1 Scope and purpose
This test specification describes the testing of sulfide particles on the cutting sample. It applies to free-cutting steels but can also be applied to other steel grades by agreement (e. g. steels with controlled sulfur content). The testing can be car-ried out manually using standard pictures or au-tomatically by image analysis systems. The clas-sifications follow a mathematical system in order to minimise the difference between manual and automatic evaluation. This system was chosen in such a way that it is in good agreement with the standard pictures of SEP 1572:1971. Since statistical parameters of the sulfide distribution can be determined by image analysis in contrast to the manual evaluation, a simple Java image analysis tool can be obtained free of charge from Steel Institute VDEh.
This test specification applies to semi-finished products and finished long and flat products. An application for forgings with a non-linear fiber profile must be agreed separately between the customer and the supplier. Scope of the test, sampling and evaluation require a separate specification in this case.
Neither the determination of acceptance limits nor statements on the desired type of formation of the sulfide particles with regard to the machin-ing behaviour are part of this test specification.
2 Normative references
This test specification does not refer normatively to other test specifications.
3 Terms
The following terms shall apply to the application of this document.
3.1 General terms
3.1.1 Particle
basic unit for the evaluation, for this test specifi-cation limited to sulfides with a length of at least 3 μm (3.2.1) and a width of at least 2 μm (3.2.2)
3.1.2 Test area A, mm2
area to be evaluated on the polished surface of the sample

3.4 Standard pictures
The standard picture chart included in this test specification comprises in its reduced form twelve individual images which are arranged vertically in three “columns” and horizontally in four “rows” (see Figure 2). These are synthetically generated im-ages which contain only particles that correspond to the represented particle class according to 3.5.
The series of images can be expanded by a col-umn 0, a row 0 and rows 5 and higher according to the underlying mathematical principles.
These mathematical principles were chosen in such a way that the chart is in good agreement with the chart of SEP 1572:1971. Since the latter is based on the real images of the picture chart developed by H. Diergarten, which naturally al-ways contain particles of different characteris-tics, the agreement can only be approximated.
3.5 Classes
3.5.1 Column index k,
number from 0 to 3 (reduced 1 to 3), indicating which standard picture chart column a particle belongs to according to Table 1
3.5.2 Row index z,
number from 0 to 7 (reduced 1 to 4), indicating which standard picture chart row a particle be-longs to according to formula (5a) and formula (5b)
3.6 Definition of the particle classification
Particles are classified using the width b and the aspect ratio s. The classification is given by the column index and the row index, and noted k.z. The columns of the standard picture chart are determined using three auxiliary lines g1, g2 and g3 in the s-b space:
3.4 Bildrichtreihe

The rows are determined by the auxiliary vari-able C:
A particle with known C belongs to the row z if
For the row z = 0, the condition is modified:
The row classes are based on a surface dou-bling of the particles. To improve compatibility with SEP 1572: 1971 the centre and scale of the hyperbola were adjusted.
4 Scope of testing
The agreements on the scope of testing shall be specified in the relevant delivery terms. Two samples are generally to be taken per heat and lot.
The test area to be evaluated shall be at least 100 mm² per section for dimensions ≥ 10 mm. In the case of thin dimensions (< 10 mm) the total test area of all sections shall not be less than 200 mm². As far as possible, the test area should be the same size for each sample.
For samples with a high sulfide content (e.g. free-cutting steels) the test area per section can be reduced by mutual agreement.
Note 1: The representativeness of the test decreases with a decreasing number of samples, so that no fewer than two samples should be taken per heat.

5 Sampling and specimen preparation
5.1 Sampling
The samples must be taken in such a way that the evaluated surface lies parallel to the main deformation direction and for rotationally sym-metrical cross-sections coplanar to the axis of the product.
Unless otherwise agreed, the sampling proce-dure shall be as follows:a) bar or billets with a diameter above 50 mm: the
test area shall be located halfway between the outer surface and the centre. The longer side shall be perpendicular and the shorter side parallel to the main deformation direction (see Figure 3);
b) bar with a diameter greater than 25 mm and less than or equal to 50 mm: the surface to be examined consists of half the diametric section (from the centre to the edge of the specimen) (see Figure 4);
c) bar with a diameter less than or equal to 25 mm: the surface to be examined consists of the full diametric section (see Figure 5);
d) plates with a thickness less than 25 mm: the spec-imen contains the whole thickness (see Figure 6);
e) plates with a thickness between 25 mm and 50 mm: the specimen contains half the thick-ness, position between surface and centre (see Figure 7);
f) plates with a thickness greater than 50 mm: the specimen contains one quarter of the thickness. The position is not defined (see Figure 8).
5 Probenahme und Schliffvorbereitung
5.1 Probenahme
von über 50 mm: Die Messfläche muss mittig zwischen Oberfläche und Mitte liegen. Die län-gere Seite muss senkrecht und die kürzere Sei-te muss parallel zur Hauptverformungsrichtung liegen (siehe Bild 3);
b) Stabstahl mit einem Durchmesser kleiner gleich 50 mm, aber größer als 25 mm: Die zu prüfende Fläche umfasst den halben Quer-schnitt (von der Mitte bis zur Außenkante der Probe) (siehe Bild 4);
c) Stabstahl mit einem Durchmesser kleiner gleich 25 mm: Die zu prüfende Fläche umfasst den gesamten Querschnitt (siehe Bild 5);
d) Bleche mit einer Dicke kleiner als 25 mm: Die Probe umfasst die gesamte Dicke (siehe Bild 6);
e) Bleche mit einer Dicke zwischen 25 mm und 50 mm: Die Probe umfasst die halbe Dicke, Lage zwischen Oberfläche und Mitte (siehe Bild 7);

5.2 Specimen preparation
The samples will generally be evaluated in pol-ished and unetched condition. During the speci-men preparation the effects of artefacts such as scratches, implanted polishing particles, dust, water or alcohol stains must be minimized. The extraction of particles must be avoided. Harden-ing before sample preparation is recommended for suitable steels. The final preparation should be carried out with a polishing agent having a maximum grain size of 3 μm.For recommendations concerning microscope and camera settings when using an image analy-sis system see Annex A.
5.2 Schliffvorbereitung

6 Testing procedure
By default, the test is carried out at a magnifi-cation of 100:1, either manually or using image analysis. Especially for automated systems other magnification settings might be appropriate tak-ing into account the resolution and the task at hand.
Note: By mutual agreement the test area can be divided into test zones (e.g. edge - transition - core).
6.1 Image analysis test
The pre-determined test area is scanned in a grid pattern. For each image, the detected particles are catalogued individually with their parameters (see 3.2) and their classification. Particles that intersect the image edge are sep-arated at the image edge. Particles with a length > 710 μm are noted as oversized.
The field of view is classified according to the k.z-class of the particles areally predominant in the field of view. To determine this, the area of all particles in the field of view is summed up for each class. The classification for the field of view is the class with the highest sum value.
The result of the test is the k.z class with the most fields of view assigned (modal value). In the case of equality (multiple modes), the result is the class with the highest row index or, in the case of equal row indices, the class with the highest column index.
In addition to the classification the image analy-sis provides the area fraction AA of the particles in the test area:
Possible further results are the average and me-dian of the length, of the width, of the area, and of the aspect ratio as well as the mean free path.
6.2 Manual test
With an eyepiece graticule corresponding to a square of 710 μm x 710 μm on the sample sur-face, the pre-determined test surface is system-atically scanned in a grid pattern. For each field of view the image of the standard picture chart cor-

responding most closely to the microscope im-age is recorded. The human eye tends to weight particle classes by surface, which is why there is good agreement with image analysis. Particles with a length > 710 μm are noted as oversized.
The result of the test is the k.z class which was most frequently recorded (modal value). In case of equality (multiple modes) the result is the class with the highest row index or, in the case of equal row indices, the class with the highest column index.
The manual test cannot provide any further pa-rameters beyond the classification.
6.3 Expanded and reduced test
The image evaluation of the reduced evalua-tion (1 ≤ k ≤ 3 and 1 ≤ z ≤ 4) is carried out as follows:- Particle areas of classes 0.z are added to the
corresponding classes 1.z;- Particle areas of classes k.0 are added to the
corresponding classes k.1;- Particle areas of the classes k.z with
z > 4 are added to the corresponding classes k.4.
In the case of manual reduced evaluation the expanded images are hidden.
In the case of expanded evaluation these three steps are not carried out or only partially carried out in accordance with the agreement; in the case of manual evaluation any expanded images are hidden which are not desired according to the agreement.
7 Test report
The test report shall specify with reference to this test method:a) Steel grade and heat designationb) Form and dimension for which the result
should be validc) Applied procedure (image analysis or manual
test; expanded test, if applied)d) The result of the classification as well as in case of
image analysis the further parameters (at least AA), rounded to a maximum of three significant digits

Annex A: Notes on the image analysis evaluation (informative)
Only the image analysis evaluation is able to de-termine the particle class according to its defini-tion (see 3.5) directly from the measured particle dimensions.
The manual evaluation method uses the standard picture chart comparison to classify the fields of view and does not evaluate individual particles.
The entire dynamic range of 8-bit gray values or colour values should be used in the automated detection of particles. The settings of the mi-croscope and of the digital image source must be set according to the manufacturer’s recom-mendations in order to achieve the maximum possible dynamic range. The image source must be set to a gamma correction value of 1 if it has an adjustable gamma (gamma correction).
The matrix should appear as an approximate normal distribution in the upper range of the gray scale. Everything outside this matrix normal dis-tribution in the direction of gray value 0 (black) is to be assessed as particles. In the case of steels with controlled sulfide content, the light gray sulfides are usually predominant in such a way that the result is not falsified when the dark gray oxides are also evaluated as sulfides.
The threshold g can be set manually or via an algorithm. The Java tool available at the VDEh uses the triangulation method, see C.2. The se-lected segmentation should be checked. The Flicker method (switching method) is a recog-nised method for this purpose.
So that the image analysis evaluation can base its calculation on reliable data it is recommended to choose a combination of camera and micro-scope that maps the smallest particles to be considered with at least 5 pixels.
Anhang A: Anmerkungen zur bildanalytischen Auswertung (informativ)

Annex C: Documentation of the VDEh Java tool (informative)
C.1 Philosophy
Given that in the case of the high particle density of a free-cutting steel a manual evaluation of the individual particles is much too time-consuming, that manual standard picture chart comparisons are subject to a strong tester-dependent scatter and that commercial image analysis systems are too costly for smaller companies, it was de-cided during the revision of SEP 1572: 1971 to provide an analysis tool free of charge. It can be obtained from Steel Institute VDEh, runs on Java and is provided without guarantee of function, comfort and support.
C.2 Operating principle
The Java tool evaluates image by image. It gen-erates a black-and-white image from the gray value image by a threshold method: a thresh-old g (gray scale value) is selected, and then, in the new image, each pixel with an original gray value > g is dyed black; all other pixels are dyed white. The Java tool automatically sets the threshold value g according to the triangula-tion method by Zack (Zack GW) and multiplies it by a smooth factor f, which can be set by the operator, to reduce the sensitivity to scratches. Using the calibration factor, the particles in the black-and-white image are individually evalu-ated according to 6.1.
C.3 Operation
Prerequisites for application on a computer are an installed Java as well as images of inclu-sions with the main direction of deformation in the horizontal direction. The tool is started with a batch program and uses the command line for entering parameters. The calibration factor must be entered for the first run, followed by the minimum length (default 3 μm) and minimum width (default 2 μm), and finally the smooth fac-tor (default 0.95). The images are then selected for analysis, either by drag & drop (does not sup-port blanks in the name) or via manual input. The results are output in a Result.txt file which can be renamed to Result.csv and opened in a spreadsheet program.
Anhang C: Dokumentation des VDEhJavaTools (informativ)
C.1 Philosophie
