In October 2017 three of us took part in a fundraising trek in Sumatra with the founders of Orangutan Veterinary Aid - OVAID. Trekking into thejungle of the Leuser Eco system, seeing wild orangutans, elephants, macaques, gibbons, hornbills and other wildlife, spending a night under thestars, ‘tubing’ down rivers, (basically sitting in a big inner tube and goingwhere the river took us) and visiting a successful reforestation programme.A highlight of the tour was a visit to the SOCP Centre to see first-hand howrescued orangutans start on their journey of rehabilitation. We alsodelivered over £10,000 worth of vitally needed equipment donated by oursuppliers. Thank you very much to our suppliers. If your practice have anyequipment or out of date consumables or would just like to make adonation to this worthwhile cause please contact either Michelle or Janeat J.A.K Marketing.

• October 19th-20th 2017

The journey begins! After meeting the other people on the trek we flew from Heathrowto Jakarta.

• October 21st 2017

Today we went into Jakarta to have TB x-rays as we needed these to allow us to visitthe Orangutan Centre; Nigel (from OVAID) came with us to translate! We spent therest of the day relaxing by the pool, getting to know our fellow trekkers.

• October 22nd 2017

An early flight from Jakarta to Medan, where we were picked up from Medan airportby Luci (our tour guide) and started on the 4 hour journey to the OrangutanInformation Centre’s reforestation project in Halaban. When we arrived we were metby Nyla and the inspiring team who work at this site. We walked through a palm oilplantation, which was very quiet and to the unknowing eye quite pretty, to thereclaimed forest. It wasn’t until we crossed over into the forest that we could hear allthe wildlife; this is because palm oil trees take nutrients out of the ground so nothingcan grow and therefore no food for anything to feed off. Our first introduction into staying in therainforest was ‘a basic hut’ this was aplatform 10 feet in the air with a roof overto keep us dry and railings around the sidesto stop us falling off, we did have mosquitonets and airbeds! The toilet was a porcelainhole in the floor surrounded by a woodenshack, like in “I’m a celebrity get me out ofhere”! Having shone our torches around theshack and counted 5 spiders (these werethe same diameter as a full toilet roll) we found a bush to go behind instead! Wefamiliarised ourselves with our surroundings and after dinner Nyla showed us apresentation on the incredible work they have done and continue to do uprootingillegally planted palm oil trees and replanting (by hand) over 500 hectares back toforest. That night we went to sleep to the sound of thousands of cicada singing very loudly!

• October 23rd 2017

Following an early start and breakfast we went to leave our mark on the area byplanting some trees ourselves, a very profound moment and one which we will never

forget! As we were getting ready to leave they told us they had found tiger footprintsaround the hut a couple of weeks earlier and that they had just finished rebuilding thekitchen which had been trampled by migrating elephants.Leaving Halaban, we set off on another bumpy journey to a jungle lodge inTangkahan. As we arrived, being in the rainforest, the heavens opened and we had topostpone that afternoon’s tubing down the river, instead once it stopped raining wewent for a walk by the river where we saw a water monitor lizard and a group ofmacaques who were coming down to the river to drink. During this walk Jane was thefirst person to get leeched! The jungle lodges were ‘basic’ but mostly had walls – ourbathroom was in a private garden attached to the room, the toilet was undercoverand not just a hole in the floor, but the shower was in the garden itself, this was ourfirst experience of a cold shower.

• October 24th 2017

We took a short walk to the elephantranger’s station at Tangkahan Ecotourism, home to 7 rescued elephants. Twice a daythe elephants come to the river to bebathed by tourists, and roam free in thejungle the rest of the time. After watchingthem being bathed we walked with themback to the jungle and followed them for awhile. We left the elephants and went back to the river, from here we tubed backdown the river to the lodges; dismounting the tubes, at the end, was probably not themost elegant! Back at the lodges we were picked up by jeeps and taken to the EcoLodge in Bukit Lawang. Cars normally avoid these roads now as they have beenchewed up so badly by the palm oil lorries. We stopped off, on the way, to see theview of one of the many palm oil plantations; it stretched for as far as the eye couldsee in every direction, this was once part of the rainforest full of life, now thechemicals pumped into the land stop any wildlife living there. The Eco Lodge was amazing! The rooms were nice and clean and we had hotshowers! The restaurant is constructed from natural and sustainable bamboo and clayand all the proceeds go to helping orangutans.

• October 25th 2017

Today we started our trek into the Leuser Eco System with our guides Silo and Sabar. As we entered the rainforest we saw a group of thomas leaf monkeys, they seemed asinterested in us as we were in them and came over to watch us. Deeper into the forestSilo pointed at an orangutan in the distance, you could just make it out to be a motherand her baby, another highlight of our time there, to see orangutans in their naturalenvironment; like the thomas leaf monkeys they were curious to see what we weredoing and came over to us, we watched each other for ages, unfortunately we had toleave as we needed to get to camp before dark. Lunch was the best picnic we haveever eaten which consisted of Nasi Goreng (fried rice) served on a banana leaf andfruit, beautifully presented. On the way into camp we saw white handed gibbonsswinging in the tops of the trees, these usually shy apes swung right over the top of us,there were 3 adults and a baby. Finally after 8 hours trekking we got to camp which was by a river, the first thing wedid was jump in to cool down. As we got out of the water a long snake swam past us.That evening the guides cooked us a lovely meal in the most basic kitchen we hadever seen, in fact all the facilities were very basic (the toilet was a hole dug in theground). We sat by the river playing games, these were really simple games but oneof the best night’s entertainment we haveever had. Our beds were inner tents hung inside ahomemade tent (tarpaulin draped overwood), as we went to bed the heavensopened once again with thunder, lightningand torrential rain, the guides spent most ofthe night watching the swelling river in caseit came up to the tents.

• October 26th 2017

We set off early on our walk back down to the river; the guides showed us manythings on the way including scorpions, chameleons, flying lizards, giant ants and moreorangutans. At one point we were walking on a ridge with drops to both sides, ouronly way forward was over a fallen tree, sat on the end of the tree was a large maleorangutan, we were told to pass him one at a time. He sat on the end of the tree withhis head rested on his arm and watched every one of us cross. After we passed heclimbed onto some nearby vines and did some acrobatics for us, then a female cameover and we were told we should leave as he might become protective of her. Thetrek down to the river was steep and tiring, once there we ‘tubed’ back down the riverover rapids to the Eco Lodge where we stayed again overnight.

Thanks for visiting us at The London Vet Show!

Whilst at The London Vet Show we were lucky enough to meet Salem from ICBP International Centrefor Birds of Prey & his handler. Salem's visit was to help boost awareness and fund-raising for WildlifeVets International's #Vets4Vultures campaign.

For more information see their website: www.wildlifevetsinternational.org

You may have noticed that we updated our company logo earlier this year and as such we have incorporated this in our exhibition stands, hopefullygiving a cleaner and clearer look to our stand. What do you think to the new look?

Once again The London Vet Show, was a great congress enabling us to meet so many of our existing customer and also new ones, supported by manygreat lecture streams. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support and look forward to seeing everyone throughout 2018!

• October 27th 2017

After breakfast we set off to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme(SOCP) centre where we met Ian Singleton, head of the centre, he took us to see theOrangutan Haven which is a new project still under development. Some orangutanbeing cared for at the SOCP Quarantine Centre cannot be released into the wild forhealth or social reasons, at the Haven they will be able to live out their days in optimalwelfare conditions on large naturalistic islands. Here they will serve as naturalambassadors for their wild counterparts as the plan is to bring visitors to the Havenand for them to learn more about the SOCP’s work. From there we went to the centreitself, we saw the orangutans which were being prepared for eventual release, wealso visited the ‘Forest School’ to see the baby orangutans learning to climb trees andsocialise with each other, this helps the babies learn species-typical behaviours andprovides enrichment. Our last night in Sumatra was spent at the Deli River Hotelwhere we had a farewell dinner.

Infection control is a

focus in the profession at present. J.A.K are proud to

support the BVNA, ONCORE and Bella Moss in their

aims to provide education to deliver high standards of

infection control.

Antibiotic Awareness week was held in November with a focusto reach out across paraprofessionals. Antibiotic resistance andsuper bugs are threatening the ability to treat common illnessesand there has been a recent focus to also educate the publicmore on the topic. High standards of hygiene are essential (nowmore than ever) and pathogens need to be managed efficientlyif we are to provide clients with the confidence that their pets arein safe hands.

Whilst there are several factors than can affect infection rates, there has to be a real focus on cleaning and disinfectionmethods. It’s important to recognise that although a surface canappear clean, it may actually be contaminated with numerouspathogens. Effective cleaning must be conducted to removeorganic matter followed by the correct use of an appropriatedisinfectant to reduce the opportunity for outbreaks.

Disinfectants vary with their spectrum of activity, modes of actionand efficacy. Selection of an appropriate disinfectant will bebased on the needs of the practice and the potential pathogens, and this will vary depending on the species seen and potentialrisks. The level of risk presented by patients, equipment and theenvironment must be evaluated and appropriate cleaning anddisinfection protocols should be in place for specific areas of thepractice. Consideration should be given to the use and rotationof two different disinfectants. Each should have a different modeof activity to reduce the possibility of resistant strains of micro-organisms developing.

To ensure good standards of hygiene are upheld there should besome form of ongoing monitoring. This could be undertaken by

a dedicated member of staff that conducts regular audit checks. This may be simple checks such as has the disinfectant beendiluted correctly? Is disinfectant being applied for the correctcontact time? Is the equipment being used to clean, clean? Iseverybody cleaning to the same standards?

Additionally microbiological contamination testing can beconducted. The Dipslide test kit is designed to measure andmonitor microbiological contamination on practice surfaces. Itincludes five, double sided, agar – coated, plastic paddleswhich can be easily applied to a surface in the practice. Theyare then sent to the laboratory and a report is received withinthree working days. The report details; total viable bacteriacounts, levels of coliform and presence of yeast or fungiproviding a clear indication of whether protocols are effective orrequire and evaluation of protocols.

In Summary, it is essential that good hygiene and disinfectionprocedures are in place and that staff are familiar with therelevant policies. A greater emphasis perhaps needs to beplaced on educating (and refreshing) all members of the team ofthe importance of infection control? Compliance is key, but notalways that easy to implement. Why not nominate someone inyour team to take on the challenge of being the dedicatedInfection Control person?
