Dear Worldwideans,

Season’s Greetings to all!

We have successfully come back from the annual Budget exercise. The key takeaways from this

year’s meeting are:

1) Grab the opportunities on your way to the maximum

2) A new strategy for harnessing our Agents & Network

3) Gain more leads from the Nominations

4) Pricing team to work closely with Veeru on a strategy for Ocean freight

5) A paradigm shift in HR’s role for the WWL Group

6) Tighter control over the outstandings, to save costs

7) Successful automation of processes thru’ IT

8) 100% Tax compliance

I request all attendees to implement the points discussed and also close the year with max

achievement of budget numbers for the current financial year.

I am happy to share with you that we have achieved a new high in the Tonnage handled by

our team for March 2019 for Air Exports (close to 350 tons), after a long gap of 2 years.

This has been possible with all your hard work and dedication. Thank you and wish you all

to keep up the good work.

Raj and I would be going to USA in April, to meet with our agents, esp. OEC Group offices. We

are poised to garner greater business from them in the coming financial year. I have no doubt

that we can give 100% satisfactory services to our clients and nominations.

For the upcoming State & Central elections in April & May, I wish all Worldwideans exercise their

franchise without fail, to vote for the new leader, keeping in mind our country’s long term vision.

Best wishes,

Bala

Cathay Pacific Cargo remains optimistic about its cargo business, despite registering declines in

its cargo revenues and volumes during the first two months of the year. The carrier group saw

cargo traffic decline by 9.3% in February following on from a 5.2% slide in January.

Germany’s Rhenus Group has continued its 2019 takeover spree by acquiring Johannesburg-

headquartered freight forwarding and logistics specialist World Net Logistics (WNL). In January

this year, Rhenus acquired Italian Logistics company Cesped and only last week announced that it

will buy Canadian logistics provider Rodair. In addition to having a dense network of business

sites in South Africa, WNL also has several branches and partners in Asia and Germany.

Cargo.one is set to add new airlines to its spot-market booking portal this year, following on

from Finnair announcing it would offer its capacity on the platform. Cargo.one hoped that at

least three new airlines would join the platform in 2019.

These would be in addition to Lufthansa carriers and the capacity sold by Leisure Cargo, which

offers the belly capacity of 14 leisure airlines. Meanwhile, Finnair Cargo is set to join in May. On

the customer side, 156 forwarders have signed up to use cargo.one.

Cargo.one is able to offer both live spot rates and actual capacity by connecting directly with

airline systems through API connections. With other platforms, pricing and capacity are often

disconnected.

Containerized imports are settling into a low single-digit growth rate, after starting the first

quarter down 1 percent in the first two months on a year-over-year basis.

It’s predicted that containerized import growth will soften in 2019 to 1.8 percent from last year’s

robust 7.2 percent increase as the US economy slows and retailers burn off inventory overhang

from the front-loading of spring merchandise in late 2018.

Freight forwarder Flexport has begun offering its customers a new product designed primarily to

trim ocean freight costs for full containerload (FCL) shippers that don’t use all or most of the

space inside a container.

Under the terms of the product, called OceanMatch, San Francisco-based Flexport will match

less-than-containerload (LCL) shippers whose cargo is complementary with FCL shippers willing

to sacrifice one to two days of transit time for lower freight costs. The complementary

characteristics for which Flexport optimizes include commodity type, cargo ready date, and origin

and destination.

Adani Ports embarked its journey in 2001 when it was unheard of for private players to enter into

the port sector. It started with Mundra Port but later on there were additions to the portfolio.

Non-major ports were developed at Hazira, Dhamra, Dahej and the newest baby at Kattupalli.

Terminals were developed within Major Ports of the country at Ennore, Kandla, Goa and Vizag

from 2005 to 2018.

Mundra Port remains the crown jewel, but the feat of handling 200 MMT cargo has not been

achieved by one port alone. Collectively the company has generated over 100,000 jobs,

educated over 25,000 students and touched over 200,000 lives. Going forward, APSEZ has set its

sights on higher targets with aims to double growth up to 400 MMT by 2025.

Global trade enabler DP World operated the Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal (NSIGT) has

once again created another benchmark in the logistics sector in the country. The futuristic

container handling facility Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal has been awarded the

prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Looking ahead, Kerry Logistics Hong Kong sees three major trends affecting global logistics: First,

China’s market will continue to grow and become the biggest in the world. Second, strategic

rivalry between China and the US will continue for years to come and disrupt existing global

supply chains. Third, technology is steadily disrupting all aspects of the logistics industry. “We will

give emphasis to the use of information technology, blockchain and AI wherever practical in

warehouse, fleet, freight, contract, and e-commerce management. We will stay nimble and agile

even as our network grows in response to changing threats and opportunities in Asia and the

world.”

Asia Pacific airfreight markets recorded “steep declines” in February according to preliminary

figures issued by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), as demand in freight tonne km

(FTK) terms saw a double-digit fall of 11.9% compared to the same month last year.

The association saw the “prevailing weakness” in air cargo markets “further aggravated” by the

closure of businesses during the region’s holiday period.

Weakness in export activity was driven by slower demand from major advanced and emerging

market economies, including China. The fall in demand vis-à-vis the 1.2% contraction in offered

freight capacity led to a significant drop in the average international freight load factor, by 6.5

percentage points to 53.3% for the month.

Page 18: (Inhouse Magazine of WWL Group)wownobo.go2wwl.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/04/MARCH … · Freight forwarder Flexport has begun offering its customers a new product designed

In contrast, the number of international passengers carried by the region’s airlines climbed 4.4%

higher in February, on top of the strong growth recorded during the same month last year.

Air cargo markets experienced challenging conditions. Declining confidence levels contributed to

further falls in new export orders, adversely affecting demand for air shipments. Taken together,

the first two months of the year saw an 8.3% decline in air cargo demand for Asian carriers.

Looking ahead, the slowdown in the manufacturing sector with the ongoing softening in trade

sentiment point to the likelihood of continued weakness in air cargo markets in the coming

months. Nevertheless, ongoing growth in e-commerce shipments should provide some level of

support to air cargo demand.

Stimulatory fiscal policies implemented by selected economies are expected to encourage

domestic spending. This should support reasonable growth in the global economy this year,

sustaining continued growth in air travel markets. Overall, airlines remain proactive in

responding to changes in demand conditions, and are exploring new avenues to boost revenue

growth whilst managing costs in the face of challenging operating conditions.
