With snow covering much of the ground during January, it's natural to want to get outside more often. We have many options for snow-filled adventure in the area.

Sledding and TubingOur family loves sledding! it’s relatively quick, easy, and inexpensive. We have a small hill near our house that makes it easy to send the kids out to sled. We leave the sleds on the front porch during the winter to keep them accessible. The kids will also just pull sleds around in the yard. We enjoy going to Bonneyville mill and Ox Bow County Park. each has a warming house that gives a heated place for a snack. Walnut Park in goshen is another option. Tubing is always fun as well.

Cross-Country SkiingCross-country skiing allows you to glide over the top of the snow instead of sinking down in as you move along a trail. groomed paths are offered at both Bonneyville mill and Ox Bow County Park.

Snow Shoeingafter last year’s snowfall, it’s time to start thinking about snowshoes, as they work best when there is at least 6-12” of snow. Try it on trails in the area with plenty of snow, being careful not to disturb the cross-country skiing trails.

Ice Skatingmy grandfather often talks about ice skating on the lake in his more nimble years. if you don’t have access to a safe lake, try nibco Water & ice Park in elkhart.

to say that 100% of the money that is raised from businesses and individuals in the community goes directly to help offset college costs for graduating students right here in our community.”

So writes Sandra Weatherwax, better known as “Sandy” to her friends, which seem to be about

everyone. That’s because you can’t help but be drawn to her contagious joy, her effervescent personality, and her warm, welcoming demeanor. Even the animals are drawn to her.

Sandy’s joy has not come from having an easy life. Quite the opposite, actually. Like a diamond being formed under great pressure and intense heat, Middlebury’s resident, author of the book “Dancing in the Wind,” and co-founder of LoveWay, Inc., shares in her memoir of how life’s tragedies pale in comparison to “the love of God and his promises.”

Her storyFirst, her husband Gary would become a paraplegic; then, Laurie, their daughter, would die at the young age of 17.

While in the midst of their grieving, Gary and Sandy started a therapeutic horse riding school for the handicapped in Laurie’s memory, as that’s what Laurie had wanted to do. They named the center

“LoveWay,” in part because the word contains Laurie’s initials: LW.

And, with the beginning of LoveWay, healing began for Sandy and Gary. Sandy’s book chronicles their journey fraught with struggles yet equally filled with hilarity. Sandy calls it “a wild and crazy ride!”

Today“LoveWay saved my life,” says Sandy, sitting on a bench and motioning around the barn. “And yet, every time I come here, I wish I had Laurie by my side,” she says wistfully. Then, Sandy’s face illuminates at the sight of Little Goliath, a Shetland pony who nuzzles up to her and eventually tries to chew the flowers off her sandals. Sandy laughs riotously, like a child who has abandoned herself to life’s simple joys.

Sandy’s life and book remind us that the winds that bite and sting are oftentimes the same winds that fan a beautiful flame so we can dance.

Terry rheinheimer HonoredDuring the Indiana Library Federation’s (ILF) annual awards dinner in Indianapolis on November 18, Terry Rheinheimer, Director of the Middlebury Community Public Library, received the Federation’s leadership award for her 12 years of service as American Library Association (ALA) Councilor and for being an untiring champion for libraries. As ALA Councilor, Rheinheimer represented Indiana on the ALA Council which is ALA’s governing body. She also served on the ILF Board of Directors and on their Legislative Committee. Terry has been the library's director since 1979.

What better way to warm you up during the heart of winter than to let you know about the Garden Club at the Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury?

The Crazy Daisies Junior garden Club is one of the longest running programs here. each fall for the

past ten years, members in grades 3 – 5 have been invited to sign

up to participate in garden Club during the school year. monthly meetings explore topics beyond how to grow vegetables and plant pretty flowers (although it is thanks to the middlebury garden

Club that, each spring, tulips and daisies abound on the Boys

& girls Club property!) members learn to be good stewards of the earth; they make

crafts, learn about wildlife, and much more. One of the highlights of the 2014 Club was when a guest speaker from the Parks Department came to teach about turtles, snakes, and other animals. The speaker even brought some four-legged guests for the kids to see!

Poster Contesteach year, garden Club members are also encouraged to participate in the Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl poster contest. many can remember commercials featuring Smokey Bear reminding everyone, “Only you can prevent forest fires.” it is upon this theme that the members

are asked to create a poster highlighting the need for everyone to be conscious of how their actions affect the natural environment around them. Over the past several years, a handful of middlebury Crazy Daisies have won awards at the state level for their posters.

National Poetry ContestThrough the middlebury garden Club, all Boys & girls Club members are also invited to participate in a national poetry contest. a recent theme was Protecting and Conserving our natural Resources. Julia m., a 7th grade student at northridge middle School at the time, submitted her poem “Right Now” and was recognized as a regional winner for her work.

In the fall of 1971, Northridge High School fielded its first varsity football team. In the 40+ years that followed, Raider football teams enjoyed the support of the Middlebury community despite the limited number of victories. Entering the fall of 2014, Northridge had won 151 games against 288 losses for a .343 winning percentage.

Something changed in 2014. Northridge football, the one-time doormat of the Northern Lakes Conference, was a Friday night force which seemingly meted out upon their opponents the torture of 40 woe-filled years of football struggle. In turn, they were embraced by a community longing to believe in what this team could do.

The Raiders began the season with three impressive wins, followed by two straight losses, and then finished off the regular season with four more wins for a 7-2 regular season. In the playoffs, they reeled off another four straight wins to win first ever sectional and regional titles for Northridge. The season ended with the stands filled with fans on a bitterly cold night as Northridge lost a hard-fought game against a very tough New Prairie team. It was a fall to remember. Here are Coach Wogomon’s words as he remembers the highlights of this season.

NHS Students Participate in Distance Learning Conversationsmr. Bowen’s Psychology class recently participated in a distance learning activity where students had the chance to interact with a safe house operator from Sierra Leone. The woman, a director of a slave trade safe house from the Freetown area of the african country, gave students insight into the inhumane slave trades that are impacting the region as well as an understanding of how her safe house is rescuing people and providing them with rehabilitation and mental health services. Twenty-six students participated in the activity in the northridge High School FiC room, which is specifically set up for such distance learning opportunities.

Owl Pellet Dissection and Investigationevery fall, while learning about ecosystems, food chains, and biomes in mrs. Brook Friesner’s fifth grade class, the students get to participate in a lab where they have the opportunity to dissect an owl pellet.

an owl pellet is an amazing tiny ecosystem that contains materials that owls are not able to digest such as bones, fur, teeth, and feathers. about twenty hours after eating, an owl will regurgitate a pellet.

after spending several days to prepare for the dissection, students work in pairs to take apart their pellets. This must be done very carefully so that no bones break. after the pellet has been disassembled, the partners examine and sort all of the bones and try to identify what type of animal they came from using identification charts. Then, the bones are charted.

Some of the most common bones found come from rats, mice, voles, and birds. Students become very excited to see how many nearly complete skeletons they are able to find. One of the most exciting finds this year was made by a group that discovered what appeared to be vertebrae from a rodent that was all hooked together with a furry tail still attached. Students also find it interesting to compare their findings to the bones of a human skeleton and to other animal bones on display in the room. Having a chance to participate in an experience like this helps to really bring the food chain to life for these fifth grade students.

Kindergarten Enrollment

Starting in January, we will be accepting the names of kindergarten students for the 2015-2016 school year. Please call the school office at 822.5399 to register your child. Kindergarten round-up will be on Tuesday, april 28, 2015. incoming kindergarteners must be five years old by September 1, 2015.

Stability Balls at Orchard Viewat Orchard View elementary, mrs. Bickel’s 2nd grade students were on a mission to persuade mrs. Clark, the principal, that stability balls were a necessity for student learning! each student wrote a persuasive letter to her, along with a short presentation. mrs. Bickel’s students researched and learned that there are many benefits of using stability balls daily in the classroom.

Some of the points they included in their persuasive letters were:

• Stabilityballscreatestrongercoremuscles to promote better focus;

• Movingcreatesbetterbloodflowand

oxygen to the brain which produces better memory;

• Studentshavefewerbehavioralproblems because they are able to “get their wiggles out”;

• Studentswillbehappy!

The points in their letters were so convincing that mrs. Clark was persuaded. The class was able to replace all their regular classroom desk chairs with stability balls. They have been in use for a little over a month and, so far, spelling test scores have improved and students are better at math facts! The students knew all along this was going to be a good thing!

PTO Auction and Carnival The annual PTO auction and Carnival is February 7th at 9 am! The event is the highlight of the year. The PTO works for months preparing, collecting donations, and planning games for the day. There is something for everyone. Children can play games at the carnival in the cafeteria while parents bid on items in

both a live and silent auction. Donated items include an Orthodontics Package by Dr. Long, tickets to Disney World, an iPad mini, and a Brighton purse. There are classroom projects available and a bake sale, too. There will be food such as Rulli’s pizza, Ben’s Pretzels, Kukui’s Shaved ice, and cotton candy.

The event raises money which is put to good use: the PTO has purchased books and materials for students and classrooms, safety supplies for the school, equipment for the playground, and more. if you would like to donate something to our auction, please call Lori Tabor at 825.5955.

Carnival & AuctionOn Saturday, January 31, 2015, the middlebury elementary PTO will be having its auction/carnival. This is the school’s major fundraiser for the year and all of the proceeds go back to help the students of meS. There will be carnival games for the children, a food court with cotton candy and other foods, and a silent and live auction in the gymnasium. The carnival runs from 10 am-12:30 pm with the live auction beginning at 12:30 pm. auction items include a full braces package from Dr. Shawn Long (valued at over $5,000), classroom baskets, a certificate to Becky’s Boot Camp, wood mulch from Fiber By-Products, an H & H doll, classroom projects made by students, a ukulele from mainland Ukes, a cornhole game, and Principal-for-a-Day, with many more things being added weekly!

Veterans DayThe week of Veterans Day, members of our local american Legion spent time with our third graders. Mr. Doeden, Mr. Cook, Mr. Weaver, and Mr. rathka presented a program on the history of our american flag. They also shared with the students the symbolism of a table set aside at the american Legion Post for all service members listed as POW or MIa. We are so thankful for their service to our country and for visiting our school.
