Industrialbiocatalysis:In the early 1970’sDSM implementedthe first industrialbiocatalytic process.

Chiral amino acids are produced usingspecific enzymes, able to synthesizetarget enantiomers with exceptionalpurity. A whole toolbox of enzymes andchemical catalysts is now available forproducing chiral ingredients for thepharmaceutical industry.

The world’sstrongest fiber:In the 1990’s DSMdevelopedDyneema®, theworld’s strongest

fiber. Initially developed for cut resistantfabrics and bullet proof vests it is 40times stronger than steel. Now used innumerous applications ranging fromfishing lines to ropes in offshoreapplications, high performing fabrics orreinforced and durable materials forvehicles and power plants. Latest focusis on the use of Dyneema in invasivemedical applications.

Clean antibioticsproduction:In 1996 DSMpioneered the firstcommercialproduction of semi-

synthetic antibiotics based on microbialfermentation instead of chemicalsynthesis. Identifying new enzymes andconstructing new biosynthetic pathwaysby modern genetic technologies alloweda dramatic decrease in theenvironmental impact of antibioticproduction.

Form requirements

Bioavailability:The nutrient should have a chemicalstructure which is fully metabolized andthe product formulation should provideprotection but release the nutrient uponingestion.

Stability:The ingredient must remain stable “asis” or in blends and premixes. Thereforethe ingredient must be adequatelystabilized in a chemical and/or productform which when stored, transported, milled, or mixed, maintains its activity. The product form must be resistant toactivity loss due to environmental factorssuch as temperature, moisture, andoxygen.

Uniformity:The particle size and size distributiondetermines how well the nutrient isdispersed throughout the finishedproduct, impacting the nutrient activityper serving. A uniform productminimizes the tendency for nutrients tosegregate when mixed and transportedwith other micro-ingredients, allowsadequate flow through equipment duringproduction and reduces dust formationwhen handled.

Consistency in potency:For reliable dosing of a nutrient inproduction, potency must be consistentboth particle-to-particle and lot-to-lot.The availability of appropriate dilutionssupports the accuracy of dosing duringproduction.

Dissolution behaviour:The form of the nutrient dictates itsaqueous (water) or non-aqueous (fats oroils) solubility or miscibility. Thesephysical characteristics influence thedistribution of the functional ingredient inthe final pet product, its colour, textureand/or shelf life.

Certain basic characteristics arerequired if the ingredient form is toachieve the envisioned nutritionalvalue of the pet food product:

Production: Functional ingredients such as vitamins or carotenoids are producedeither by chemical synthesis, by fermentation, by extraction (often from a naturalsource) or by a combination of these technologies.

Modification: Once the basic functional compound is produced it may be furtherprocessed to develop a more stable chemical form, using processes such ascrystallisation of an organic salt, esterification and phosphorylation.

Formulation: To achieve specific product characteristics the ingredients thenundergo a formulation process. Such formulation creates highly specified nutrientforms optimally equipped to meet the specifications within a pet food, food or feedproduct.

Productioonn of ingredient forms

Crystalline gradesNutrient compounds are chemically modified to form organic salt which after dryingare not further formulated but used “as is”.Optionally crystalline material can be coated with ethyl cellulose which slows anypossible detrimental influence of other ingredients present in the formula.

AdsorbatesSuitable carriers such as silica particles are prepared for absorbing mainly fatsoluble nutrients. Adsorption has the advantage of delivering an economicallyattractive dry form of an intrinsically stable nutrient, and results in a free-flowingpowder with good mixability, flowability and dust characteristics.

Spray-dried powdersSpray-drying is applied for many of the water soluble nutrients to enhancestability, handling and distribution. The nutrient compound is added into a dextrinsolution. The solution is spray dried into a powder, which offers a variety ofadvantages including stabilizing the nutrients and delivering it in a digestiblematrix.

BeadletsIn beadlet technology nutrient compounds are emulsified in a gelatine, starch andglycerine matrix, with an antioxidant sometimes added to increase stability. The emulsion is then sprayed to form beadlets which are coated with corn starch toabsorb excess moisture. Moist beadlets are dried to produce the finished beadlet.Micronization of the often oily functional ingredient allows the production of stable, yet dispersable beadlets for clear liquids.

Cross-linked BeadletAdditional chemical bonds are introduced to create a hardenedbeadlet most commonly referred to as a cross-linked beadlet.A chemical reaction occurs which creates cross-linked bondsthereby creating a more rigid structure. This technology providesexcellent stability and is used to protect nutrients in hightemperature applications.

Applications for pet nutritiA variety of technologies for shape, size, texture, moisture and form

The pet food market is characterized by a wide variety of different product forms. This occurred becauseingredient forms were developed to support changes in formulation, process conditions, and packaging.

Specially formulated nutritive and functional ingredients are often the key to the successful developmentof foods, treats, and supplement products. As a leader in nutritional ingredient form development, DSMoffers a comprehensive range of ingredients suitable for the full range of manufacturing processes andformulation options our customers use to create products with distinct points of differentiation.

Extruded productsExtrusion, one of the harshest processing technologies, is used to produce food and treatproducts. This process typically requires ingredients to be exposed to high temperatures, pressure, moisture, sheer, rapid expansion, and a drying step.

For this application, nutritive ingredients need to be resistant to rapid changes intemperature, pressure and moisture heat, sheer, and oxidation throughout manufacturingplus remain shelf stable for 18-24 months.

Baked productsFood, treat, and flaked products aremanufactured using baking. Initially, dough is formed exposing theingredients to moisture and sometimesenzymes. The formed dough is heated tothe desired degree of cook and dryness.

For this application, nutritive ingredientsneed to be resistant to heat, moisture, enzymes, and oxidation throughoutmanufacturing plus remain shelf stablefor 18-24 months.

Pets Catalogue - Part 1-2012-B_Layout 2 21.03.12 14:30 Seite 17

Milk and fatty liquidsHigh fat(oil) paste and liquid productsrange from infant food to lubricants forthe gastro-intestinal tract to aid mobilityand control hairballs. During manufac-turing these types of fatty liquids oftenexperience high shear during mixing andhomogenisation, high temperaturesduring sterilization, and unwantedenzyme activity.

For this application, nutritive ingredientsmay need to be resistant to UV light, oxidation, sheer, high and rapidlychanging temperatures, enzyme activity, display high miscibility and emulsificationproperties during manufacturing plusremain shelf stable for 3 to 24 monthswithout causing sedimentation or othernegative product attributes.

itionInjection moldingThis process is used to manufacturetreats and chews where appearance, structure and actual product design aremajor challenges. This process usuallyinvolves high temperatures with a lowsheer and moisture.

For this application, nutritive ingredientsneed to be resistant to high andchanging temperatures, and oxidation. The finished product color and hardnessmust not be adversely affected andremain shelf stable for 24 months.

Dry mixes and powdersDry mixture products range fromsupplements to milk replacers. Dryblends require ingredients that can bedispersed readily throughout themixture, not prone to particle segre-gation/separation and are chemicallystable. Some are designed to be addedto liquids and must be readily soluble ormiscible.

For this application, nutritive ingredientsusually need to be uniform in particlesize and density, chemically and heatstable, have a low propensity to createan electrostatic charge, not attractmoisture plus resist oxidation throughmanufacturing and storage. The finishedproduct color must also not be adverselyaffected.

Clear solutionsBottled waters are sometimes used todeliver functional ingredients. Unlikeother liquid products, formulating whilemaintaining clarity is the challenge.

In addition to the attributes associatedwith manufactured liquid products, nutritive ingredients for this applicationmust not react to other ingredients, UVlight or oxidation causing a loss ofnutritive value, colouration orsedimentation.

21

Wet productsWet food styles include loaf (pate) andchunk-in gravy foods and treats.Initially, meat and other ingredients aremixed with or without heat for variousperiods of time. This mixture is eitherplaced in a container, sealed and cookedat a high temperature or cooked using a

steam tunnel, formed into chunks, sealed in a container with gravy, andcooked again at a high temperature.

For this application, nutritive ingredientsneed to be resistant to moisture, oxi-dation, enzymes, and extreme changesin temperature throughout manufac-turing. Finally the finished product colormust not be adversely affected plusremain shelf stable for 24 months.

Compressed tabletsTablets are swallowed, chewed ordissolved to deliver their functionalingredients. During manufacturing theingredients may be ground and screenedto obtain a uniform particle size. The finalblend experiences pressure and sheerwhile forming the tablets. Depending onthe packaging, the tablets may be ex-posed to moisture and oxygen.

Some tablets are formulated to effervescewhen added to water subsequently ex-posing the ingredients to moisture, changes in pH, and further oxidation foran undefined period of time.

For this application, nutritive ingredientsneed to be resistant to pressure, shear, oxidation, and possibly reduction inparticle size, changes in pH and moisture.
