Purpose To examine how participants in actual

clinical trials perceive information on payments investigators might receive from companies that is contained in real consent forms.

Hypothesis Information on payments to investigators

has a greater influence on the participants’ decision to enroll in a study than other information provided in the consent form.

Experimental Design and Methods

• focused on fees and honoraria – consulting – lecturing – service on an advisory board – any other purpose not directly related to the

reasonable costs of conducting the research

Experimental Design and Methods

• most common types of financial relationships • difficult to manage. • disclosure most widely used management technique • unclear whether disclosure provides useful information

Experimental Design and Methods • Participants recruited from three clinical trials

• included financial disclosure information

• enrolled enough participants

• provided for recontact

• enrolled both adults and minors

• NIH funded all three clinical trials

How influential is information?

• that there might be risks related to their participation in the study?

• on rights as a participant? • about the reason why the study is being done? • that study doctors received payments from a drug

company? • on the benefits?

Conclusions • Information about risks and rights have the greatest

influence on a decision whether or not to participate in a study.

• Disclosure of payments does not substantially affect most participants’ decision to enroll in a clinical trial.

• Many participants may not comprehend or understand information presented in consent forms on payments to investigators.

Conclusions • Disclosure language is not the only piece of information

in the informed consent documents that participants have problems understanding

• What participants recall from the consent process does not always reflect the real content of the informed consent document itself.

Limitations • Parent protocols were sponsored by the NIH and not a

pharmaceutical company. • Parents/guardians and actual participants were surveyed • Participants that opted not to take part in this study might

have different perceptions

Future Directions • Conduct debriefing interviews to develop a better

understanding of the informed consent process and how it relates to information provide in the informed consent document.

• Considering implementation a mandatory post-consent process comprehension evaluation procedure for all studies
