INITIAL WALKTHROUGH

INITIAL INITIAL INITIAL WALKTHROUGH

Meeting the LocalsYou will be taken to the Sundae Inn while you recover from the trip. Here you are introduced to the owners, Jake and Colleen. You are then told to meet the Mayor outside the Inn. After giving you a brief overview of the village and a Map to the Island, he asks you to introduce yourself to everyone in the area.

The Sundae Inn is centrally located in Waffl e Town. The Mayor’s request will allow you to explore the main Shops in this area. The central street in Waffl e Town runs left and right from the Sundae Inn, and there are two streets that intersect it if you wa k toward the Pier at the right. Both of these run west toward the ocean from the Main Street. The fi rst of these is a residential street with a small square, the Mayor’s House and Yolanda’s House. The second of these is a street with three Shops.

Walking toward the Beach from the Main Street along the second street, you fi nd the General Store and west of that, the Meringue Clinic. The third shop is unoccupied at the start of the game, but ultimately will become the site of the Tailor Shop.

If you stay on the Main Street, but continue to wa k to the right, you come to a wide stairway that leads east to the Town Square. This is where you’ll fi nd the Town Hall.

If you ignore the stairway and continue right from the Sundae Inn, you’ll eventually arrive at the Pier. To the left of the Pier is the Fish Shop, On The Hook.

You need to explore all of these Shops and Businesses now. You can do this in any order, but we’ll specify the most straightforward order here for your convenience (see our numbered descriptions).

Whenever you encounter a new character or enter a new Shop or Business, you experience a little Event. Here’s who you’ll meet during your fi rst exploration of Waffl e Town:

1. Simon and Barbara

2. Jin and Irene

3. Gill

4. Elli and Kathy

5. Ozzie

6. Pascal and White Cat

Enter the General Store to meet Simon and his wife, Barbara. Barbara will give you the Island Guide, Volume 1, your fi rst Book. This is a guidebook to Waffl e Island, with brief descriptions of both Mines on the island and Wild Animals.

Enter the Meringue Clinic to meet Irene and, when you exit, Doctor Jin. Jin is one of the elig ble bachelors if your character is a girl.

Wa k up the stairway to the Waffl e Town Square to meet Gill, the Mayor’s son. Gill is an elig ble bachelor if your character is a girl.

Enter the Town Hall to meet Elli and Kathy. Kathy is one of the eligible bachelorettes if your character is a boy, but it is Elli who works at the Town Hall. You will not meet Kathy again until you have unlocked the Brownie Ranch area.

Enter On The Hook to meet Ozzie, the proprietor. You will fi nd Pascal, the captain of your ship here most of the time in the future. Ozzie will give you another book, Beginning Fishing.

Finally, visit the Pier outside On The Hook to meet your fi rst animal, a White cat. You will fi nd Pascal at the Pier, as well. Although you will have met Pascal previously on the ship, this is your fi rst proper introduction. He will tell you that he is not able to sail from the Island at this point. The seas are far too rough. In fact, this is a hint about the need to fi nd the Harvest Sprite whose Rainbow Bridge will allow Ferry Service to resume.

Meeting Wild Animals

The White Cat is only the fi rst of many Wild Animals you will encounter as you continue to explore the Island. Wild Animals are found on all the Islands and, once met, will appear in the Animals page of your Friends menu. These menus are covered in detail later in this guide.

A Wild Animal can become a Pet when you reach six Hearts with it. You need to feed Wild Animals Items that they l ke in order to raise their Heart levels. Once it reaches six Hearts, you will have the option to name it and invite it to live with you as a Pet.

Your First Save File

Meet Craig and Ruth

Enter Souffl e Farm to meet Craig and his wife, Ruth. Ruth will tell you that you can help her husband in the fi eld. For the next few days, you will be instructed in various aspects of farming.

Craig fi rst teaches you the art of weeding a fi eld. This is a time-based event—even if you pull every weed in the time allotted, Craig will tell you that you “barely passed” the test. Not to worry. The point of this is to obtain a Watering Can, your fi rst tool.

After pulling all of the weeds in the fi eld, you have an opportunity to water all the crops. After completing the task, you can speak once to the Mayor and then return to Souffl e Farm. Upon entering, you meet the daughter, Anissa. She is one of the eligible bachelorettes if your character is a boy.

Meet Craig and RuthMeet Craig and RuthMeet Craig and Ruth

Beginner’s Farming Tutorial

Initial Save Strategies

Anissa will give you a book: Farming for Beginners. Speaking to Ruth brings your day to an end and gives you another opportunity to save your game.

Craig’s Strawberries

Periodically, your character will experience dreams in which he/she encounters the Harvest Goddess. Your primary task is to restore the Island to its former state by replanting the Mother Tree, and the Harvest Goddess, as guardian of the Island, is desperate to persuade you. Since the death of the Mother Tree, she has been helpless, and the only way she can contact you is through dreams.

During your stay at Souffl e Farm, you have your fi rst encounter with the Harvest Goddess in a dream. Her words are disjointed, but you’ll get the gist of her message: she needs your help!

On the 4th, the Mayor returns to see what progress you have made. You will have the opportunity to speak of your dream when he asks what is bothering you.

Your choices:

I dreamed about a beautiful lady…

I dreamed about a lady with long hair…

I dreamed about a lady with wings…

In a Dream

After reporting to Ruth, she sends you to bed, where you will have your second dream about the Harvest Goddess.

The next day will be spent harvesting the Strawberries you planted. Strawberries are the most valuable Spring Crop, but the Seeds are the most expensive. Your task will be a timed event. Once all Strawberries have been harvested, you must take them to the ‘neighbors’ as gifts. This is another timed event, and one that gives you a chance to explore the Maple Lake region a little. There are three Strawberry gifts, special Items named Craig’s Strawberries. You need to give them to Yolanda, Jin, and Gill. Yolanda is standing next to Toby’s house. Gill is standing beside the church, and Jin is at the top of a little stairway that leads up a hill near the church. If you give one to Anissa, who is standing near the Lake, her affection level will increase, but the gift will not ‘count’ toward your job, as she is not a neighbor! You earn less pay if you don’t give all three Strawberries to the neighbors as directed.

When you speak to the Mayor, he advises you to return to the Inn. You will have an opportunity to save your game. There are three Save slots. Choose any of these to save your game at this point. When you regain control, it will be the next day, Spring 2nd at 10:00 a.m.

Go outside to speak to the Mayor and he will ask you if he introduced himself to you. Tell him that his name is Hamilton to increase your friendship level a little. From time to time in the game, you will be asked a question l ke this. In most cases, all answers are equal but are framed in different ways. On other occasions, there is a correct response and an incorrect one.

Now he will take you outside Waffl e Town to show you the Church and other locations in the Maple Lake District, a ‘big housing district’ planned for the future. The Maple Lake District is where most new arrivals will build their homes once Ferry Service resumes.

Whenever you enter a new area, you will be given a visual overview of this area. After showing you the Maple Lake District, the Mayor will lead you northwest to the Ganache Mine District.

Souffl e Farm is situated on the outskirts of the Ganache Mine District at its western end. It is here that you will be able to purchase Seeds, Saplings and Crops once you have your own farm. Before he leaves, the Mayor announces that you will stay at Souffl e Farm while your new house is being built.

You have three save slots. You can use all three to save the same game at different points or play three different games. The only time you will be able to save your game once you have your own house is when you stand in front of your Diary at your bedside table. At this point in the game, you may wish to save your game each day in a different fi le. Any of these can be overwritten in the future, but if you have problems with any of the Farm Tutorials, you can always reload your game at an earlier point to replay it.

INITIAL WALKTHROUGH

Getting Paid to Learn

For the fi rst few days while the construction of your house proceeds, your stay at Souffl e Farm is the means by which basic Farming Tutorials can be given. At the end of this period, the Mayor will announce the completion of your home. You will then be paid a small sum for the work you’ve done for Craig and Ruth during your stay with them.

You now have an opportunity to choose the location of your fi rst home.

You may wish to choose the third option as the most specifi c, but as previously explained, questions l ke these are asked throughout the game and often the response you choose is irrelevant. The Mayor will ponder for a moment, but then move on to a more pressing issue, the completion of your house.

Choosing Your Land

An event such as this deserves an offi cial announcement from the Mayor:

Seaside Plot

Town Plot

Hilltop Plot

Location of Your First House

Tree of Tranquility is similar to Magical Melody in giving the player the option initially to choose the location of his/her First House from a number of different Plots. Each of the locations has advantages and disadvantages. Your choice will affect your entire life on the island to some extent as the location of your First House is the land on which your Coop and Animal Barn must be built. Furthermore, it is the only House that your spouse will recognize as home.

All three Plots are located in the Caramel River District, east of Maple Lake District and southeast of the Ganache Mine District. Each contains a Field for planting Crops or creating an Orchard, but the size of each Field varies slightly. Each also contains space for a potential Pasture and if you wish to build a Coop or Animal Barn, and all have suffi cient space to accommodate those buildings.

You will have opportunities in the future to purchase the Plots you did not choose initially, however, as well as another larger plot located in the southeast corner of the Caramel River District.

For this reason, you should consider initial goals rather than your ultimate lifestyle when choosing the location of your First House.

Advantages of the Town Plot

For convenience, the Town Plot may be the best, as it is located at the western end of the Caramel Falls District, beside the entrance to Waffl e Town, where many of the shops and businesses are situated. It may be the closest of the three to Waffl e Town, but it’s not as close to the Ganache Mine District as the Hilltop Plot.

The Field on the Town Plot is L-shaped and contains 92 squares. The Field essentially embraces the Shipping Container and the Faucet where your Watering Can is fi lled.

Access to Fishing

There is no direct access to any Fishing spot from the Town Plot. If you walk east, however, you will fi nd the Caramel River; and by walking south, you will reach the Beach.

Access to Mining

There is no direct access to any Mine from the Town Plot. At the start of the game, you will be obliged to go west into Waffl e Town, then north to the Maple Lake District and north again to reach the Ganache Mine District. This is where the Ganache Mine is located.

Instant access to the Waffl e Town District is the greatest advantage this location offers.

Advantages of the Hilltop Plot

An event such as this deserves an offi cial announcement from the Mayor:

Mayor: Your house is completed! AND

it’s rent free! It’s even FURNISHED!

Plus, we’re having a MEGA RED TAG

SALE! You can choose one of THREE

different places to live:

There is a compelling reason to choose the Hilltop Plot. It is the closest location to a natural Hot Spring at Caramel Falls. A visit to the Hot Spring will restore all Stamina, but it can be utilized only once each day and you must stay in the Spa for an hour. The Caramel Falls District borders the Hilltop Plot in the East, but it still takes almost an hour to reach the location of the Hot Spring by foot.

From any other Plot, the journey will be even longer. If you intend to use the Hot Spring regularly, you need to budget at least two hours for the entire experience. From the Town Plot or Seaside Plot, an additional half an hour must be factored into the equation. Early in the game, when you do not have the Kitchen Utensils that are necessary if you wish to cook or suffi cient income to purchase Cooked Dishes from the Sundae Inn, the Hot Spring is a vital resource for Stamina Recovery. This may be reason enough to choose the Hilltop Plot as the location of your First House.

The Field on the Hilltop Plot is the most regular in shape, consisting of 100 squares in a 10x10 formation. The location of the Shipping Container and Water Faucet is on the western edge of the Field, making it a little less convenient than an L-shaped Field.

8

Access to Mining

A path that runs past the western border of the Hilltop Plot leads directly to the Ganache Mine District, but it is blocked by an enormous Tree Root at the start of the game. Once the Root has been destroyed, you will have easy access to the Ganache Mine District, where most of the Shops and Businesses that are not in Waffl e Town itself are located. The Hilltop Plot, therefore, is less inconvenient in terms of Shopping than one might think at fi rst glance.

Access to Fishing

The eastern border of the Hilltop Plot is the Caramel River. You can walk quickly from there to the Caramel Falls District, where you’ll fi nd a waterfall and pool containing many Fish. Of all three choices, the Hilltop Plot is farthest from any Beach, but wa king south will take you ultimately to the Beach at the southern end of the Caramel River District. The closest Bonfi re is to be found there.

Advantages of the Seaside Plot

Mountain Plot

Although this Plot is not available at the start of the game, it is the fourth one you can own and is worth a quick mention here as it is the land to the east of the Seaside Plot. It’s the largest of all Plots, with a fi eld of 226 squares. This number is not divisible by six, but it does allow you to plant 36 full bags of Seeds and two-thirds of another bag.

Northeast of the Mountain Plot is a large boulder that blocks an Entrance to the Mt. Gelato District. The boulder cannot be smashed from the Caramel River side of the map, however. Once you have gained access to Mt. Gelato by completing Ben’s Rainbow Recipe and recovering his Badge from the Gull Island Beach, you can smash the boulder from the Mt. Gelato side, creating a shortcut between the Caramel River District and Mt. Gelato. It is only at this point in the game that it may be useful to purchase the Mountain Plot.

Stamina as a Consideration

Unfortunately, you do not have suffi cient Stamina to till and plant crops to fi ll even the smallest Field easily in the fi rst Spring. It will be a struggle to grow Crops in every square, both fi nancially and in terms of Stamina. The difference between the three Fields on the Plots you can choose, therefore, is rather insignifi cant in practical terms. Proximity to the Hot Spring may be the most important consideration at this stage in the game.

Characters will counsel you frequently not to be too ambitious at the start. You need to move slowly, and you cannot afford to become obsessed with any single goal. When you concentrate on only one aspect of the game, you lose sight of others, and this can cost you dearly. Your Stamina level turns red when it’s dangerously low. A full Stamina Bar displays all the colors of the Rainbow.

You do need to focus on your Stamina at all times, however. If your Stamina bar becomes fully depleted, you will pass out and fi nd yourself at the Clinic. You can actually lose an entire day if this happens, depending on the time of day or night when it disaster occurs.

Carry Items in your Rucksack that will restore Stamina in an emergency. Cooked Dishes restore Stamina better than raw ingredients, but you will not be able to afford them or make them in your Kitchen at the start of the game. That’s where the Hot Spring can make the difference between success and failure. If you plan your day effi ciently, you can perform as many Farming tasks as possible before your Stamina Bar reaches a dangerously low level, then visit the Hot Spring for complete Recovery. Return to your Field once your Stamina Bar has been refi lled to complete your Farming Tasks for the day.

Once you have suffi cient income to purchase a Kitchen Utensil, you can make a few basic Cooked Dishes to restore Stamina. See the Cooking section of this guide for tips on how to make easy Cooked Dishes that require the fewest ingredients. Until then, however, your best resource will be the Hot Spring.

“Now you have your own land for growing crops! You can even keep animals! Lots of them! And now you’re free to walk anywhere, anytime you want!

Maybe you’ll even fi nd the love of your life somewhere out there!”

The location of the Seaside Plot is picturesque and charming, on a small peninsula with water on either side at its southern tip. In fact, the Seaside Plot is where the Caramel River meets the Sea and so it’s advertised as the best location for Fishing.

The Beach on the border of the Seaside Plot does not have a Bonfi re, however. You must walk north to the Bridge, go west, then wa k south to fi nd the closest Beach with a Bonfi re.

The River is practically at your doorstep, and you can Fish from your land without being obliged to travel in any direction. There is a Beach on the southern border of your land, even if you cannot cook there, so you can still catch many varieties of both Freshwater and Saltwater Fish from the convenience of your Home.

The Seaside Plot comprises two different levels, contributing to its picturesque atmosphere. Although it may appear smaller than the other two Plots, its L-shaped Field actually contains 120 squares—the largest of the Fields available at the start of the game. The Shipping Container and Water Faucet are in the ‘inner e bow’ of the L, making them easily accessible from any part of the Field. Also, 120 is divis ble by 6—the number of seeds in any Seed bag.

The Seaside Plot is probably the least convenient in terms of Shopping, however, as it does not border another District on any side. You will pass either the Town Plot in the West to enter the Waffl e Town District or the Hilltop Plot in the Northwest to enter the Maple Lake District. When the shortcut to the Ganache Mine District is unblocked, you can wa k past the Hilltop Plot to reach it.

Nonetheless, it is a very pretty Plot and has the largest amount of tillable soil of the three Plots offered to your character initially. A Turtle, one of the Wild Animals on the Islands, actually will wander onto your land from time to time, adding to the charm of this location.

Access to FishingYou will have access to both the Ocean and River from your Home.

Access to MiningThere is no direct or easy access to any Mine from the Seaside Plot. You must travel past the Town Plot and/or Hilltop Plot on your way to the Ganache Mine District to reach the fi rst accessible Mine in the game. Of the three Plots, it is the closest to Mt. Gelato, where the second Mine is located, but Mt. Gelato will not be unlocked until you have completed three Rainbow Recipes. Once Mt. Gelato is access ble, you can smash a boulder that separates it from the Caramel River District. Even when you have access to Mt. Gelato, though, you must still climb the steep, winding Mountain Trail to reach the Mine there.

Pot RecipesAny Herb thrown into a Pot makes Herbal Tea, a simple drink that restores 80 points of Stamina Recovery. Herbal Tea is a very popular gift, and is one of the Most Favored Gifts for Anissa, Candace, and Jin, and is well-received by many other eligible bachelorettes, bachelors, and islanders. You can buy Herbal Tea at the Meringue Clinic for 105G, but it really makes sense to buy a Pot as early as possible in the game so you can cook for yourself. Herbs of every color are found in the Wild, although you can buy Herb Seeds at the Flower Festival, and later from Taylor when he arrives on the island.

Another simple Recipe with excellent SR value is Buckwheat Noodles. One Buckwheat in a Pot creates Buckwheat Noodles with a value of 400 SR. You cannot obtain Buckwheat until your fi rst Winter, but you can then grow it or buy Decent Buckwheat at the Souffl e Inn. It’s a very inexpensive Crop with high nutritional value.

Any Vegetable, Crustacean, and Herb

Where the Recipe includes ‘any Crustacean’ as an Ingredient, you can use any of the following: Freshwater Prawn, Crawfi sh, Lobster, or Rock Lobster. Where ‘Fish’ is an ingredient, you can use any Fish. Where ‘Vegetable’ is listed as an ingredient, use any Vegetable. Where ‘Herb’ is listed, any color or type of Herb can be used. SR refers to Stamina Recovery and is the amount of Stamina restored when the Cooked Dish is consumed. When a Cooked Dish is marked with an asterisk (*), it signifi es an ingredient in a Rainbow Recipe.

le Town

Hamilton is the Mayor of Waffl e Town and a vital character in the quest to restore the Island. His son, Gill, lives with him and is one of the few individuals with personal knowledge of the Harvest Sprites.

You must interact with both Hamilton and Gill at specifi c points in the game to fi nd the Quilt that contains the Legend of the Mother Tree and, ultimately, the true Seedling of Hope.

In your fi rst year on the Island, Mayor Hamilton will be your ‘guide,’ visiting you on the day before any Festival or important Event to explain it to you personally. It is he who awards the prizes to the winners of any Festival Contest.

Hamilton will give you the Recipe for Stewed Potatoes when you speak to him at the Harvest Festival.

Mayor: Let me teach you my recipe. Boil potatoes in a pot. That’s it. This is the best way to savor the ingredients.

It’s not surprising to discover that Potato Dishes are among his Favorite Gifts.

The Mayor’s house is located to the left of the little square that is opposite the Sundae Inn. You often will fi nd him there or on the streets of Waffl e Town. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights, he frequents the Sundae Inn Bar, although he never touches alcohol himself. Ruth and Craig are the owners of the Souffl e Farm, your fi rst source of Seeds and Crops. While her husband generally works outside in his fi elds, Ruth stands at the counter during business hours and serves customers. She complains often about her headaches.

Craig and Ruth have two children, a daughter and a son. You will meet their daughter, Anissa, during your stay at the Souffl e Farm, but their son, Taylor, will not return to the Island until Ferry Service resumes. He then will go into business in competition with his parents.

Barbara is Simon’s wife and is in the General Store during business hours although she does not serve at the counter. She often will speak rather wistfully of her daughter Phoebe, who left Waffl e Island, but who will return after the Ferry Service resumes.

Irene, Jin’s grandmother, is a doctor in her own right, but acts primarily as a midwife. She will announce the impending birth of your Child and ultimately assist with the delivery. Not surprisingly, she loves children. During clinic business hours, she serves customers at the counter.

Taylor is the son of Craig and Ruth, owners of the Souffl e Farm. When he returns to Waffl e Island, he will start his own telephone order business, selling Seeds, Saplings, and Fertilizer in competition to his parents. His sister is Anissa and he often will speak of her rather admiringly.

Simon and his wife, Barbara, are the owners of the General Store, source for Tools, Furniture, Books, Kitchen Utensils, and Makers. Simon is a tireless worker, serving behind the counter during all business hours. Although he may make deprecating remarks about the lack of variety in his stock, he actually sells a wide range of useful, even vital products.

Simon operates a Stall at the Spring and Summer Flea Markets where you will be able to fi nd some food ingredients, including Pontata Root and Bamboo Shoots that are not for sale elsewhere.

Perry is a young boy who comes to Waffl e Island to work at the Meringue Clinic when Ferry Service resumes. He is diligent and hard-working, qualities that earn him Irene’s respect. You will fi nd him in the Clinic during opening hours, grinding ingredients for Medicines in traditional fashion, using a mortar and pestle.

Perry is one of the characters who runs through the streets of Waffl e Town at the New Year, wishing all his neighbors a Happy New Year.

Likes: Chocolate, Pizza

Requirement: To meet Taylor, you must complete Daren’s Rainbow, allowing the Ferry Service between the Islands to resume. Taylor will be the 6th new arrival, if one counts the Tailor Shop as a single arrival.

Useful Advice from Taylor: It’s important to give

everything a try at least once.
