Principal’s Report Dear Parents and Carers, Student Led Conferences

A reminder that next Tuesday is a curriculum day for our Student Led Conferences. Students are only required to attend school when their conference is on. Out of School Hours Care through Camp Australia will be available during the day. Please contact Camp Australia for information about this.

What is a Student Led Conference? A Student Led Conference, as the name implies is a conference led by the student. Every student from Grade Prep to Grade 6 has spent time preparing a portfolio of work to be shared with you. They will discuss their semesters’ achievements and their future learning goals. It is a very special time for each student. Students must wear their school uniform for their conference. When booking times for more than one child, it is important that you leave a 15 minute break between meetings to allow you to get from one room to the next. All conferences should start and end on time. If you would like to schedule another meeting with your child’s teacher please do this prior to the end of the conference or at another time.

For students to present their work more than once can be quite taxing for them. Where possible, we ask that families co-ordinate diaries so that all parents and carers who intend to come to the student led conference do so at the same time. I hope that you enjoy this special time with your child. Student Reports All student outcomes will be assessed against the new Victorian Curriculum for the first time, this semester. For families with children in Grade 1 to Grade 6 a letter will be included in your child’s report explain the changes. Student reports will be distributed on Friday, June 23, and will be followed up with Student Led Conferences on Monday evening, June 26 and all day Tuesday, June 27. Reading News - Scholastic Literacy Pro

As you would now be aware, we have been refocussing on reading across the school. The presentation of our first lot of ‘100 club’ award winners happened on Monday morning at assembly. Congratulations to all students. Another strategy that we are

implementing from Grade 3 to Grade 6 is Scholastic Literacy Pro. Literacy Pro supports the tracking and assessment of students’ reading when their reading levels are above a certain ‘outcome’. Literacy Pro also supports students to access just right books within their interest base

for nightly home reading. As always, the strength in this program is in the support that students receive from both home and school. Therefore, it continues to be our expectation that every child reads, every night. For most families of children in Grade 3 to Grade 6, you will receive a letter from us in the next week or so outlining your child’s Lexile score and some information about the program. If you have any questions about this, please see your child’s teacher.

CUA Fun Run Congratulations to all the students who participated in the CUA Fun Run on Tuesday.

The whole school enjoyed a fun Zumba warm up with iDance studio instructors Andrew and Tarni before completing their fun run and ending with an icy pole in the amphitheatre. Thank you Andrew and Tarni. Thank you also to Anna Tular, teachers and parents for making the event a success.

Annual School Production This year our School Production, ‘Porridge’ will be held at the Capital Theatre on Thursday, September 21. We are very excited to be using this venue; it will provide our students with an authentic theatre experience. The Capital Theatre will be managing all ticketing for the show and therefore tickets will be available from the box office from Monday, August 21.

Prep 2018 - Enrolment All parents who are intending to enrol their child in Prep at Kennington Primary School for next year, 2018, should collect an Enrolment Pack from the school office. The pack includes information related to KPS including the Great Start Transition Program and includes the official school enrolment form. Could all enrolment forms and a copy of the child’s birth certificate and immunisation record please be returned to school by Friday June 30, 2017. This date is set by the Department of Education. If your child has additional needs, including a medical diagnosis, language difficulties, is involved with any Early Intervention services, or if you just have a worry or concern about your child, please make an appointment to see me as soon as possible. If your child is hearing impaired please contact Ms Marg Tope, the leader of the Deaf Facility through the school office.

The Facebook and Twitter pages will enhance communication with our parents and local community and support promotion of our school in the wider community. The school will use Facebook and Twitter to share posts on current events and activities as well as the school newsletter each week. The Link The Link is the main form of communication with you so please ensure that your child brings it home. The Link is sent home with the youngest child in each family or can be accessed at www.kennington.vic.edu.au and loaded up to Facebook. The Link is published on Thursdays. Grade 2 News On Tuesday, June 13, the Grade 2 students participated in an Aboriginal Incursion. Bettina Bysouth, DET Koorie Education Support Officer and Simon Penrose spoke about Aboriginal culture and the importance of connections to the land. Bettina talked about the many different languages Aboriginal people speak all around Australia and showed a number of symbols used on maps and paintings that tell a story. Simon showed various artefacts that had significance to Aboriginal people, including a boomerang, shield, woomera and didgeridoo. The students also had an opportunity to touch and try on, a traditional possum skin coat. It was a fantastic experience for the students to gain a greater understanding of Aboriginal culture and their connections to the land.

The program will be co-ordinated and run by male and

female accredited personnel (WWCC) and we encourage

both boys and girls to be involved in the program. The

program will run regardless of the weather conditions (with

modified activities).
