STRATEGY and PRACTICESTRATEGY and PRACTICE
• Researched apps that were age-oriented.• Integrated Smartphones and Apps into our Learning Plans.• Developed App-tivities for our regular activities.• Built a Learning Community using a Wiki.• Educated students and teachers.
WHY SMARTPHONES?WHY SMARTPHONES?
• Integration of technology using smartphones allows for total participation.
• One on one abilities allow for the learning to be tailored to the student.
• Keeping up to date!
POTENTIAL CHALLENGESPOTENTIAL CHALLENGES
•Time constraints.
•Technological Issues.
•Learning curve for students and teachers.
•Access to necessities.
•Software updates and app changes.
PROs PROs
• Engaged students.• Fun educational outcomes.• Smooth integration of activities and technology.• Easier transition from comprehensible input to comprehensible
output in activities and final project.

The Use of Technology
at Hunter Chinese STARTALK to
Build a Post-summer Program
STARTALK Fall 2017 Meeting Portland, Oregon
November 4, 2017

Several Questions to Consider Before Adopting
or Designing a Technology Product:
• Can it enhance aspects of teaching and address
hard-to-solve learning difficulties?
• Does the product have a design that is accessible
and acceptable by the majority of teachers and
students?
• Will it have a broad impact on teaching and
learning? Will it be useful in the long run?
• Will it benefit a wide range of users?
• Does it have low maintenance costs? Is it easy to
update?
Hunter Has Been Developing Online
Technology Since 2009
• Recruited volunteer or paid developers
• Recruited volunteer or paid students/interns
• Hired language teachers who know computer
programming
• Engaged language teachers who are
interested in technology
• Held weekly online tech meetings faithfully
Technology Can Help Students Overcome
Learning Difficulties and Extend Out of Class
Learning
Language Learning Challenges: Tones, pronunciation, characters, measure words, and more
Technology Solutions: Designed a wealth of web-based Flash materials to address these issues and put the materials into a Resources Bank; adopted useful tools online.
Make Quality Instruction Accessible for
Learners
Problem: Students in the STARTALK program wanted to continue learning the language after the summer.
Solution: Offer online one-on-one post-summer program.
Problem: No synchronous platform and learning
management system suitable for language learning.
Solution: Build a learning management system and Live
Classroom.
Chinese for All
Live Classroom
Who Has Used These Tools?
• STARTALK students and teachers (2009-2017)
and Flagship students (2011-2017) at Hunter
• Partner school students (Hunter High School,
Frederick County Catholic School, Jericho School
District, and several STARTALK programs)
Challenge: Technology Advances
Constantly
New Problems with Technology: Flash is not supported by iOS. Users need to download software to view pages.
Solutions: (Work in Progress)
1: Convert Flash materials to HTML5
2: Design mobile Apps: Concentration Game with content management system: Link
3: Chinese For All (mobile version) and Live
Classroom App Version: Link
