4 - Individualised treatment plans advocated in paediatric asthma Increases in the incidence of asthma and asthma-related deaths have prompted the Canadian Paediatric Society to attempt to aid physicians in the treatment of paediatric asthma. They consider that all children with asthma should receive an individualised, written treatment plan encouraging self-management. Inhaled corticosteroids (initially with a trial of sodium cromoglycate [cromolyn sodium]) are advocated for children using inhaled beta agonist therapy more than twice-daily. Doses should be as low as possible with beta agonists reserveq for 'breakthrough' wheeze and oral corticosteroid therapy reserved for intermittent, short term use in children with severe asthma.
