Leaders of the world’s most powerful developing states at

the BRICS summit in Durban have agreed to form a development bank, which will be a counterweight to the IMF and the World Bank. Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said the Brics Bank will finance infra-structural development. “The emerg-

ing economies group has moved from rhetoric to action, and this is the crowning achievement of the event.” Russian Finance Minister Anton Si-luanov said they will meet next month to see who puts up the proposed US$100 billion seed money, and how contributions will be determined. The World Bank has also declared its support for the proposed bank. During the event Denel Aviation CEO Mike Kgobe said they reached

agreement with a Russian helicop-ter company for a joint maintenance agreement on the African continent. “We identified a gap in the market in terms of a capability to support Rus-sian helicopters flying in Africa.” The fifth Brics summit is being host-ed under the theme ‘Brics and Africa: Partnership for Development, Inte-gration and Industrialisation’. Meanwhile, besieged Syrian Presi-dent Bashar al-Assad urged Brics

members to appeal for peace in his war ravaged country. Human rights organisations are furiously lobbying to have the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa con-demn Assad’s government for turning its guns on its own people. However, at least two Brics mem-bers, Russia and China, have previ-ously shown support for al-Assad’s regime. Although indications at the summit are that he may be disap-

pointed, Assad hopes to get support from all five member countries. Soon after his meeting with South African President Jacob Zuma ended this week, the press sought Russian President Vladimir Putin’s opinion over the Syrian issue. When asked if he would support a United Nations ecurity Council reso-lution allowing humanitarian aid over the border to Syria he evasively re-sponded: “We’ll think about it.”

Last weekend SA broke the Guin-ness World Record for the high-

est number of people simultaneously bouncing on space hoppers, breaking the record by over 1 000 bouncers. The event at Marks Park, Joburg, shortly before Earth Hour was hosted by 49M as support for the global call to save energy. Energy saving move-ment 49M’s spokesperson Kannan Lakemeeharan said the number of bouncers was 2 943, surpassing the previous record of 1 505. “This is a symbol of our commitment to use en-ergy wisely. We are sure that all South Africans will continue to support the 49M campaign where we ask each of you to switch off when not using, and remember your power to change the world,” he added. The event was attended by Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba, Eskom executives, Miss Earth Final-ists and several local celebrities. Min-ister Gigaba said this showed com-mitment to preserving resources.

“The impact of the event at a global level is remarkable. The amount of discussion around this event in social media shows an increase in social consciousness.” World Record adjudicator, Pravin Patel said it was enjoyable observing so many people partaking in this ac-tivity. “Participants included children, parents and grandparents, which was exciting because we usually observe individual records such as people ty-ing their bowties, vehicles breaking on ice and other incredible attempts, but it was exciting to see one with so many people.” 49M joins SA in its list of record breaks, including the world’s longest boerewors, most steel cans collected in one month, largest bubble gum mosaic and the largest vuvuzela. Last year 49M, called upon South Africans to support Earth Hour 2012 by switching off their lights and beat-ing the previous record of 350 MW. As a result, South Africans saved 402MW in observation of the event. Visuals of the global event are avail-able on YouTube and 49M.co.za.

Remember the safety tipsAt about the same time last year,

when it was just towards the Easter weekend and holidays, I wit-nessed an accident in which a wom-an was knocked down by the Rea Vaya bus in Noord Street in town. Your newspaper published my let-ter warning the community, about traffic safety in the Rea Vaya bus lanes. During that week the mu-nicipality conducted a traffic safety campaign in that area. But today it seems pedestrians have forgotten all the safety tips they were given, and are once more exposing themselves to danger in the bus lanes. There are dangerous parts of the Rea Vaya lanes in Twist Street, where there are almost always many people in the streets. At the Wolma-rans Street turn-off the buses often find many people crossing the street. The robots may turn green for the bus, and some pedestrians think the

green is meant for them and cross the street, and sometimes have to run when the bus appears. In the Bok Street intersection peo-ple often cross Twist Street at the ro-bots safely, but may forget to watch out for the bus coming along the lane. In that area some people walk in the bus lane instead of the pave-ment, which may cause accidents. In the Noord Street section it is more complicated and dangerous. There the place has even more pe-destrians than the other sections, and taxis crossing the lane and another Rea Vaya coming from the opposite direction add to the congestion. To be safe pedestrians must stick to the pavements and always watch out for the bus and the taxis. The driv-ers must also drive slower to prevent accidents.Nelly HlatshwayoJoubert Park

Militants to restart warN’Djamena - Rebels have threatened to restart fight-ing against President Idriss Deby’s government, two years after both agreed to stop fighting. Making the threat by telephone from Doha in Qatar, rebel leader Timane Erdimi said after two years they are tired of waiting. The Union of Forces of Resistance (UFR) stopped fighting after Chad and Sudan agreed to end their proxy wars in 2010 by halting support for fighters in each other’s country. Deby seized power in a 1990 military coup and has since won elections whose fairness has been ques-tioned by international observers. Erdimi led rebels in a 2008 coalition which attacked the capital, besieging Deby in his palace. They later withdrew, accusing France of backing Deby. Deby’s critics say three polls since the coup were unfair and he is a corrupt dictator. “As soon as we put down our weapons he refused to begin talks,” Erdimi said. Erdimi, a nephew and former aide of Deby, said not all the rebels had been disarmed, and were now mass-ing between the Sudanese/Chad border.

Govt to talk with rebelsKhartoum - Defence minister Mohammed Hus-sein has offered direct talks with rebels who oper-ate in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states. Hussein said his government is willing to discuss with the Southern People’s Liberation Movement - North (SPLM-N) rebels, provided dialogue is based on protocols set out in a 2005 peace agree-ment with South Sudan. “Dialogue must be based on the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and pro-tocol for the two areas as reference. Observers are preparing to monitor a demilitarised zone between Sudan and South Sudan, to curb cross-border rebel support,” said Hussein. SPLM-N negotiations team member Neroun Phil-lip said Khartoum’s offer is progressive, but dif-ficulties may come in the details of the talks. Sudan previously refused to meet the SPLM-N and accused South Sudan of backing it. Their bid to oust President Omar al-Bashir, began soon after the 2011 secession. The war has forced over 200 000 people to flee to South Sudan and Ethiopia.

Antananarivo - Independent National Election Commission of the Transition (CENIT) president Attallah Beatrice has announced that presidential elections will be held on May 8, 2013. Beatrice added that the second round of presiden-tial elections will be held with the legislatives on July 3, 2013, while the mayors of urban and rural municipalities will be elected simultaneously with municipal councillors on October 23 this year. The Independent National Election Commission of the Transition said these dates were decided after a workshop CENIT held with international electoral experts, who called on politicians and all political actors to respect electoral laws. CENIT will also meet with donors to present the budget and necessary resources for elections, calling on donors to lift all financial sanctions they took in 2009 because of the political crisis in the country. The island state has been involved in political crisis since December 2008; following a stalemate between former president Marc Ravalomanana and transitional president Andry Rajoelina, the mayor of Antananarivo from December 2007 to March 2009 who led a massive protest against Ravaloma-nana from 2002 to March 2009.

Coup boss suspends constitutionBangui - Rebel leader Mi-chel Djotodia has suspend-ed the constitution and dissolved parliament, after his Seleka rebels seized the capital and forced Presi-dent Francois Bozize into exile in Cameroon. Djotodia declared him-self president and pledged to keep a power-sharing government in place, in compliance with a January

peace deal. “I will legislate by decree, and the transi-tion will lead us to free elections,” he said. About 5 000 fighters swept into Bangui on Sun-day after the collapse of a power-sharing deal, and 13 SA soldiers died in clashes. SA soldiers were sent to support government troops after the December rebel offensive. AU chief Nko-

Bamako – The French government has confirmed that al-Qaeda-linked warlord Abou Zeid was killed in com-bat with French troops in Mali. French President Francois Hollande said Zeid’s death ‘marks an important step in the fight against terrorism in the Sahel’. Chad’s President Idriss Déby had said ear-lier that Chadian troops killed Abou Zeid in operations in the Adrar des Ifoghas mountains in northern Mali. French officials maintained that Abou Zeid was ‘prob-ably’ dead but waited to conduct DNA tests to verify. Abou Zeid was a pillar of the southern realm of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, responsible for the death of European hostages and a leader of the takeover of northern Mali. He had close ties to overall AQIM boss, Abdelmalek Droukdel. Abou Zeid fought trying to topple the Algerian state since 1992. He joined the Armed Islamic Group that massacred whole villages in northern Algeria, then joined the Salafist Group for Call and Combat that morphed into al-Qaeda in the Is-lamic Maghreb in 2006. Abou Zeid led one of the most violent brigades of AQIM and was believed to be holding four French na-tionals who were kidnapped two years ago in Niger.

Joburg’s Market Theatre is cur-rently hosting the South African

premiere of a production called Cadre, written and directed by actor and playwright Omphile Molusi. The play is inspired by true life events of an APLA soldier during the apartheid era; it also honours all the unsung heroes who died fighting

and hoping for a better future. The presentation started on 20 March and is on at the Market’s Laager Theatre up to 14 April. Molusi says the piece will help re-mind us of why we fought for free-dom, which will also help us avoid history repeating itself, through ex-ploring the journey of a young South African man struggling to navigate his way through the tumultuous po-

litical landscape of apartheid rule. “Soldering through the perils of a country consumed by war, he des-perately clings to the memory of his first love and the hope of a sweet re-union. When I tell political stories, people always connect with the per-sonal, which gets them to the poli-tics and they start getting the bigger picture. This play reminds people that the past cannot be hidden, no

matter how hard it has been. It teaches us to take care of the pres-ent, so that we don’t go back, and so we can have a better future in the world.” South African ac-tors make up the cast, with great talents such as Lillian Tshabalala, Omphile Molusi who himself plays the lead

role of Cadre, and Sello Motloung. Premiered at the Chicago Shake-speare Theatre in the United States as part of the World Stage Series following Molusi`s internation-ally acclaimed production Itsoseng, presented by the Chicago Shake-speare Theatre in 2010, Cadre has also been produced by the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, with Richard Jordan Productions Ltd, in associa-tion with the Market Theatre. An actor and playwright, Omphile Molusi has published several plays. They include The Sweet Door, Ijo! Pozeng, Itsoseng and For the Right Reasons. His performance credits in the UK and South Africa include It-soseng, Romeo and Juliet, The Mir-ror, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Much Ado about Nothing, Echoes, Blurring Shine, Julius Caesar, Love of Vultures, Angel in a Blue Dress, Kasiology and Sharpeville.

With a massive arsenal of observa-tional humour, cutting intellect and a guitar, Tats brings a flavour to stand up comedy that is unrivalled at the Joburg Theatre on 5 and 6 April. The winner of the Breakthrough Act of the Year at the 2012 South African Comics Choice Awards, Tats Nkonzo has managed to harness and also inte-grate comedy and music to exhilarat-ing effect. He made his Comedy Central debut when he hosted Comedy Central pres-ents Tats Nkonzo Live at Parkers in January 2012. This time he intends to let it all out in his solo performance. As a Top 24 finalist in the third sea-son of the M-Net reality competition, Idols (2005), and as a top eight final-ist in the SABC 1 reality competition So You Think You’re Funny! in 2008, Tats Nkonzo is known for his musical segments on the fourth and fifth sea-son of the eNews Channel’s satirical news show Late Nite News, which is

hosted by Loyiso Gola. Based on the content of Tats Nkonzo’s material on stage, CNN’s Afri-can Voices conducted a profile on him and Nik Rabinowitz, where the two had an opportunity to speak about South Africa and how stand-up comedy fits in the pic-ture of nation building. Also known as the host of the e.tv reality compe-tition, SA’s Got Talent, in 2012, Tats Nkonzo is an artist whose ability knows no bounds. Daily Dispatch writer Joe Parker referred to Nkonzo as one of the quickest transitions from amateur to professional comedian. Helen Herim-bi of Argus Tonight said: “One of the best acts to happen to SAcomedy.”

Orlando Pirates coach Roger De Sa has a plan as his team continues

to fight for PSL and CAF Champions League titles, having already lost the Nedbank Cup contest this season De Sa says the team will have to manage their upcoming games wise-ly, as games will be coming thick and fast for them in the next few weeks. “We are certain of a spot in the group stages of the CAF Champions League competition, regardless of the second leg outcome. A win over Zanaco would effectively put us in the group stages regardless of the outcome. We will have to manage our remain-ing matches smartly because we will be playing a lot of football in such a

short space of time,” De Sa said. The coach says he is aware that the Champions League matches are get-ting tougher. “We will have to learn fast how to juggle the domestic league and the Champions League. We will have to be a bit more creative in the way we ensure that our players are in peak condition for both competitions at all times. The players will need to be on their best at all times, but still cautious not to lose focus on the PSL title De Sa said. There is some good news for Orlan-do Pirates fans, with the return of de-fender Rooi Mahamutsa. He has start-ed his rehabilitation programme with the club’s physiotherapist, after miss-ing the better part of the 2012/2013 season through injury. Goal.com

Kaizer Chiefs will battle Bloem-fontein Celtic with in what has

been touted as the ‘match of the last eight’ round of the Nedbank Cup on 13 April in Bloemfontein. Celtic coach Clinton Larsen has declared that his team will elimi-nate Chiefs from the Nedbank Cup. “I’m happy that it is a home draw, that’s all we were asking for. We were asking for a home draw and we got it, regardless of the opposi-tion. It was always going be tough with any team because Platinum Stars, Mamelodi Sundowns and Su-perSport United all still in it so get-ting a home draw was the most im-portant thing for us. As for playing Kaizer Chiefs, I have to say nobody gave us a chance to beat Orlando Pirates in the Telkom Knockout but we did, so why not with Chiefs? Chiefs are currently the best team in

the league, but it’s been proven that even the best teams can be beaten, and that’s what we will do,” Larsen says. He adds that it will mean a great deal for him to win two cup com-petitions in one season, after their Telkom Knockout success in De-cember. “Very few teams have ever done that. SuperSport United, under Pitso Mosimane were a team that were getting consistent in terms of reaching cup finals and we would like to do that,” he adds. Meanwhile Kaizer Chiefs mid-fielder Willard Katsande says they are not fazed by the prospect of playing Celtic away twice in two weeks.Celtic will host Amakhosi on March 31 in a league encounter, and in the Nedbank Cup on 13 April. Katsande however admits that it will be a tough two weeks for his team, but he says he is confident that

they can cope with the pressure. “We are not going there to assess them in the first match; we are go-ing there to fight for three points and then focus on the Nedbank Cup match. It is going to be tough, but we are looking forward to the game. We want to win every match.” Chiefs are targeting the league and Nedbank Cup double, and Katsande insists nothing will stand in their way of achieving their dream. “We don’t want to put ourselves under pressure, we are taking it one game at a time and will see how far we can go. We really need this Cup and are going there to fight and progress to the next round.” In the other Nedbank Cup quarter final games Maritzburg United face Supersport United on the same day. On the next day Sundowns meet Platinum Stars in the other quarter final, while NFD sides United FC and African Warriors battle it out.
