Sixty-first Science Academies’ Refresher Course in ExperimentalPhysics

June 16 to July 1 2014Sponsored by Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore,

Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi,The National Academyof Sciences, India, Allahabad

in collaboration with The Department of Physics, School of Arts and Sciences,Amrita VishwaVidyapeetham, AmritapuriCampus, Kollam

ARefresher Course in Experimental Physicswill be held at theDepartment of Physics, School ofArts andSciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus, Kollam, from 16 June to 1 July 2014 forphysics faculty teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. With the aid of a low cost kit developed bythe Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, the Course aims to familiarize about twenty-five experi-ments at the B.Sc./M.Sc. level in mechanics, heat, electricity, AC circuits, dielectrics, magnetism, relaxation, phase-sensitivedetection techniques using lock-in amplifier, nonlinear dynamics, and phasetransitions.

Professor R. Srinivasan, a distinguished experimental physicist, and a Fellow of Indian Academy ofSciences, who designed these experiments for the benefit of teachers and students will be the CourseDirector. These Refresher Courses, comprising lectures, laboratory sessions and discussions, have beenhighly successful and the experiments have been included in 80 institutions including universities, autonomous colleges, and advanced scientific institutions involved in education. Over 1200 participantshave been trained and more than a hundred kits have been sold. UGC has approved two-week RefresherCourses of good standing for promotion of teachers, vide notification F3-1/2009 dated 30/06/2010.

Applications are invited from teachers with experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduatecourses in physics. The participation is limited to four southern states and preference will be given to(nearby) colleges in Kerala. The number of seatswill be about 30. Selected participantswill be providedwith course material, local hospitality, and round-trip three-tier A/C train fare by the shortest route.

Interested applicants must submit their application form, which can be downloaded from the Coursewebsite: http://www.amrita.ac.in/physics/rcep_2014_june_amrita

A copy of the application form signed by the applicant along with a recent detailed CVmust be sent bypost to the CourseCoordinator. The formmust alsobe signed and stamped by theHead of the applicant’sInstitution stating that leave will be sanctioned for attending the Course.
