Every two days there is as much new data generated as was created in the first 2000 years of our history. The “Internet ofThings” and related trends will further increase the amount ofdata generated every day. Successful businesses throughout theworld have become increasingly reliant on a rapidly expandingamount of data to remain competitive. This “unstructured” data, which often consists of web activity, video and audio recordings, photographs, e-mails, and tweets, can be combined with “struc-tured” data, such as financial specifics of a customer order, toprovide the organization with the critical intelligence and insightrequired to succeed in a highly competitive global marketplace. A drop in the price of hardware required to deal with these largedata sets coupled with improved functionality of a wide variety of Big Data software tools has created a perfect storm with sky-rocketing demand for individuals with the skills to manipulate and analyze these data sets. The Big Data certificate providesindividuals with the background needed to effectively collect andmanage extremely large amounts of information, perform data-driven discovery and prediction, extract value and competitiveintelligence for their organizations.

Who Should EnrollThis program is designed for individuals within a wide range ofprofessional or academic backgrounds who desire to learn how tobetter collect, store, analyze, and act on large data sets to drivebusiness results.

Program Benefitsn Turn existing large, structured and un-structured data sets

into cohesive information and extract valuable insight to solvebusiness issues.

n Use industry standard Analytic tools including, Hadoop,Teradata, Knime, Aster, IBM-Netiza, HP-Veritca, Statistica, R,Python and Crystal Ball

n Develop the strategies and skills needed to effectively collectand manage big data and perform data-driven discovery, prediction, and prescription

n Develop big data architectural strategies for your organization n Improve business processes efficiency and customer satisfac-

tionn Understand data architecture software including Hadoop,

Teradata and Aster, and related tools (Java, SQL and MRSQL)n Integrate powerful and traditionally untapped sources of

unstructured big data including social media data and otherweb generated information

Specialized Studies Award RequirementsStudents must complete 11 credit units (4 required and 7 electivecredit units) with a grade of “C” or higher in each course. Allrequirements must be completed within 5 years after the studentenrolls in his/her first course. Companies that build data warehouses and use business intelligence for decision-making ultimately save money andincrease profit. In addition, initiatives ranging from supply chainintegration to compliance with government-mandated reportingrequirements (such as Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA) depend onwell designed data warehouse architecture. This specializedstudies program introduces you to the main components of adata warehouse for business intelligence applications. Learn how a data warehouse fits into the overall strategy of a complexenterprise, how to develop data models useful for business intelligence, and how to combine data from disparate sourcesinto a single database that comprises the core of your data warehouse. Explore how to define and specify useful manage-ment reports from warehouse data.

Who Should EnrollData systems modelers, database administrators, data architects,IT managers, business analysts, CIOs, and others who need totake data from different databases or data sources and combinethem into a single repository that can be used to produce execu-tive dashboards, generate summary reports, and glean “hidden”information from business databases. Those who provide therequests for data in order to analyze trends and systems shouldalso attend.

Program Benefitsn Explain how a data warehouse combined with good business

intelligence can increase a company’s bottom linen Describe the components of a data warehousen Describe different forms of business intelligence that can be

gleaned from a data warehouse and how that intelligence canbe applied toward business decision-making

n Develop dimensional models from which key data for criticaldecision-making can be extracted

n Sketch out the process for extracting data from disparate databases and data sources, and then transform the data foreffective integration into a data warehouse

n Load extracted and transformed data into the data warehouse

Specialized Studies Award RequirementsStudents must complete all 3 courses with a grade of “C” or higher in each course in order to qualify for the BusinessIntelligence and Data Warehousing specialized studies award. Allrequirements must be completed within 5 years after the studentenrolls in his/her first course.
