Dear Attendees, While I’m disappointed that I am unable to join you today, I’m truly pleased by your participation in this important event. The key to so much of our success in the years ahead, both here in Indiana and across the country, rests in our promotion of the life sciences. To compete in tomorrow’s economy, Hoosiers must be well-versed in science, technology, engineering, and math-ematics. These fields are the points of entry to tomorrow’s jobs. So, as you gather here today in Bloomington, you are not just crowning a new Top Young Scientist, you are also do-ing your part to demonstrate our state’s dedication to STEM curriculum and, in the process, place Indiana, and America, on a stronger footing for the future. Sincerely, Mitch Daniels

SAVE THE DATE On October 8, 2011 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, The Sci-ence Education Foundation in collaboration with the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers and the Indiana Academy of Sci-ence will be hosting an event to Celebrate Science in Indiana

The Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, Inc. was organized in 1969 to promote science education and the interchange between Indiana’s science teachers. This is accomplished through the publi-cation of a journal, a newsletter and a nationally recognized state-wide science education conference. The association has national resources available by being a chapter of the National Science Teachers Association.

Founded in 1965, the Science Education Foundation of Indiana has provided opportunities for teachers and students to partici-pate in regional and state science fairs in addition to providing travel expenses to attend the Intel International Science and Engi-neering Fair.

The Indiana Academy of Science has been an important voice of Indiana science since its inception in 1885. It continues to enjoy a high professional stature with a membership that includes many of the states’ premier scientists and science educators. The Academy provides an extraordinary opportunity for Indiana scientists and science educators to advance and share field and laboratory science research, participate in both constituent and interdisciplinary dis-course, and further the opportunity for professional growth and development.

Scholarships

The Science Education Foundation of Indiana began a scholarship program in 1980 to “encourage and assist young people to become scientists and engineers and to practice their professions in Indi-ana.” This year the Foundation will award three scholarships to be applied to the first year of college tuition. With the understanding of the selected college or university, the SEFI scholarship will not reduce any scholarships or awards that are also given to the stu-dent. Theses scholarships are for one year and are not renewable. In addition the teacher of the students selected for one of the scholarships shall be the named recipient of a grant in the amount of $300 to be used to further science research in their school.

The following criteria are used in selecting the student winners:

Student is a top award winner or alternate winner in a

2011 regional science and engineering fair who has been

invited to exhibit at the state fair.

Student must be a resident of Indiana.

Student will graduate from high school during the current

semester.

Student must complete an application and be inter-

viewed by the Foundation Scholarship Committee while

attending the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair.

Student plans to attend an accredited Indiana college or

university and provides proof of admission to the Execu-

tive Director of the Foundation by July 1.

Student provides evidence of cumulative GPA of 3.0 or the equivalent, teacher letter of recommendation and personal statement regarding the value of the science fair experience.

Student must indicate the pursuit of a degree in, or close-ly related to a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering Mathematics) discipline.

Joe B. Weaver Scholarship The judging criteria for this award select the most outstanding student within the total applicant pool. The student is designat-ed the Joe B. Weaver scholar, the highest award bestowed by the Foundation. The award consists of a $6,000 scholarship and a plaque given to the student for their school. Mr. Joe B. Weaver was a faithful devoted SEFI board member during the formative years of the Foundation and the development of the state sci-ence fair system. His surviving wife has been very generous in supporting this scholarship. The Foundation is honored to pre-sent this award each year.

John and Janet Davis Scholarship This scholarship is named for Mr. and Mrs. John Davis. The cou-ple worked with science fairs for many years and were responsi-ble for the inception of the state regional network. A former sci-ence teacher and leader for numerous educational organizations, Mr. Davis is the Executive Director Emeritus of the Foundation. Mr. Davis has also served as science fair director in South Bend, Indiana, and was responsible for organizing the Indiana Science and Engineering Fair. Mrs. Davis was his partner for directing the state event. The scholarship awards $6,000 to the student.

Dr. Leslie A. Willig Founders Scholarship This scholarship is named after the late Dr. Leslie A. Willig, one of the co-founders of the Science Education Foundation of Indiana. Dr. Willig was a pioneer in the science fair program in Indiana, which is organized into regional science fairs offering 12 major events for students to display their research exhibits. Dr. Willig was an outstanding educator, business leader, and professional. The scholarship awards $6,000 for the first year tuition and fees.
