Network Meetings for Wellbeing "At Korowal School we have developed a systemic response to Wellbeing matters for our student community. This way of working recognises individuals in relation to their family, peers, school, broader society and culture rather than in isolation from these relationships and contexts. We have implemented a Collaborative Network Model of care since 2019. This method implements a relational philosophy and is based on an understanding that in the end, individualism is not an adequate basis for living a good life. (Mclead, 2013). " Central to our approach are Network Meetings. These value the opportunity for all voices to be heard and included within decision making processes and has been developed out of the Open Dialogue approach. Here, the child/adolescent is at the centre of the conversation, with parents and other key figures in the child’s life also present. This may include their Year Mentor or Class Teacher, and the Wellbeing Coordinator as facilitator. Network meetings are reliant on the inherent values of the School being activated. Relationships, compassion, equity, respect, empathy, gratitude, commitment, resilience and critical thinking are our foundations. Network meetings also provide a space for key Oracy Skills to be developed in the context of Wellbeing and Emotional Intelligence. We support students to use their own voice in the context of their own lives, and to trust the processes in place. Through Network meetings we provide a response to wellbeing issues that recognises the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved in a collaborative process. The feedback to date has been positive, with parents commenting that they have heard from their children in ways that they have not previously, and that this is a unique approach in schools. The staff experience is also positive, as all voices are heard with key people participating in the same conversation. The students are supported and witness the care and concern of their family and teachers.

Oracy There are many reasons for prioritising the teaching of Oracy at Korowal. Oracy is a term coined in 1965 by Professor Andrew Wilkinson at Birmingham University to define ‘the ability to use the oral skills of speaking and listening.’ It places the importance of speaking alongside literacy and numeracy. We are committed to developing capacity in our students so that they are confident participants, capable of engaging in conversation and critical argument, while expressing themselves fluently and cohesively in any situation. The skill to listen and accommodate myriad perspectives is central to oracy. In 2021 we embark on our third year of Oracy at Korowal. As more staff become trained in our program, Oracy is being layered into all stages. We teach many of the skills through games, then exercise these skills through the expression of thoughts and ideas in pairs, small groups and whole class discussions, the presentation of projects, and in tutorials with our senior students.

6

We want our students to be informed, compassionate and discerning voices as they emerge into the adult world. In our democracy, voices for social justice and ethical practices are essential. Learning ‘to talk’ and ‘through talk’ have never been more important in developing qualities that modern workplaces depend upon.

Renaissance Reading All students from Years 7-12 are engaged in Renaissance Reading. This program is designed to assess, monitor, develop and engage students in the enjoyment of reading and interacting with texts. At the start, students sit an online assessment of their reading level. This then provides diagnostic tools for teachers to reach a clearer understanding of where the students may need support with their reading. Students then experience the program in a practical sense every day via a 20 minute period of reading books of their choosing from within their reading level range. When they finish each book they complete a short online quiz (which provides instant analytic feedback both for the student and their teachers) before they move on to another book. The Renaissance Reading period takes place between Periods 3 and 4 from Monday to Friday. Having run this for semester 2 in 2020, we have observed that the students’ ownership of this time and process, their increased enjoyment of reading, their registration of their improvement in reading and comprehension, is having a positive result.

Policies and Procedures The complete suite of School policies are available upon request at the office. A selection of student related policies are also available directly through our website. All parents and students are expected to comply with the policies of the School. Our aim is to support all students to meet these requirements. Please note that our goals are to provide a safe and secure environment for all members of the School community and that restorative practices are at the heart of our wellbeing policy. Parents/guardians will be contacted when appropriate. Physical punishment is strictly forbidden. Our manner and tone of communication may become more formal when dealing with serious complaints or issues under our Policies and Procedural guidelines. We work to ensure that all matters are dealt with according to these guidelines. We ask that families and students familiarise themselves with these policies.

The Role of Parents and Communication Our School is based upon the strength of the relationships between teachers, students and parents. These relationships are fundamental to the wellbeing of the School as they contribute to the development of a sense of community. We are all here because of the students and it is in everyone’s best interest to make the experience positive and fulfilling. We believe that good communication and active participation in School events helps to maintain a successful School community. We require that the School’s values are held closely by the parents in supporting the students and the staff.

Class Meetings There are class meetings at the beginning of each calendar year. These meetings are an extremely important vehicle for establishing and building relationships between teachers and parents, and provide a venue for the parents of a class to meet. It is essential that each child is represented at these meetings, at which class and/or subject teachers outline the teaching program for the year and provide information about any camps and excursions to be undertaken. Student welfare, the class dynamic, special qualities that the class may have or be aiming to achieve, the structure of the school and ways in which you as parents can contribute to its well-being are amongst some of the other issues that may be raised. Questions and discussions are encouraged. As a consequence of attending these meetings, relationships between teachers and parents and amongst parents are strengthened. It is our experience that parents who do not attend miss the opportunity to make a contribution concerning class-based activities and the chance to build relationships.

Contact with Class Teachers In the event of you wishing to discuss any matter with your child’s teacher/s please phone the office to make an arrangement. The teacher concerned will return your call at his/her earliest possible opportunity. Our teachers welcome the opportunity to talk with you. Teachers can also be contacted by email; please note that our standard practice is to endeavor to respond within 3 working days. Emails are appropriate for passing on information or for requesting a meeting. Conversations will not be conducted via email. Urgent matters require a phone call to the Office. Staff are not required to open emails between 4pm on Fridays and 9am on Mondays. The address is: initial of first name followed by last name then @korowal.nsw.edu.au e.g. [email protected] It is required that students, families and carers will use electronic communication respectfully.

Interviews with Teachers & School Reports Reporting to parents occurs twice yearly. This includes written reports, interviews and records of interviews. Interviews with teachers regarding your child/ren’s educational goals and progress are held in Term 2 for children in K to 6 and Terms 2 & 4 for students in years 7 to 10, and Terms 2 & 3 for Pathways students. We strongly encourage you and your child to attend these interviews.

Class Newsletters, Information, Dates for Important Events These are written by class/subject teachers as the need arises and are posted on the School's Skoolbag App. The app also emails families directly to advise of a new posting. Please check your emails regularly and let us know if you change your email address.

Skoolbag App Skoolbag App is an Application available for download on both android and Apple devices. The app allows families to keep up to date with events, important information and calendar dates through their mobile phones. The app also emails families directly to advise of a new posting. Parents can also elect to receive notifications directly to their mobile if they choose. To download the app, see the information sheet at the end of this booklet.

Opportunities to help/become involved At various times throughout the School year requests are made for help, usually via Skoolbag. These requests include:

• Needing help in the classroom, eg with reading, craft, maths groups, science • Fundraising Activities • Working Bees • This year we will have a sustainability focus • Open Day / Fair – We are looking for Open Day Coordinators to volunteer from each year group • We are currently seeking volunteers to join our:

o Garden Maintenance Group, o Bush Care Group, o Solar Energy Initiative Group

We have found that parents who become involved in these activities usually enjoy getting to know other members of the School community. Meaningful relationships are at the heart of our teaching praxis. Children learn from the examples that we as adults set in our ability and willingness to work constructively and co-operatively together. So, don’t be shy, come along and get involved! It is essential that all volunteers have a valid working with children check and have submitted their number and date of birth to the school office at least 1 week before the volunteer day.

COVID Update In 2021 we will continue to follow health advice relating to COVID-19 and some opportunities for engagement may be limited.

14

Important Information Code of Conduct Open, respectful and collaborative relationships inform all our decisions at Korowal and as such we remind all stakeholders that it is important to treat all staff, students and parents with respect. Rude or insulting behaviour, including verbal and non-verbal aggression, relational aggression, abusive, threatening, intimidating or derogatory language and physical abuse or intimidation towards any members of the School community is unacceptable. You must not use information and communication technologies, such as email, mobile phones, text or instant messaging, blogs, social media sites and other websites to engage in this type of behaviour. We acknowledge that at times there may be grievances and for this purpose we have a Complaints and Grievances Policy.

Punctuality High school classes begin at 9:15am and Primary School Morning Circles begin at 9:25am. Students are required to be punctual. Students who arrive at school after PS Morning Circle or HS Morning Meeting will be required to report to the office and sign the attendance book and receive a late note which is handed to their teacher. It is also necessary to sign the same book if a student is leaving early.

Absences Parents and Carers are required to report their child’s absence to the school office. This can be done in any number of the following methods:

• Skoolbag App: Please complete the Absence Notification Form in Skoolbag App. This will automatically send a notification to the school office.

• Email: Please send an email to [email protected] • Phone: Please call the school office on 4758 7466. • Note: Please send a written note with your child to school.

If you intend to take your child out of School for personal reasons (such as a holiday) during term time, you are required to complete an ‘Application for Exemption from Attendance at School’ form. Leave must be granted by the Principal. This is a legal requirement. If your child has been absent and we have not received an explanation, you will be sent an automated email. Unexplained absences (ie absences not explained within 7 days of the absence) need to be reported to the Federal Government when we complete the census return. Continuing absences will require communication with your child’s class teacher or year mentor. Ongoing absenteeism will require an attendance plan.

Sickness at School A sick student will be given a note by their class teacher and directed to go to the office. The student will be taken to the Recovery Room and allowed to rest for up to half an hour. If the student is not well enough to return to class after that time, the parent or caregiver will be contacted to take the student

15

home. In some instances, when a student is obviously very unwell, the parent/caregiver will be contacted immediately. Korowal School do not administer any medication including Panadol/Nurofen unless your Parent/Carer has left a supply at the school office with instructions for administration. Students are not to carry medication in their school bag, or keep it in their locker.

Food Korowal actively promotes awareness of a healthy balanced diet. Children are not permitted to bring lollies, soft drinks, gum or chocolates to School. Such items will be taken for return at the end of the day. Glass bottles are a safety hazard and not appropriate for a school environment. Please bring a water bottle. Primary school children require a water bottle and a separate food container with some raw vegetables eg carrot, celery, cucumber, capsicum to eat during the sip and crunch break. Please note that fruit and nuts are not appropriate for sip and crunch as we do not have time to wash hands and clean desks. Details of this will be discussed at the class meetings. Students have a morning tea and a lunch break. We do have students with allergies and therefore have a strict policy of not sharing food.

Clothing Korowal students do not wear a School uniform. There is, however, a dress code. Students’ clothing needs to:

• be appropriate to a school setting. Short shorts and skirts are not suitable for a school setting, midriff is to be covered, and shoulders are to be covered when outdoors.

• enable freedom of movement without constant adjustments or exposure of underwear • provide adequate cover and sun protection • not contain negative messages or images, (this includes images of skulls) • include a hat which provides protection for face, ears and necks. Beanies are acceptable on

very cold days – with UV under 3 • include closed shoes throughout the year (it is strongly recommended that primary children wear

runners) • be labelled with your child's name.

Lost Property • All unnamed, unclaimed clothing and other articles are taken to a charity bin during each school

holiday break. Please check the lost property baskets near the PS entrance doors and in the HS locker area.

Mobile Phones Mobile Phones are to be switched off on arrival at school and only turned on when leaving. In exceptional circumstances, students need to seek permission from the Deputy Principal to have their phone

16

switched on at school. A student who feels unwell or wants to go home needs to speak with their class teacher who may send them to the school office to contact their parent/carer. If a student is observed using a mobile phone for any purpose it will be kept in the front office until the end of the day. Pathways students are able to use their phones in the Pathways Common Room and in lessons with permission from the supervising teacher.

Excursions, Swimming Lessons and Carnivals Camps, excursions and carnivals are considered an integral part of the School curriculum. As such, participation is compulsory.

School Closure at Short Notice Bushfire In the event of a 'Catastrophic' warning forecast the School will be closed. Please check the Rural Fire Services website for up to date information regarding bushfires: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au We will make every effort to communicate with all families after we have complied with directions in the event of a fire at or near the School. Please take your instructions from the authorities when there are road closures etc. Please note that students will be directed to switch off mobile phones so that the networks do not become overloaded, impeding contact for emergency services.

Other adverse weather conditions, including snow As directed by emergency services. It is recommended that you check the Bureau of Meteorology website for weather information, especially snow.

Evacuation In the event that the School is directed by emergency services to evacuate the site for any reason, every effort will be made to contact families after we have complied with their directions. Please remember that at times of emergency means of communication may be hampered.

17

Collection of Students Please inform your child's teacher if you are taking your child from School during School hours. Please inform the teacher on duty if collecting your child from the playground. Students leaving before the end of the School day must be met at the Office by a parent/carer and be signed out before leaving the premises. This is an essential requirement, relating to our duty of care, especially in the event of an emergency when all children must be accounted for. If your child feels unwell, they need to tell the teacher who will, if necessary, request that a parent/carer be called. Students are not permitted to use their mobile phones during the School day. We ask that you direct your child to go to the office if they need to call you.

Turning Circle Pick Up Times: Please adhere to the following pick up times to ease congestion in our Turning Circle:

3:15pm: Primary School 3:30pm: High School

Road Safety Our turning circle becomes very congested in the afternoons, visibility is not good and small children are still learning about road safety. It is therefore imperative that you either park your car and come to pick up your child or wait in your car at the “drop off and pick up” zone for immediate collection. If you park to collect your child, please hold your child’s hand whilst walking through the traffic area. Under no circumstances are children allowed to go to parked vehicles without supervision by a carer. It is unsafe to call him/her across to you. Please do not:

• park and leave your car along the straight edge of the turning circle, near the exit or on the corner,

• park between Hall Parade and the 1st white post on the left as you drive up to the turning circle, • park or stop in the area marked for the buses, deliveries, or in the disabled parking space unless

authorised to do so, • collect students from Queens Road or from the Hall Parade street entrance to our school. • drive around to the back of the School, without authorisation, as there is a lot of pedestrian traffic

before and after school. You are reminded that all traffic notices must be obeyed. Police regularly check the speed of traffic in the School vicinity and advise that they will pursue drivers onto the School grounds if necessary.

Ability Access Parking The accessible parking is indicated by traffic signs and is clearly marked. We have students, parents and visitors who may need to use this space at any time during the day. Please leave these spaces free for those who need them.

18

Senior Students Driving to School All students who drive to school are required to park their vehicles off site. Any students receiving a lift from another student must submit a note with signed parental permission, acknowledging that parents are aware of the arrangement. This note is to be given to a Pathways Coordinator. When giving a lift to other students, the driver must be sure that the school has received signed parental permission for their passengers to travel with them.

19

Transport Information Applications for train and bus opal cards are completed online at transportnsw.info/school-students. These passes are issued free to all eligible students. Once complete online, they are posted directly to the student’s home. We have 2 buses that provide transport for students to and from their home. We prioritise younger students, travelling furthest, for seats on our school buses. Our priority is to assist students in travelling to and from home. We are unable to accommodate transport to before and after school activities such as music lessons, sport practices or games. Changes to routine require 24 hours notice by ringing the school office or sending an email to [email protected].
