Giant Panda Breeding CenterIn 1961 a giant panda was firstly fund in China. The giant panda, the specialty of Sichuan Province, mainly disperse over Sichuan, Shanxi and Gansu provinces. There are less than 1,000 wild giant pandas in the world, more than 85 per cent of which live in Sichuan. A small number of giant pandas can be found in Dujiangyan, Chongzhou, Dayi and Pengzhou in the suburbs of Chengdu.

In order to protect the wild giant panda, we have established State-level Long xi-Hongkou Nature Reserve in Dujiangyan, the provincial-level Anzihe Giant Panda Reserve in Chongzhou and the provincial-level Heishuihe Giant Panda Reserve. The Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base is the only one established in a large city in the world that was established to protect and rescue the giant pandas. Covering an area of 36.5 hectares, the base is well-shaded and nice and cool. In the park there are running water, well-equipped research centre, modern delivery room, veterinary hospital and the giant panda museum.

By the end of 2004, the base together with the Chengdu Zoo had bred 57 giant pandas through artificial dissemination. 87 baby pandas were born and 46 survived. The semi-wild breeding ground imitating the giant panda's habitat in the wild, which covers an area of 150 hectares, will be completed, Because of its great achievements in the protection of the giant pandas, the base has won the "Global 500" from the United Nations Environmental Program and many awards in China.
