and they were all there, and, and...and that’s why nomeat got bought this week. It would take a stronger man than I topass up bulk turmeric. Or cloves, since for months now I’ve beensubstituting allspice and hope. The saddest part was all the spices

I couldn’t afford. I kept picking up this container of garam masala,looking around guiltily, and putting it back on the shelf. And saffron.

Don’t even get me started on saffron.There was this little test-tubey bottle of it, with a cool looking cork,and I knew I couldn’t afford it, but I had to make a great physical effortto put it down and walk away. █

Hey, this receipt is from,uh, Walmart for The

Dark Knighton DVD. It cost $16.28. I gotit as a Christmas gift this year;it’s my favorite movie. I thinkit’s the greatest superheromovie made ‘cause its actionpacked, and it keeps you on the

edge of your seat,a n d t h e r e ’ s u s u s a l l y a n

unexpected twist in each scene. It’s a great overallmovie, and I’m glad I got it. Itwas denitely my favorite gift! █
