Happy New Year
Laura [email protected]
EvEryonE Knows that thE nEw yEar starts January 1—if you go by what the calendar tells you.
In my mind, the new year actually begins sometime in March. there’s no exact date, and it’s not ushered in with a rowdy sequin-and-champagne–filled celebration. Instead, the new year kicks off when you can sense that
winter mercifully, finally is over. when lazy days on the deck, drives with the windows down, and saturday trips to the farmers market are soon-to-be realities instead of far-off cruel teases. and when I pack away the heavy sweaters and hang up the snow shovel. Good riddance.
spring may have arrived later than normal this year, but my “new year” is finally here. this is the season when I feel most inspired to make some changes, especially when it comes to the home.
If you’re also in the mood to switch things up, inside this magazine you’ll find plenty of inspi-ration and ideas for spaces both inside and out.
In “old world retreat” (page 64) we show you a colorful southern Indi-ana home that conjures up a sun-soaked Central american villa. on the flipside, the contemporary space featured in “Modern appeal” (page 72) sports a mostly neutral—but never boring—color scheme, not to mention a great outdoor space I wouldn’t mind calling my own.
speaking of which, if your yard could use some help, on page 80 local landscaping pros share the most popular features in al fresco living. with such tricked-out amenities as misting systems and pizza ovens available, you may never go inside.
and if you want—or really desperately need—better windows, updated countertops, a non-sagging sofa, or advice on how to decorate your living room, turn to page 87 for dozens of local home businesses and profession-als ready to lend their expertise to make your space the best it can be.
we hope you enjoy this issue of Indianapolis Monthly Home. you’re part of an exclusive group who has received it as a special addition to your regular subscription.
so happy new year—no matter when and how you celebrate its arrival.

The napkin’s job is far from glamor-ous. Yet elegant cloth versions kept in place by sparkling Swarovski-encrusted rings seem to elevate the napkin’s status to more of a center-piece than a bland necessity. ChoosE thE right Color wisEly, and your room Can
look modern and fresh. But take a bad spin on the color wheel, and you
may find yourself starting the process all over again.
Quit guessing. we asked local designers to share their favorite hues and
hints for adding them to your home.
Going graygray is the new go-to hue for interior
designers. the versatile color changes shades depending on lighting and the colors that surround it. nikki sutton, principal and owner of level interior architecture + design, gravitates to a cool-er gray hue. Jill st. Claire, project designer at mitsch design, likes to pair a warmer gray with whites and caramels.
“gray has become what chocolate brown was 10 years ago,” st. Claire says.
not a gray type? lu olp, senior interior
with upholstery fabric, draperies, pillows, or rugs. in a bedroom, she might add gossamer blue for a nantucket flavor.
st. Claire creates an urban feel with chartreuse and violet accents. sue Ellen Jourdan, an interior designer with luxe home interiors, says vibrant orange is squeezing its way onto the scene. she likes to use it in pottery, pillows, or throws.
“tangerine orange is a color that’s become very popular because it really warms the space,” she says.
sutton likes pale green, teal, and aqua. But her favorite color right now is white—bright, stark white to contrast with furni-ture and accessories. she might pick up quirky secondhand pieces and paint them white, like the amber-gold owl figurines she repurposed for a client.
“i feel like white rooms set off the design of the furnishings and let them be the contrast,” she says.
use those accent colors wisely, olp says. too many together will create a clash.
“Every piece in the room doesn’t have to be a ‘lead singer,’” she says. “you need a backup band.” n
designer with kittle’s design studio, still loves beige and off-white.
“they’re always in style,” she says. “you can add any accent color and make them flexible forever.”
Accent marksPunctuate those neutral tones with
vivid accents, or calm a room with sooth-ing watercolors. Julie Boutilier, owner of Cornerstone interiors, reaches for earthy colors like oatmeal and brown and then adds a pop of rich chestnut or apricot
Soft orange, in the form of a vase, fabric, or paint colors from Luxe Home Interiors, warms up a room.

Wallpaper’s back, and it’s not the stuff that left perma-
nent marks on the walls, the decor you vowed never to use again. newer
versions are removable and reusable. and instead of froufrou florals, today’s
styles lean toward oversized designs, geometric prints, and textures such as
grasscloth or linen.
“i think people are getting tired of just paint because that’s been in style for so long,” says heather martin, store manager at carmel design.
bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and baths are likely wallpaper targets. martin reports a lot of grays and neutral wallpa-per colors, with greens and citrusy yellow adding accents. navy is on its way up as well. manufacturers are even offering a non-woven wallpaper option that will come off in neat sheets rather than the little slivers that can drive homeowners to tears during the removal process.
Wallpaper can add depth and texture, whether it’s the grasscloth look mentioned above or from wall flats offered by inhabit in indianapolis. these 3/4-inch modular tiles come in 12 different patterns such as “seesaw” and “stitch.” on the wall, they create movement and depth, changing with the light and shadows.
most wall tile clients cover the whole wall and paint them to match the room, says Jennifer tuttle, who owns inhabit with her husband, mike. some will display a few tiles in an accent color for a pop of color and texture.
“i’ve seen people make headboards out of them or wall decorations where they just put a few up,” tuttle says. n
“I think people are getting tired of just paint because that’s been in style for so long.”
PaPer Pointers We asked Walter knabe, owner of Walter knabe studios, for a few ideas for using wallpaper. the artist, whose studio creates custom wallpaper in addition to carrying ready-made versions, offered these suggestions:
1. Cover only one wall. the accent wall anchors the room and adds to the story, knabe says.
2. like the print, hate the color? Most prints come in different color combi-nations that may speak to your tastes. always ask, and consider custom wallpaper designs if your favorite combo isn’t available.
3. Consider a large-scale print, no matter the size of the space. “I’ve done a lot of oversized bathrooms with oversized prints that were very dramatic and exciting and unexpected by hitting that scale in the bathroom,” knabe says.

Clean lines. Oversized designs. Warm textures. COOl
colors. local homeowners are reinventing their spaces with updated
features and furnishings. they’re adding spa elements to their master baths
and glossy colors to their cabinetry. they’re stimulating the senses with new
shades and surfaces.
“there’s a real focus on texture right now,” says interior designer marika Klemm, owner of marika designs. “i’m seeing really glossy cabinets. there’s definitely a strong trend with wood—re-claimed wood, raw wood that’s textured or distressed—and a lot of nubby fabrics.”
soft grays, browns, and whites create a versatile backdrop for almost any design. Klemm sees deeper accent colors, such as smoky blues and deep purple, pop-ping up in accessories and artwork. Julie O’Brien, interior designer and owner of Julie O’Brien design group, says bright-er, fresher colors are replacing yester-day’s yellow undertones. Bold patterns are making their own statements.
“Patterns are becoming very important again,” she says. “For a long time, patterns ceased to exist, or if they did exist, they were very traditional.”
Furniture design is leaning toward clean and crisp. lacquered wood has quietly come back in whites and grays, although the styles haven’t yet reproduced the lacquered yellows, oranges, and reds that were so popular in the ’60s. mirrored furniture is enjoying a new life in simple, streamlined designs.
“the trend is not traditional, not con-temporary, but it’s that big transitional area where you can mix those styles together,” says linda mordoh, an interior designer and owner of savvy decor. “so you might have simple lines in furniture with one antique piece thrown in.”
lucite is gaining popularity, mordoh says, with the clear material showing up on doorknobs and cabinet pulls. dining room chairs may feature lucite legs for a modern, sleek effect.
Homeowners are also harnessing the power of technology to pamper them-selves at home. to create a spa feel in their master bathrooms, they’re piping in
and doors,” O’Brien says.the women of the home are finally
carving out some space for themselves. For years, moms have been asking for study areas where they can catch up on bookkeeping while the kids do homework. Klemm recently did what she terms her first “lady cave,” a room designed with happy colors and comfortable furnishings.
“Women deserve a retreat also,” she says. n
music and choosing showers that create moods with colors and multiple spray options, Klemm says.
adding glass to interiors continues to be popular. O’Brien sees a lot of glass light fixtures with elegant teardrop or round shapes. slumped glass, in which glass has been molded or shaped, adds texture and weight to furnishings and windows.
“they’re using slumped glass to make tabletops and replace interior windows
Designer Marika Klemm opted for blue and purple furnishings to accent this room.

GettinG older can seem like a mixed blessinG. that is,
unless someone loves you—wrinkles, sags, peeling plaster, and all.
“anyone interested in purchasing a historic home should approach the situ-
ation with their eyes wide open,” says chad lethig, indianapolis preservation
coordinator at indiana landmarks. “hiring a knowledgeable contractor to
brown says water management tops the list of inspection concerns.
“many historic houses have built-in gutter systems,” he explains. “When they leak, they create rot from the inside out, which is difficult to detect.”
lethig likes to start at the bottom and work his way up.
“moisture on basement floors and wa-ter stain marks on foundation walls will
provide estimates will help buyers identify renovation costs and negotiate an offer on a house.”
scott brown, owner of brown remod-eling, agrees.
“[specialists] know what to look for and how to advise people in dealing with the issues found in 150-year-old houses.”
Here are some things to keep in mind with older homes:

usually necessitate drainage work around the foundation,” he says.
basements can reveal other problems. “it’s common for entire floor joists to
be cut out to accommodate duct work for modern air-conditioning systems or to run additional plumbing,” brown says. “over time, floors sag, door frames shift, and walls crack. those essential parts must be replaced to ensure the integrity of the home.”
outdated electrical systems can pose serious dangers.
“the old knob-and-tube wiring in older homes is rarely problematic,” lethig explains. “Problems result from improper splices and alterations. Plus, today’s home-owner requires a much heavier electrical load, so budgeting for a complete electri-cal replacement makes sense.”
living up to today’s environmen-tal standards can be a challenge for an older house.
“in most cases, we need to drill holes in either interior or exterior walls to install insulation,” brown says. “Plaster walls are designed to breathe, so it is important to know what type of product will prevent moisture buildup.”
by law, lead-based paint, common in older homes, will require handling by a specialist.
Veteran homes are eccentric by nature and, at times, a bit cranky, but lethig in-sists the benefits far outweigh the trouble.
“older homes do possess some inter-esting quirks and funky squeaks, but when i walk across a floor and it talks back to me, i consider that to be one of the richest experiences i can have as a homeowner.”
renovating a historic home is preserv-ing a piece of history, brown says.
“the quality of material used in histor-ic homes is far superior to anything being used today,” he says. “if well maintained, they can last a hundred more years.” n

“If you have a good plan and a good understanding of the bid, then every-thing else goes a lot smoother,” says Brad Bowman, owner of Homes by Design.
Ask for references and work samples to gauge the quality of their work and to ensure they specialize in projects the same type and scope of yours. It’s also important to feel comfortable with your renovator.
“When you are remodeling, you are inviting a lot of people into your house,” says Steve Gray, owner of Steve Gray Renovations. “Keep interviewing until you find someone you can trust.”
Make final decisions on materials and products as soon as possible. It can take several months for some items to be delivered, Bowman points out, and you want to avoid unscheduled interruptions once work begins.
Have realistic expectations. If you’ll be living in your home during the re-model, discuss what that will mean for everyone involved. What time does the remodeler typically begin? Will you have time to get the kids off to school? Timing must be carefully coordinated so disrup-tions to your family are minimized while allowing the project to progress efficiently.
Be sure to address any concerns prior to the project’s start, such as how your be-longings and flowerbeds will be protected.
“Another thing that is extremely impor-tant to our clientele is cleanliness,” Gray

says. “What will your house look like each night after they leave?”
Keep the communication going dur-ing the project. According to Gray, a lack of communication at this point—the crew doesn’t show up when scheduled or your remodeler doesn’t return your phone calls—should raise a red flag that the project may not be going well.
“The happiest homeowners are the ones who are the most flexible.”
The team at Steve Gray also built a new sunroom that extends into the home’s backyard.

Be adaptable. Remodeling projects, especially in older homes, are notorious for “scope creep.” necessary fixes that weren’t covered in the bid may be revealed, and materials may not arrive when promised.
Although things may not always go according to plan, Bowman says, “the hap-piest homeowners are the ones who are the most flexible.” n

You’ll enjoy butterflies all summer long as their eggs hatch right in your backyard.

Though the exterior of this home was designed to blend in with its historic downtown-Zionsville surroundings, inside, the master bathroom proves to be a worthy mod-ern counterpart. The design started with the spacious 5-foot–by–6-foot shower, says Michele Boggs, interior designer and owner of MB Designs. A transom window helps achieve the homeowners’ wish for an open, airy feel, while a mix of travertine and glass tiles in square and rectangular shapes adds visual interest to the show-er. A free-standing tub proved to be a better fit for the overall layout and is accented with a custom stained-glass window-hanging from Fox Studios. The same shower tiles are used on the backsplash for the vanity area, which features stainless-steel fixtures and a large custom-cut mirror. To prevent unwanted clutter, every-thing from towels to hair appliances has its place in the custom-made cabinetry by Miller Maid Cabinets. Even the placement of the electrical outlets was carefully considered so that they remain mostly out of sight.

The towering brick wall, painted black for high drama, separates a formal living and dining area (above) from a hearth room (opposite, top) and adjoining kitchen and breakfast area (opposite, bottom)—but just barely. It was purposely left open on both sides so that guests would feel free to meander from room to room.
The pros at Hoskins Interior Design are strong advo-cates of a pretty laundry room. “You spend so much time in there, it ought to be beautiful,” says Kathy Hoskins, senior interior designer. “Most of our clients love that idea.” The owners of this Carmel home, which under-went a nearly total renovation, were no exception. The room’s design started with the slate floors, which are easy to maintain. “We like natural products, and slate is a great one,” Hoskins says. The room wasn’t quite big enough for an island, so the Hoskins team instead designed a movable table made by Zionsville Custom Cabinets. The chandelier, from Currey & Company, fea-tures real wooden beads—an earthy element that works nicely with the slate tiles. The colors in the wallpaper and window treatments by Thibaut Wallpaper & Fab-rics also complement the flooring, and custom cabinets above the washer and dryer add plenty of storage. The owner adores her new space. “She loves spending time in there,” Hoskins says.

When their daughter moved into a room that was once a library with dark-wood bookshelves, these homeown-ers called upon decorative artists at Blice Edwards to make the room more suitable for a little girl. Her wish? A tropical underwater mural on the walls. After draw-ing in each line with pencil, the team went to work. From start to finish, the whole project took about one week and was painted directly on the wall, as op-posed to a removable canvas, says Chris Blice, princi-pal and project manager. With seashells, tropical fish, a dolphin, and coral, the room now has the desired effect. But there’s also a 3-D element thanks to various rhinestones and pearls glued on to the wall, which glint when the light catches them. Hanging from the skylight is a light fixture composed of two salad bowls, a glass globe, and rickrack decorative trim. Created to look like a jellyfish, the makeshift accessory catches visitors’ at-tention. “Now [the homeowners] have people wanting to know where they got the light,” Blice says.

A basketball hoop in a driveway or tacked to the side of a barn is quintessentially Hoosier. In-home courts, on the other hand, are still largely an exclusive feature. Carl McIntyre, owner of Carrington Homes, estimates he’s built about a dozen such courts, including the one in this Indianapolis-area home. The owners wanted a large enough space for their grandkids to play and to host family functions. They also thought it would help increase resale value, McIntyre says. The space measures in at 35 feet by 29 feet and features a red paint scheme. Impact-resistant fluorescent lights stand up to errant high-flying toys, and a commercial-grade urethane finish protects the floor against wear and tear. Thinking of creating your own Bankers Life Fieldhouse? To avoid any technical fouls, you’ll need ample space, and ceilings of at least 17 feet are a must, McIntyre says. Sound-dampening panels to lessen echoing are also a smart choice.

Initially built for a Homes of Distinction tour, this Zionsville residence was designed to be something peo-ple hadn’t seen before. That idea extended down to the basement. The home, built by Chris Carnell and Scott Bates of Christopher Scott Homes, has a rustic look, Bates says, both inside and out. In conjunction with Zionsville-based decorative painters PJD Creations, the pair designed the 12-foot–by–6-foot wine cellar to re-flect that same style. Though the shelves look like stone, they’re actually concrete that PJD shaped, scored, and colored by hand. The bottle-holders are fashioned from cylindrical ceramic drain tile, and the ceiling is a rustic plank wood with curved track lighting. As is common with wine cellars, the space is insulated with green-board drywall and conditioned windows and doors to steady the temperature around 55 degrees. The room stores about 300 bottles, Bates says. n

in Bloomington, this secluded property evokes the feel of a 19th-century Spanish hacienda. Upon entry into the warmly lit main artery of the home, one can’t help expecting Don Quixote to burst through one of the doors on the way to his next adventure.
“We worked on this plan for over three years,” says Savvy Decor owner Linda Mordoh, allied ASID. “The homeowners were very specific about what they wanted, and the outcome speaks for itself.”
It’s Old World style at its best. Wood, metal, and the warm palette of the Southwest dominate the home, whether in the handmade rough-hewn beams stretched across the ceiling; the colorful walls handglazed by decorative artist Gina Rosenow; or the custom-made, handforged iron banister by blacksmith Jack Brubaker.
Having scoured the Internet and design catalogs in search of the perfect items for the house, the homeowner eventually
sourced many of the light fixtures, ceramic tiles, and accent pieces from Mexico and Guatemala. Much of the furniture fea-tures the same heavy-wood feel of the doors with embedded nails.
“We really wanted a lot of details that would reflect the Spanish look we wanted to achieve,” the homeowner says. Those include selections from Pittsburgh Paints’ Hacienda Style Color Palette on the walls; multicolored tiles from online retailer Tierra y Fuego; and artwork by painter Simon Silva, who is from the same Southern California hometown as the homeowner’s husband.
The kitchen is truly the heart of the home. Family dinners are a very special part of the day, and on any given night, the owners and their children may gather around the massive honed-gran-ite island with large cutting board featuring built-in shelves that house a microwave, blender, and mixer. Or, they’ll meet around

the casual banquette table that boasts a view of the lake, as well as the kitchen TV.
The homeowner fell in love with a large, hand-forged light fixture from 2nd Avenue Lighting, featuring a swirled pattern on the bottom and red glass beads on the sides. It became a central part of the kitchen.
“That fixture looked like art to me, and I loved the jeweled look on the sides,” says the homeowner. “It was the first piece I picked out.”
“The kitchen is really where the design plan started,” Mordoh explains. “From there, we created this lovely upholstered eat-ing area, cabinetry, and layout that set the stage for the rest of the home.”
The homeowner also had a strong hand in choosing the
colors and designing the patterns that are featured in the tiled backsplashes in the kitchen, laundry room, and along the curved staircase. Though much of the Pittsburgh Paints’ hacienda palette includes muted colors, the pottery and tile were places she felt she could kick up the color a notch and offer something bright and shiny to complement otherwise soft hues.
The two kitchen sinks, as well as the vessel bowl in the mudroom bathroom, are hammered copper. The powder bathroom features a Talavera-style bowl sink from Mexico.
“I think that offers another one of those unique touches that we love,” the homeowner says.
Just off of the kitchen is a walk-through pantry that’s sure to be any chef ’s dream. Open to both the hallway and the kitchen, its nearly triangular shape is non-traditional but keeps the feel

of the Spanish villa alive with its antique red doors complete with wrought-iron inserts, baskets, and open shelving.
The living-room area is another warm space that’s separate from the kitchen, yet it feels accessible thanks to two large win-dows that enable conversation and connection. The living room uses many of the same heavy wooden Mexican and Guatemalan furnishing styles found in other areas of the home but also com-fortable sofas and a mix of leather and fabric textures that invite everyone to curl up and sit a spell.
“One thing we did differently in the living space is that we didn’t do window treatments,” Mordoh says. “They have no neighbors nearby, so why bother? And this way, they can really enjoy the lake, the change of the seasons, and use nature’s colors as part of their home’s design plan.”
The master suite is a sparsely decorated area with muted col-ors that inspire rest and relaxation—the only pop of color comes from a Tiffany lamp on the nightstand. The homeowner chose to stick with traditional earth tones when considering a palette for her bedroom and master bath, which includes a walk-in shower, crystal chandelier, and handpainted cabinetry.
Though the homeowner has dedicated nearly four years of her life to the project, it’s still a work in progress. Mordoh says she appreciates working with someone who was not afraid to use color and who cared about the craftsmanship and culture of each piece that was selected.
“She chose every element thoughtfully and didn’t rush it,” Mordoh says. “I think that made all the difference in the end result.” ■

WWith two grown children transitioning to life beyond the nest, Brian and Kelly Smith were ready to make a few changes of their own. When contemplating their Bridgewa-ter ranch, the couple not only wanted to down-size, but create a contemporary space in which to enjoy the next phase of their lives.
They worked with Homes by McKenzie to craft an open floor plan that would transition well from room to room and make use of the natural light streaming through the windows, and tapped Cynthia C. Walker—allied ASID, RID, and owner of Walker Designs—to develop an interior-design scheme. The Smiths also be-gan streamlining their possessions and choosing what would best fit the new digs.
Texture, efficiency, and architectural detailing were the dominant elements of the overall design plan. The Smiths wanted the limestone fireplace to serve as the centerpiece of the main floor, bal-anced by the 7-foot Baldwin grand piano and “command center” kitchen island that enables family and guests to gather in a single space.
“Everything was well thought-out,” says Walk-er, who notes that there are no sharp edges in the kitchen and that every curve, arch, and line was given due consideration. “Each detail was taken into account.”
In the Smith home, the ordinary becomes the extraordinary, whether it’s the geometric mixed-media chandelier above the dining-room table, the Eames chair and sectional sofa in the living room, or the slab-vessel sinks that sit atop

the counter in the master suite. In addition to the gathering areas and guest
suite on the main level, there’s also an efficient home-office space tucked behind the kitchen that allows Kelly to multitask when she needs to and close it off when she’s finished.
“We created a space behind the kitchen that did not remove her from the rest of the house,” Walker says. “For the day-to-day things, this small space is perfect for her computer and printer.”
The Smiths love to entertain—indoors and out—so the open floor plan also provides an op-portunity to segue to the outdoor patio hard-scape. Designed by both Walker and Hittle Landscaping, it includes a fountain, a fire space, an entertaining area, an outdoor TV, and a large, custom-designed buffet by RL Hahn that lets Kelly set up a food station without running back and forth.
“We really do love the entire space, but our ab-solute favorite part is the outdoor porch and patio area,” Brian says. “The fact that it flows directly from our main living area to this outside room to a beautifully landscaped private patio area, and it is equipped with great furniture, lighting, and audio/visual, makes us want to spend as much time there as possible.”
Beyond the gathering area inside is the laun-dry room and master suite. The latter is a trib-ute to minimalism and offers a sense of sanctu-ary at the end of a long day. A custom-designed, oversized padded headboard complements the bed, as well as two nightstands and a desk that belonged to Brian’s grandmother.
“While they didn’t take a lot of pieces from the old place with them, this one was very im-portant, and he wanted to make sure to find a

place for it,” Walker says. “The shimmery bench at the end of the bed has a lot of color in it, but it is still subdued and blends well with the warm grays that serve as the neutral foundation for the main floor.”
The master bathroom features a floating tub, a clear shower, a walk-in closet (complete with a charging bay for electronics), a towel warmer, chrome fixtures, and edgy, dark-metal hardware that matches the room’s two curved, contempo-rary overhead light fixtures.
“Lighting is always a big deal for me, and we certainly committed lots of time and thought and resources to the lighting design,” Brian says.
With everything clean and serene on the main floor, the Smiths opted for a pop of color and some traditional elements in their basement family room. The warm, rich colors of the area welcome guests to the secondary kitchen space and a family area perfect for impromptu get-togethers. There’s also a wine cellar just off the kitchen that can hold 500 bottles in the racks, with an additional 200 in the wine chiller. The room is sealed to preserve the collection using the basement’s natural coolness.
A lighted gallery-style wall along the basement bedroom wing creates a display for the family’s precious mementoes, including Brian’s awards and a collection of Herend bunnies from Hunga-ry that Brian has given Kelly over the years. The two bedrooms are connected via a Jack-and-Jill bath and are located across from the craft room, in which Kelly can spread out supplies to create props and other accessories for high-school show choirs. Also nearby is the utility room, which contains the works for the sound system and high-efficiency HVAC unit.
Walker says she was thrilled to be given the opportunity to work with the Smiths in order to create a functional and fashionable living space that would meet their lifestyle needs.
“Cynthia is our dear friend and had a strong sense of how we live,” Brian says. “She had a bird’s-eye view that gave her great insights. We all know and trust each other so much that it was easy to be direct about the ideas we loved and those that we didn’t—she knows us so well.” ■

No one’s forgotten last summer’s super-hot drought
conditions. So it’s no surprise that
keeping cool is among the top
requests for outdoor spaces.
“Pergolas and shade have become more pressing as the climate has be-come warmer,” says Rob Delaby, owner of Shane’s Outdoor Living & Landscaping in Fortville. He’s also installing a lot more outdoor fans this year.
Lowell Rolsky, president of Pro Care Horticultural Services in Carmel, notes an upswing in requests for misting systems, similar to the cooling stations offered at Disney parks. If they’re tied into an exist-ing irrigation system, they can be conve-niently winterized at the same time as the irrigation system.
incorporating nature
Last year’s weather has also influenced plant selections.
“Folks want us to incorporate a greater amount of drought-tolerant materials in the landscape,” Delaby says. “Flowers take a lot more water, so people are trying to get more color variation using shrubs like green velvet boxwoods and junipers or blue fescue grass. This year, it’s all been focused around the extreme variations in the climate and trying to ensure that whatever investment they’ve made will be protected.”
Water features are always in demand for their cooling effect and soothing sound.
“It doesn’t have to be something ornate or overly expensive; it can be as simple as a bubbling rock,” Rolsky says. “Water-less” fountains, which contain the water
A fun way to cool off, pools are just one water feature homeowners can request. Often more decorative than functional, fountains, such as those that contain water underground, are a popular choice for their soothing sounds.

underground, are an espe-cially good choice for families with small children or animals. There’s also less maintenance with a waterless fountain—no leaves or other debris to clean out of the basin.
fully functional kitchens and more
Hot items for the kitchen include pizza ovens, warming drawers, smokers, kegerators to keep home brews and beer on tap, and built-in blenders. Trash containers can be built into countertops and covered with a sliding cutting board for easy access.
“People are becoming more aware of the possibilities,” Rol-sky says. “Anything under the sun can be utilized outdoors.”
As homeowners are putting more money into their outdoor spaces, they want to be able to use them well into the fall. Built-in heating elements can accomplish that. There’s also the ever-popular fireplace and fire pit, bowl, or table to create a comfy gathering space during the cooler months. Try adding interest in a gathering area with a metal or multimedia sculpture.
Rustic, natural stone is the material of choice to tie everything together, but pav-ers and aggregate concrete are also popular.
planning for the big picture
With outdoor spaces, multi-purpose is out, and designated areas—grill/kitchen, cocktail, na-ture, gathering, or game—are in. You can create a plan and carry it out in phases to get the space of your dreams. n

allison melangtonPresident of the Indiana Sports Corporation
Our home has a large, life-size painted portrait of my
husband’s great-grandfather, W.A. Kennedy of Martinsville, Indiana. Mr. Kennedy was well-known across the state for building the Martinsville Country Club. The Kennedy family also owned the prestigious Home Lawn Mineral Springs in Martinsville, where this portrait hung for many years. Mr. Kennedy’s father-in-law passed the leadership of the Home Lawn down to him in 1916. Guests from all over the world—the East Coast, Europe, and South Africa, among many others—came to enjoy the mineral springs to treat arthritis ailments. Notable guests included Phyllis Diller, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and J. Edgar Hoover. The painting has so much family history associated with it that we have chosen to display it in our home, and it is always a topic of conversation with our guests.”

Home is your favorite place. It’s Unique Home Solutions’ too..
Home is More than a House. You think of your home before
the parts of your house, like windows and siding. Unique Home Solutions does think of those parts. Unique has never installed ‘cheap’ products, because those top-quality parts add-up to a worry-free home for you, plus comfort and security. Your home has been our business for 30 years.
Why Unique has been in business for 30 years.Customers come first.Others cannot buy Unique Home
Solutions’ stock; our employees own it all. That may explain why they are most interested in customer satisfaction.
Our Famous WarrantiesWhy are they “famous”?They include materials and labor. And, they are never pro-rated. So, if you are 48 years into your 50-year roof warranty, Unique has no deduction for the 48 years that you have had your roof. Unique’s siding and windows are warranted for the life of your home in the same way.
The Economy of Quality.Ever notice that some people waste money on cheap things that constantly need replacing? Those wasted dollars could have been
spent on Unique lifetime products.
A Smart Investment? No matter what happens to the value of stock, or gold, or the dollar, your improved home will always provide you with comfort and security.

The sculptural beauty of Isamu Noguchi’s Cyclone
Table of 1953 has long inspired me and occupied many spaces in my family’s home. The simplicity with which three elements—a circular, laminated wood top; chrome-plated steel-wire cage; and a cast-iron base—are elegantly combined to form a table that serves equally well as a dining surface, bedside table, and foyer centerpiece is absolute genius. We very happily acquired this table from an auction of the furnishings of the St. Louis Cham-ber of Commerce in the mid-90s.”

If you’ve visited the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis lately, no doubt you’ve marveled at its colorful centerpiece, Dale Chihuly’s Fireworks of Glass. Now you can bring a similar look into your home with Viz Glass’s 6-foot-tall statement fixture. More than 600 pieces are secured on a cage that holds about a half-dozen LED lights with roughly a 50,000-hour lifetime, says Jeremy Konechne, manager of showrooms for Ferguson Bath, Kitchen, and Lighting Gallery (see listing, page 122). Custom creations are also available. “It’s definitely a trophy,” Konechne says. BY Laura KrutY
