Trinity Academy Information for Students and Parents

Raising standards...

2012/2013

Mission Statementto provide all students and staff with the opportunity to work hard to • achieve their personal best

to encourage personal, moral and spiritual development within a • Christian framework

to create a disciplined, sensitive environment where everyone is • equally valued

Core ValuesAll of our work will be characterised by the following values:

Honourable PurposeWe aim to be positive in everything, doing what is good and aiming to benefi t others as well as ourselves.

HumilityWe seek to do our personal best without bragging and to encourage others to achieve their best without being critical or jealous of their efforts.

CompassionWe care for those who are in diffi culty and who are hurting, recognising that the world does not exist for us alone.

IntegrityWe can be trusted to be honest and truthful, to say what we mean and to do what we say.

AccountabilityWe recognise that in having the freedom to express ourselves we must also accept responsibility for our words, thoughts and actions.

CourageWe aim to do what is right, whatever the cost; we stand up for the weak, whatever the danger; we face our fears and fi nd ways of defeating them.

DeterminationWe know that hard work and the refusal to give up are essential if we are to achieve anything worthwhile.

Starting at secondary school is always an important landmark in a child’s life. It is also a signifi cant moment for us as parents as it reminds us that they grow up so quickly! Starting ‘big school’ is both exciting and scary, and we hope that the meetings we have arranged for you as parents together with the visits we have already made to meet the children in their primary schools will make the transition as smooth as possible. We look forward to working in partnership with you over the next seven years, to mould and shape your child’s development and future.

We have a ‘state of the art’ new school and we want everyone in Thorne and Moorends to know that we are proud to go to Trinity Academy. Wearing our uniform with pride is a major step in this direction, whether we are in school or on the way to or from home. People around Doncaster have come to recognise our uniform, and we can impress them by our behaviour and appearance, or we can let each other down by misbehaving or looking untidy.

Uniforms do, of course, make us all look similar but they should also make us feel equal. We shouldn’t judge each other on our ability to afford the latest fashions or the most expensive designer label. Our personalities should shine through because of the people we are, not because of what we can afford to wear to school.

Nevertheless, how we look is important and the Academy uniform helps to let people see that we are young adults who want to take school seriously.

INTRODUCTION

UNIFORM

Punctuality is an important part of self-discipline and is essential to good time management. If your child arrives after 8:30am then they must enter the Academy through the main entrance and sign in the late book at the Reception desk. If they arrive at the Academy after 9:00am this is counted as an absence and must be explained by a letter from parents.

When your child is absent, for a medical reason, you should inform the Academy by telephone on each day of absence. When your child returns they are expected to bring in a note on the day of their return which is signed by their parent. Alternatively a telephone message to explain their absence would also be acceptable.

If absent for a reason which is non-medical then the Principal, Mr Brew, must be informed in writing well in advance of the proposed absence. The Academy’s policy is to not authorise absence for family holidays during term time.

PUNCTUALITY & ATTENDANCE

Two School Buses run from Moorends at the beginning of the day, departing from “The Winning Post”, these are in addition to the scheduled service buses. Schedule times do change frequently so please check with the bus company which is the First Group. Students from Stainforth will need to catch the 87 bus and those from Hatfi eld the 88 bus. Please contact the First Group bus company for travelling times.

At the end of the school day there will be two school buses running to Moorends. For those staying at the Academy for extra-curricular activities the scheduled service buses run to Moorends six times an hour. Buses also run to Stainforth and Hatfi eld every 20 minutes.

Students will be entitled to free transport provided by DMBC to and from the Academy if the Academy is:

Their catchment area school, or• The school at which the Local Authority has allocated a place as a result of an unsuccessful parental preference for another • school, orA school in which there is no increase in cost (to the Local Authority) of providing transport to their catchment area • school, or the school allocated to the Local Authority.

In addition DMBC have introduced the following new categories of entitlement to free transport for families on low income with secondary pupils aged 11-16

Attending any of the three nearest schools, between 2 and 6 miles from the student’s home• Attending the nearest school preferred by reason of the parent’s religion or belief, where the distance is over 2 miles and • up to 15 miles from the student’s home.

Further information on free transport can be obtained from the Pupil Support and Transport section on 01302 736080, or email [email protected]

All students are entitled to a Mega Travel pass which gives reduced fares on the buses. Most students will have already had the opportunity to apply for a Mega Travel pass through their Primary Schools, but for any who have missed out they may obtain an application form from the Academy or directly from the travel company (please see www.travelsouthyorkshire.com for further details).

Parents who bring their child to school by car are requested to use the dropping off point inside the Academy campus and to respect the No Parking zones outside the Academy.

We will be running a number of clubs, sports and extra-curricular activities on Monday to Thursday evenings from 3:45 to 5:30pm, including many of our House fi xtures. Please encourage your child to get involved in these wider educational activities which will enrich their development.

The library is open to students from 7:30 to 8:30am every morning, and from 3:45 to 5:45pm every evening except Fridays, when it closes at 5:00pm. A Homework Club is held here for those who fi nd it diffi cult to study at home or who need to use ICT resources for their homework. If they prefer, students may simply use the library for reading or working on computers.

TRANSPORT

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

3

Students must come prepared for every lesson, and this will mean having at least two pens, pencils, a ruler and an eraser. They will also need a bag to carry their books from lesson to lesson, as there are no lockers in the Academy. School bags with the Academy logo must be purchased from the school and will be on sale from the school shop and during the uniform sales days in August.

Each child will have their own personal planner which includes a diary where they should note down the homework as it is set. We ask that parents check their child’s planner at least once a week to check that homework has been done and to sign the planner in the space provided.

The carrying of medication in the Academy, either in pockets or in bags, is strictly forbidden on safety grounds. If your child is prescribed a short course of medication (e.g. antibiotics), only the amount required for the day should be brought into the Academy. This should be left at Reception, from where it will be taken to the medical room to be administered at the correct time. It is not recommended that an entire bottle of tablets be brought in as students often forget to collect these at the end of the Academy day.

If your child takes regular medication on a long-term basis, a supply may be brought into the Academy and be kept under lock and key in the Medical Room. The supply should not be too large as space is limited.

A letter from parents should accompany any medications brought into the Academy, whether it is for short or long-term use. The letter should be dated and should clearly state the condition for which the medication is to be taken. All medications should, of course, be clearly marked with your child’s name and tutor group.

All parents will be given a form to complete indicating if they wish to give permission for the Academy to administer paracetamol. Giving permission enables us to treat mild headaches etc., without the need for sending students home. If we give your child any medication, we will send them home at the end of the day with written details of what they have been given and when.

Everyone who comes to Trinity deserves to work in an Academy which is safe, secure and enjoyable. Respect, honesty and good manners are therefore essential, and no behaviour will be tolerated which threatens these values.

Poor behaviour or work-rate is dealt with by way of a detention. Detentions are held Monday to Thursday after school, and are overseen by senior staff. Parents will always be given at least 24 hours notice by way of text message if their child is required to attend.

CAROL SERVICEThe highlight of the fi rst term in Year 7 is the annual Carol Service. This is held after school just before Christmas with a very special choir - the whole of Year 7!

Rehearsals start in November during assemblies and as well as singing we will practice how to sit and stand in perfect synchronisation - when 225 people all sit down at exactly the same time it is awesome.

In addition to the traditional carols we will have some modern songs, a drama sketch, readings and some dance. It will be a thoroughly enjoyable evening that you and your parents will remember for the rest of your time at Trinity.

5

We want every student to feel that they have the opportunity to make suggestions that could improve the Academy even more. Each year group has a student committee with representatives from every tutor group, and Mr Brew will give each of these committees a special area of school life to discuss. Before we begin we will need to hold elections to fi nd out who the representatives will be. Will you be willing to stand for election?

Lunch will be served in three sittings: Years 7 & 8 11:35 - 12:20 Years 9 & 10 12:20 - 1:05 Years 11, 12 & 13 1:05 - 1:50During these times lessons continue as normal for those year groups not in lunch. All students will remain on the Academy premises from 8:30am until 3:45pm including the lunch break. Food, including packed lunches from home, may only be eaten in the Academy restaurants.

One common parental concern centres on their children’s lunchtimes. The Academy has listened to these concerns in arranging that:

Good healthy food is always available;• All students remain on site during lunchtime and are • supervised;By using Direct Debit and the biometric system, • money given by parents to their children for meals cannot be lost, stolen or spent on “other things”;Parents keep up-to-date with what their children are • buying for lunch.

The lunch system operates without cash and students pay for their meals using a biometric fi ngerprint system or pin number.

How do students buy their meal? After selecting their meals, students pay for their food by having their fi ngerprint scanned or inputting their pin number at the restaurant checkout. They can check their balances at the checkout to avoid running out of money. If buying a lunch will make a student overdrawn, they can still have their meal on that day only but they must bring cash the next day to top up their account or a packed lunch.

How much is a meal at the Academy?A standard hot two-course meal costs approximately £2.15. However there is no fi xed fee for one meal and students can spend more or less than that fi gure and they will soon get used to managing their balances wisely.

SCHOOL MEALS

THE SOWER & HARVESTER RESTAURANTS

HEALTHY & SAFE A “CASHLESS” SYSTEM

Trinity Academy has two excellent self-service restaurants called The Sower and The Harvester. Both restaurants seat 200 people and have been designed with relaxation in mind, providing a calm environment in which students can enjoy their lunch. The Sower and The Harvester restaurants both conjure up images of agriculture and farming which refl ects our emphasis on fresh, wholesome food and healthy living. We thought of good school dinners before Jamie Oliver did!The meals served in both restaurants are of a very high standard. Our restaurant has built an outstanding reputation for delivering high quality food at competitive prices.

LUNCHTIME ARRANGEMENTS

7

There are three ways of arranging payment:

Free School Meals AllowanceIf your child is currently receiving free school meals at their primary school, then they will continue to do so at Trinity Academy providing your circumstances have not changed. If your child is new to the school or if you think you might be entitled to free school meals please see the information given below.

Direct DebitPlease complete the Direct Debit Form so that payments come straight from your bank account into your child’s own Academy meal account.

Cash/ChequeStudents can pay cash into their accounts every day using their lunch break before they go into the restaurant. There are three cash machines in the reception area, and once the student’s cash has been paid in, their account is immediately updated. Alternatively parents can pay by cheque made out to “Trinity Academy” in an envelope marked with the child’s name, tutor group and personal ID number. Any such money must be paid in before school starts at 8:30am or else we cannot guarantee to have the money in their account in time for lunch that same day. Similarly, students who bring packed lunches can deposit small amounts of money (cash or cheques) into their accounts to buy anything extra from the restaurants.

Peace of mind - You know that your money is being spent on lunch and not on other things.• It is one less thing to remember and you will not have to give your child cash every week.• It is more convenient than having to make sure that you always have cash. We also offer a choice of payment dates to help • you choose a date in the month that suits you best.It is safer as it reduces the need for your child to carry amounts of money in their pockets.• You can track what your child is eating. Details of every credit and purchase are recorded on our computerized system, • thus helping you if you are concerned to know what they buy each day.Your child learns how to manage money by using a system which introduces them to the skills of handling accounts • properly in a real everyday situation.

If your children are under 19 and in full-time education, you may be able to get free school meals for them. You can get free school meals for your children if:

You or your partner get Income Support or income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance;• You or your partner get the Guarantee part of State Pension Credit;• You or your partner get Child Tax Credit but do not get Working Tax Credit and the • Inland Revenue have worked out your income is less than £16,190 a year. (We will need to see your latest Child Tax Credit award letter (TC602) from the Inland Revenue). You or your partner receive support under part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.•

If you think you may be entitled to free school meals you should fi ll in an application form and send it to DMBC straight away. You should carry on paying for your children’s school meals until you hear from them. If you are entitled to free school meals, they will write and tell you the date you are entitled from. If you have paid for any meals after this date, they will send you a refund form to claim the money back. Application forms can be obtained from the Academy or from the DMBC website. When completed they should be posted to: Housing Benefi t and Council Tax Benefi t Section, PO Box 494, Colonnades House, Duke Street, Doncaster, DN1 1XG. After the fantastic success of ‘Joseph’, ‘Oliver’, ‘The Wiz’, ‘Annie’, ‘Bugsy’ and ‘Big’ over the last six years, we are already planning our 2012/13 production. Many students from our feeder schools have had the chance to come and see these productions, and of course this time you could be in it rather than watching it. Watch this space to fi nd out what musical we will be performing next.

Auditions will be happening in the fi rst half term, so listen out for announcements and come along. Who knows, you could be our next star!!!

ANNUAL PRODUCTION

10

All Trinity students and staff are placed in one of the three Houses, and the staff in your House will do everything they can to help you enjoy the camaraderie, activities and competitions in the hope that, at the end of the year, your House will have won the most points and will be awarded the House Cup.

Inter-House activities will include competitions in sports, games, speech and drama, arts, music and class work. Each House is led by one of the Vice Principals and has its own House Manager, House Captains, Prefects and a notice board to publicise the interests and achievements of its House members. Each term we have special House assemblies for presenting awards and encouraging every member of the House to do their best, as well as practising our cheers!

In case you are wondering, the Houses are named in honour of David, one of the main characters in the Old Testament. As a boy he was a Shepherd (and killed Goliath) and a Poet who wrote lots of songs that are now called the Psalms. When he was older he became the fi rst King of Israel and was known as a man after God’s heart.
