SPIRIT“That good thing which was committed to you,

keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us”(2 Tim. 1:14)

All verses are from the New King James Version unless noted.

Holy Spirit

• no importance or value can be found in any religion that is not guided and upheld by the Holy Spirit• “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,

And uphold me by Your generous Spirit” (Ps. 51:12)

OUR SUBJECTTODAY

3 BIBLICAL WAYS OF “RECEIVING THE SPIRIT”

1) HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM• ONLY OCCURRED TWICE IN HISTORY

(ACTS 2; 10)• TODAY THERE IS ONLY “ONE

BAPTISM”—WATER (EPH. 4:5; 5:26; ACTS 19:1-5; 10:47, 48)

2) LAYING ON OF THE APOSTLES HANDS (ACTS 8:18; 19:6)

• NO APOSTLES TODAY

3) THE INDWELLING

THE INDWELLING OF THE SPIRIT

• Is it something to be shrouded in mystery?

• Is it something that miraculously happens to someone?

• Is it something that takes control over our bodies?

• If our lives are not enveloped in a flood of emotions, does it mean that we don’t have the spirit dwelling in us???

COMPARE

1.GOD DWELLS IN US“. . . For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people’”

(2 COR. 6:16)

1.GOD DWELLS IN US“No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us”

(1 JN. 4:12)

2.CHRIST DWELLS IN US

“To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory”

2.CHRIST DWELLS IN US

(EPH. 3:17)

WHEN ONE KICKS AT THE WORD,

WALKS DISORDERLY,

NEGLECTS THE WORSHIP

ASSEMBLIES, ENGAGES IN SINFUL

ACTIVITIES, DEMOTES JESUS, THEN NEITHER

CHRIST NOR THE FATHER, NOR THE SPIRIT DWELL IN HIM! (HEB. 3:12)

4.CHRISTIAN DWELLS IN GOD

“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him”(1 JN. 4:15, 16)

5.CHRISTIAN DWELLS IN CHRIST

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered…” (JN. 15:5, 6)

RECEIVING THE SPIRIT

• THROUGH HEARING• “This only I want to learn from you: Did

you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?” (GAL. 3:2)• “So then faith comes by hearing, and

hearing by the word of God” (ROM. 10:17)

CANNOT SEPARATE OUR RECEPTION OF THE SPIRIT FROM RECEIVING THE REVEALED WORD

OF THE SPIRIT

RECEIVING THE SPIRIT

• THROUGH OBEDIENCE• “And we are His witnesses to these things,

and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him” (ACTS 5:32)

CANNOT SEPARATE OUR RECEPTION OF THE SPIRIT FROM ‘OBEYING’ THE REVEALED WORD

OF THE SPIRIT

RECEIVING THE SPIRIT

WHEN

WE “HEAR” AND “OBEY,” GOD SENDS FORTH HIS SPIRIT INTO OUR HEARTS!

“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’”

GALATIANS 4:6

IS THE SPIRIT IN YOUR HEART?

• DO YOU HEAR THE WORD OR THE WORLD?

• WILL YOU OBEY THE WORD OR THE WORLD TODAY?

• THE SPIRIT PLEADS FOR YOU TO OBEY TODAY!

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (ROM. 8:14)

For as many as are led by the Spirit of

God, these are For you are all

through faith in Christ Jesus.

For as many of you as were baptized

into Christ have put on Christ.

“SONS OF GOD”

ROMANS 8:14 GALATIANS3:26, 27

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”

MATTHEW 28:19

What baptism is commanded for all the nations?

Water Baptism

• Acts 8:35, 3635 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.

36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?"

NOT Holy Spirit Baptism

• Acts 8:12, 1312 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

13 Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done.

What Type of Baptism? Holy Spirit or Water?

NOT Holy Spirit Baptism

ACTS 8:14-1914 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them,

15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.

16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,

19 saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit."

“In The Name Of The Lord Jesus”

• Note carefully that:• Baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus is not

Holy Spirit baptism• Simon did not receive Holy Spirit baptism nor the

power of the Spirit through the laying on of hands• If he was baptized with the Spirit, he would not have

had to ask for the power of the Spirit• If the apostles had baptized Simon with the Spirit, he

would not have had to ask…• If the apostles had laid their hands on Simon to impart

the Holy Spirit, he would not have asked…• Hence, in any case, Simon was saved by Jesus’

name in water baptism though he did not experience Holy Spirit Baptism!

These Propositions Are Therefore TRUE!

• Proposition 1: “The Holy Spirit teaches through the Scriptures that baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus requires immersion with water”

• Proposition 2: “The Holy Spirit teaches through the Scriptures that water baptism in the name of the Lord is for salvation to the repentant believer”

These Propositions Are FALSE

• Proposition 1: “The Scriptures teach that the alien sinner is saved by grace through faith alone, before and without water baptism.”

• Proposition 2: “The Scriptures teach that requiring water baptism as a step of saving faith is blasphemy to the gospel.”

• Proposition 3: “The Scriptures teach that Holy Spirit baptism occurs at the moment of faith and is required for salvation”
