The FMA Informative was fortunate in being able to meet and talk with Grandmaster Jay Saceda Jumawan. This is a practitioner that is very pleasant, reserved, quiet, and lets his actions speak for him. Once Grandmaster Jumawan commences to demonstrate his art he is one of the most energetic individu-als that the FMA Informative has witnessed. His movements are like poetry in motion, smooth, rhythmic, flow-ing, and demonstrating an energy that has no limits with a demonstration of strength and power that seems to be a natural part of him. Grandmaster Jumawan is a most impressive individual. Grandmaster Jumawan is a very busy man, in that he is constantly demonstrating his abilities teaching, promoting his program called S.M.A.R.T. Arnis Sports Program, a summer sports program in Makati City, Phil-ippines. (Mayor Jun-Jun Binay Jr. who started the program 11 years ago for the under privilege children of the area, this year (2013) appointed Grandmaster Jumawan to head up the program for Arnis and Tae Kwon Do). Grandmaster Jumawan has been so active and busy that it was impossible for the FMA Informative to get him to write captions for the techniques in this issue. However if the reader looks it is for sure that you can see the technique and understand the movements demonstrated by Grandmaster Jumawan.Grandmaster “Hamsa” Jay Saceda Jumawan Grandmaster Jumawan resides in Makati City, Philippines and works at Makati City Hall as a technician. He is the head instructor at the Makati City Hall promoting the S.M.A.R.T. Arnis/Taekwondo Summer Program by Mayor Junjun Binay. Grandmaster Jumawan is the youngest Eskrimador promoted to Grandmaster 10th Dan Red Belt Pu-lang Patnubay, by Senior Grandmaster Vicente R. Sanchez who promoted him in 2010. Also he has been train-ing with Supreme Grandmaster Restie Obispo and was promoted by Grandmaster Obispo on January 30, 2013 to 10th Dan Red Belt Escrima Hantik Arnis. And finally he is a student of Supreme Grandmaster Prudencio “Undo” Caburnay. Grandmaster Jumawan past 2 Guru’s passed away a long time ago, their names were Maestro Wencislao Ubanan and Colonel Romeo Daclan of Cebu. Introduction and HistoryGrandmaster “Hamsa” Jay Saceda Jumawan has basically three Filipino mar-tial arts instructors:- Senior Grandmaster Vicente R. Sanchez of LSAI, Modern Arnis, Cinco Teros, and Kasilagan - Supreme Grandmaster Restie Obispo of Hantik Arnis Style - Senior Grandmaster Caburnay of - Lapunti Arnis de Abanico Internationalwhich he credits to his style of Jumawan Arnis Step. Combining these three systems plus of course adding his personal knowledge.

The concept behind Ju-mawan Arnis Step is defending if attacked using one block - one strike. So it is the fundamentals that when the attacker strikes, simultaneously the student blocks diverting the energy of the attack-ers strike and a strike is delivered. In training with Grand-master Jumawan a student learns Mano-Mano (empty hand) and Arnis with bladed weapons. Physi-cal fitness is also a key in the art, stretching and flexibility in move-ments for drills such as dos manos and knife. Also developing power, which when flexibility and power are combined with speed and ac-curacy it makes for a dominating practitioner. Of course heart is a

Characteristics of Lapunti Arnis de Abanico Lapunti is characterised first of all by the fast “fan” like moves or “abanico” moves of its primary teaching tool, the stick. Other aspects similar to other styles of Arnis/Escrima are also given equal importance. The dagger, stick and dagger, double stick and Comb-atto unarmed fighting are taught as well. The footwork is a combination of classical Arnis/Escrima forward-backward movements, a triangle system of offence and defence and the cross-legged and twisting style learnt from Kung Fu. The main emphasis in Lapunti is on long range but with the combination of the tight footwork the fighter has excellent mobil-ity and with the speed of the strikes the encounter can be at close range as well. The style is based on body dynamics, not strength, in combination with the footwork.

Basic System of instruction:

The fundamentals are 12 basic Lapunti strikes. The 12 counter-strikes. Attack and retreat. Basic defence and disarming and mul-tiple strikes.

LSAI stands for Lightning Scientific Arnis International. It is an organization promoting and preserving the style of arnis/kali, which was developed and refined by Grandmaster Benjamin Luna Lema. It is a complete system of martial arts, which stresses both speed and poser. The system encompasses solo baston, doble baston, espada y daga, and empty hands.

very important factor, for without heart truly the determination of the coordination of mind and body is not accomplished.
