OTHER ADVERTS IN THIS GENRE

When looking at advertisements, we all found they were quite similar. Some had more text than others and other advertisements had more visuals. A key thing that we found consistently in all these advertisements was that it was usually linked to the album cover or was a picture of the album cover. This immediately addressed that we were going to use the album artwork to represent the advertisement also. This was as it meant they would interlink and the audience would know what digipak we’re advertising to them.

KEY FEATURES WE WILL INCLUDE: PLANNINGAfter looking at a range of different advertisements as a group we identified

some key features within an advertisement. Our first thought was using the album cover on the advertisement. We will reuse the background image from the front cover, we then decided we would add logos to our advertisement. The first logo will be the bands name. This is used throughout The Killers albums and advertisements so the audience will connect with it easily as they have seen it before. A typical convention in all advertisements also is using the logos of the music industries. As The Killers are licensed under Island records which is a subsidiary of the universal music group we placed both of these music companies logos. This allows the audience to know who publishes their music. Underneath the band’s logo we will use the album name. This will be placed in the same font that is on the album so that the audience understand that the digipak and advert are connected. This will also let the audience to know what the advertisement is talking about. We will then include text (in the same font as the album name to match the house style). This text will help intrigue the audience in and is common in advertisements. This will include a plug talking about the single ‘for reasons unknown’ this has been done as we want to connect the print production to our video and by doing this it will intrigue audience members who have watched and enjoyed the music video to buy the digipak. Their will be other conventions on the advertisement. This will include the date of when the album will be released and ways to interact the band on media platforms. This will include the social media of Facebook and twitter. For twitter we decided just to use ‘@thekillers’ because from research we learnt that our audience is very active on social media understanding what this reference means. A website will also be included and this will allow the audience to interact and learn more about the promotional packages that we’re releasing.

DESIGN OF ADVERT: PLANNING

For the advertisement we decided to design it in a simple manner. We did this because from audience research it was found that the audience like more visually pleasing advertisements rather than heavy text based advertisements. This effected what type o advertisement we made and by doing so we have left it quite basic meaning the audience will understand what it is telling them and as it is quite quick to read they will probably read the whole of the advertisement rather than just parts of it. The way the audience will read the text will be in a downwards motion. This is as we want the highlight of the advertisement to be the band name and the date. By doing this it will be the focal attention for the audience and those fans of The Killers will immediately be attracted and read the advertisement as they know what logo this band is from. The whole advertisement will have a background image, this is simple yet effective and as they know what this image is from so they can connect with it. The text on the advertisement will use two plugs with conventional text in between. This conventional text (the date) will be placed in a slightly bigger font; this is as we want this to capture the audiences attention the most so they know when they can get the album. Near the bottom of the advertisement a line will be placed. Underneath this line will be conventional text which is placed on all advertisements. This has been done to show that this information is slightly different and some of the information like the music industries logos is not relevant to them.

TEXTUAL ANALYSIS:ADVERTISEMENT

BAND LOGO:This will be the biggest text on the advert. This is to draw in the audiences attention. This logo has been used as this is what is used to represent the band name on all their previous adverts and albums. This isa common convention for the band and the audience will understand this and connect with the advert.

ALBUM NAME:Underneath the band logo will be the album name. These are both placed in the exact same position on the digipak. This is done to reference that this advertisement is linked to that album. The text is placed allot smaller than the band logo. This is as we want the audience to notice who it is by rather than the album. By placing this in completely different text to the band logo it is visually pleasing to the audience as they’re looking at different things.

Date:This text is placed quite large. This is done because we want the focal of the album to be on when the album is released. By placing this date we can get a hype about the album release from the audience making more people aware of the digipak.

Plug:To intrigue the audience a plug about the music video is used. We did this as we wanted to connect the print production and video production together. By doing so fans that have seen the video and enjoyed it will immediately want to buy the digipak. We also used the words ‘brand new album’ as this is quite common on an advertisement.

Music industry logos:In the bottom corners we placed two logos. We included two logos as The Killers are a

part of island records however, they’re a subsidiary of the universal music group

which publishes all their music. By placing both of these companies it allows for the

audience to directly know who helps make their music

and is placed because it is a common convention that

is seen on music advertisements.

SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS:The last part of the text that we see are links to various media platforms including: a website, Facebook and twitter. These are now conventions in modern advertisements as everything is online. From the audience research we found that the audience are likely to watch things via. Their phone, or an application like YouTube. This means it is likely the audience have social media accounts and by knowing that they can follow the bands updates on the digipak and music video this connects them directly with band. For twitter we only used the ‘@’ symbol. This was done as we feel the audience will clearly understand what social media we’re linking it to. By placing these the audience can really feel connected and learn about more information from the band.

BACKGROUND IMAGE:For the background image the same image that is on the digipak is used. This links it together as they share the same album artwork. The image can be clearly seen and there is a space in between the conventional text and logos at the top. By using this break our eyes are drawn to the image which adds a certain feeling to the audience. By placing this as the darkest thing on the advertisement (because everything else is placed in white font) it gives a nice contrast and shows how dark and more so emotional this digipak will be. This will be really significant to newer fans of the alternative/indie rock genre as darker colours appeal to them.
