After certain congiunzioni: anziché, invece di, abbastanza da, prima di, abbastanza da, fino a, oltre a, oltre che, piuttosto che:

Invece di parlare dovresti ascoltarmi.Oltre che essere spiritoso è intelligente.Preferisco insegnare piuttosto che lavorare in ufficio.

In the meaning of “in order to” if the two sentences have the same subject (with preposition per):

Lo faccio per guadagnare i soldi.Mangio molta verdura per dimagrire.

avere da + infinito – substitutes some sentences with dovere verb (the ones that refer to the future).

Devo cambiare il mio comportamento = Ho da cambiare il mio

comportamento. (I have to change)Devi studiare = Hai da studiare. (You have to study)Devo fare molte cose = Ho da fare molte cose. (I have to do)

A noun or indefinite (niente, nessuno, qualche) + da + infinitive – it substitutes passive sentences with dovere or potere.

Devi leggere questo libro. E’ un libro da leggere. (book to be read)Niente che può essere perso. Niente da perdere. (nothing to be

lost)

A + infinito – has a functional similar to the first part of periodo ipotetico:

Se avessi tempo libero andrei in vacanza. Ad avere tempo libero andrei

in vacanza. (If I had free time…)Se devo dire la verità non ci ho pensato. A dire la verità non ci hopensato. (If I had to telle the truth…)

Infinitive can substitute the noun:

Il lavoro è noioso. Lavorare è noioso.La vita può essere difficile. Vivere può essere

difficile.Lo studio è importante. Studiare è

importante. Il fumo è periocoloso. Fumare è periocoloso.

Infinito passato

Infinito passato: avere or essere in infinitive + participio

passato (avere and essere lose the final –e and become

aver and esser). In case of verbs that conjugate with

essere the participio passato agrees with the subject.

aver fatto esser stato/a/i/eaver mangiato esser tornato/a/i/eaver comprato esser arrivato/a/i/e

Infinito passato is used when two sentences have the

same subject and one indicates the action that happened

earlier than another action (introduced by quando,

dopo che, appena, non appena). It is usually used with

preposition di, a, per or conjunction DOPO.

Mi ha chiesto scusa per aver fatto un errore.Ho detto di aver fatto la spesa.Dopo esser tornato a casa ho cucinato la

cena.

Gerundio presente

they are expressing a contemporary actions.to substitute mentre + conjugated verb:Mentre studio guardo la TV. Studiando guardo la TV.Mentre mangiavano leggevano un libro. Mangiando leggevano un

libro.

to substitute the part of periodo ipotetico that starts with “se”

Se volessi potresti aiutarmi. Volendo potresti aiutarmi.

to substitute congiunzioni anche se, benchè, sebbene, malgrado, nonostante + conjugated verb

Anche se sono stanca devo lavorare. Pur essendo stancadevo lavorare.

Gerundio passato

Gerundio passato: avere or essere in gerundiopresente + participio passato. In case of verbsthat conjugate with essere the participio

passatoagrees with the subject.

avendo fatto essendo stato/a/i/eavendo mangiato essendo tornato/a/i/eavendo comprato essendo arrivato/a/i/e

Dato che avevo finito il lavoro sono uscita. Avendo finito il lavoro sono uscita.

Siccome siamo tornati prima delle 8 ceniamo con miamadre. Essendo tornati prima delle 8 ceniamo con mia madre.
