You can select from the following inlet configurations which are available according to the selected culvertshape. The following inlet conditions are available (see drawing), but may not apply to all shapes or materials:
ProjectingGrooved end with headwall (0.05 X 0.07D)Grooved end projecting (0.05 X 0.07D)Square edge with headwallBeveledMitered to conform with fill slopeHeadwall
The user can select only one inlet condition for each culvert. Detailed explanations of these inlet conditions canbe found in FHWA Publication HDS No. 5 (2001) bundled with the program.
This configurationresults in the end ofthe culvert barrelprojecting out ofthe embankment.
The grooved pipe isfor concreteculverts anddecreases the lossthrough the culvertentrance.

This option is forconcrete pipeculverts.
Square edge withheadwall is anentrance conditionwhere the culvertentrance is flushwith the headwall.
'Beveled edges' is atapered inlet edgethat decreases headloss as flow entersthe culvert barrel.
A mitered entranceis when the culvertbarrel is cut so it isflush with theembankment slope.
Wingwalls are usedwhen the culvert isshorter than theembankment andpreventsembankmentmaterial fromfalling into theculvert

NOTE: HDS-5 notes that "Flared end sections made of either metal or concrete, are the sectionscommonly available from manufacturers. From limited hydraulic tests they are equivalent in operation toa headwall in both inlet and outlet control. Some end sections, incorporating a closed taper in their designhave a superior hydraulic performance. These latter sections can be designed using the information givenfor the beveled inlet"
