WettabilityThe wettability of a solid by a given liquid is cha-racterized by the contact angle of a drop of li-quid deposited on a solid. The best possible wettability is necessary to

Anti-friction coatingsAnti-friction coatings provide lubrication that is dry, clean and not affected by dust, contaminants or moisture (lifelong lubrica-tion in most cases).

• Surface tension is inverse to temperature and pressure, hence their favorable action.

Thanks to their low surface tension, Krytox® lubricants can wet all metal and plastics surfaces, including polypropylene and polyethylene.

PFPE oils can be thinned with fluorinated sol-vents to allow them to be deposited in much thinner layers. This opens up a wide range of cost-efficient industrial process solutions (dip

NVHNVH stands for Noise, Vibration and Harsh-ness, where noise is an unpleasant or unwanted sound created by vibrating objects, vibrations are repetitive motions at a given fre-quency regardless of direction, and harshness

Automotive noise can be divided into two main categories:- Noise caused by contact between metal parts. - Noise caused by contact between parts made of different materials (plastic, elastomer, leather, wood, metal, etc.).Lubrication is known and recognized as a means to eliminate noise.

• Engine and suspension noise is not discussed in this brochure (metal-on-metal contact). Through its partners, Dow Corning (Molykote©) and DuPont (KryTox©), Samaro carries a complete range of solutions for all these applications. Their technical sophistication and high quality have won over automotive OEM engineers in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Samaro can guide you in selecting its partners' special lubri-cants.Noise from friction between dissimilar materials usually occurs in vehicle interiors and some-times on vehicle exteriors. Noise in automo-tive interiors is primarily caused by friction

is what is felt following an impact. These three physical phenomena distract the senses – hearing, sight and touch, respectively – of motorists and passengers and detract from their riding comfort.

Technical advances in the auto industry have en-abled material and acoustical engineers to elimi-nate the most annoying noises to passengers.Their work is never-ending, for quieting one noise

immediately unmasks other noises that were pre-viously perceived as acceptable. This never-en-

ding improvement can be illustrated by the fol-lowing virtuous circle, which is well known in the

automotive world:

between components. Physically speaking, such noise can be divided into two main categories depending on the continuity of the movement involved: noise from mechanical instability (stick slip) and harshness noise (NVH).

Friction is the force that resists the motion (loss of energy) of surfaces sliding against each other. It can be static or kinetic and is mea-sured by the coefficient of friction (μ). Friction depends on the real contact area between a pair of surfaces and the interaction type and force. The latter makes up adhesion (tendency of mecha-nical surfaces to cling to one another), roughness and local deformation.

When friction occurs, energy is dissipated as heat energy and radiated acoustic energy (vibrations self-excited by the interaction of both solids), or friction noise. Eliminating friction noise requires eliminating the friction between a pair of surfaces. This is done by either reducing the adhesion of the

surfaces or by minimizing the influence of surface roughness. To some extent, this comes down to changing the coefficient of friction of the pair of sur-faces. There are three ways to achieve this:

• By changing the materials used, which would in-volve rethinking their design. • By changing the surface quality of materials, which would involve re-engineering the manufacturing processes used. • By adding a lubricating interface between contac-ting surfaces. A second type of noise is pos-sible when contacting parts are exposed to vibrations and create noise through repeated shocks.

Called "shock-associated noise", it is caused by normal, random contact between parts from impacts. Shock-associated noise is the radia-tion arising from the sudden acceleration of rigid bodies, followed by radiation from the structures. The key parameters to take into account to solve this problem are speed of impact, force of impact and contact surface. Our products counteract this by adding a shock-absorbing interface.

This brochure presents the technical solutions to NVH offered by Samaro through its partners.
