The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or reunite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

The concepts and practices of Yoga originated in India about several thousand years ago. Its founders were great Saints and Sages. Yoga today, is no longer restricted to hermits, saints, and sages; it has entered into our everyday lives and has aroused a worldwide awakening and acceptance in the last few decades.

Yoga is one of the six systems of

Vedic philosophy. Maharishi

Patanjali, rightly called "The

Father of Yoga" compiled and

refined various aspects of Yoga

systematically in his "Yoga

Sutras" (aphorisms). He advo-

cated the eight folds path of

Yoga, popularly known as

"Ashtanga Yoga" for all-round

development of human beings.

They are:- Yama, Niyama,

Asana, Pranayama, Pratyaha-

ra, Dharana, Dhyana and

Samadhi. The practice of Yoga

prevents psychosomatic disor-

ders and improves an individu-

al’s resistance and ability to

endure stressful situations.

The Ministry of AYUSH was

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Resolution on 11 December 2014 to declare 21 June, the International Day of Yoga. The draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states. The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly on 27 September 2014. He stated:

“Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and ac-tion; restraint and fulfill-ment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exer-cise but to discover the sense of oneness with your-self, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating con-sciousness, it can help in well being. Let us work towards adopting an Inter-national Yoga Day.”

— Narendra Modi,
