INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAYStart your engines and race over to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the highest-capacity sports venue in the world. Home to the Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400, and Grand Prix of Indianapolis, this 2.5 mile racetrack is an Indianapolis icon. Take a tour of the famed track and stop by the IMS Hall of Fame Museum located within the historic oval to view their extensive collection of automobiles and artifacts.

MONUMENT CIRCLELocated in the heart of downtown, scenic Monument Circle is a lively public space that often hosts city events and festivals, and entices guests with its surrounding dining and entertainment options. If you’re feeling adventurous, ride to the top of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument to take in views of the city from its 284-foot tall observation deck.

ARTS & CULTURELive like a local and explore Indianapolis’ many eclectic neighborhoods. Stroll through historic Lockerbie Square, shop in the boutiques of Broad Ripple Village, or appreciate local artists in Fountain Square. Looking for museums? Stop by the beautiful Indianapolis Museum of Art, or bring the family to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the largest children’s museum in the world featuring five stories of interactive play.

FOODIE PARADISEBring your appetites! Indianapolis features nearly 250 restaurants all within steps of the convention center and was recently named “America’s Most Underrated Food City” by Condé Nast Traveler. Grab one of the city’s famous pork tenderloin sandwiches, enjoy a sizzling steak from St. Elmo’s Steak House, or finish the night off with a beer from one of Indy’s many award-winning breweries.

WHITE RIVER STATE PARKTake a breath of fresh air and stroll through America’s only cultural urban state park. Find your zen in the park’s green space or visit one of its cultural attractions like the Indianapolis Zoo, NCAA Hall of Champions, or Indiana State Museum. Explore the park by foot, segway, bike, or even boat!

KEYNOTE BRUNCHSATURDAY, JULY 2210:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Keynote Brunch: Insights for One Health from Centuries and Millennia Past by Paul SerenoNew developments in genetics, ancient DNA, and paleoanthropology are giving us a whole new perspective on what actually happened in past animal-human health crises like the Plague. Likewise, new fossils and human development have yielded major insights into the timing of evolutionary changes to the human body, such as upright posture, and why some of those recent changes are often points of failure.

Paul Sereno’s background is in paleontology, and his findings about the animal and plant world will engage and intrigue you by seeing how the history of the animal world relates to today. He is a Professor and National Geographic Explorer. Paul works in his Fossil Lab at the University of Chicago. His work is an exciting blend of art, history and science wrapped in adventure. He has explored the Sahara and Gobi Deserts, India’s Thar Desert and remote valleys in Tibet. Featured in National Geographic magazine stories and NOVA documentaries, Sereno was named Teacher of the Year by the Chicago Tribune.

The Keynote Brunch is open to full convention registrants, including veterinarians, technicians, practice staff, and students. Guests and exhibitors are invited to attend a Viewing Party in an alternate location.

“As a recent graduate, I have felt lost in the profession since graduating. Coming to AVMA was rejuvenating and reminded me why I love this profession and the people in it. The whole community was so open to providing mentorship and encouragement. I was inspired by the many ways the AVMA was actively seeking input from its membership and am excited to try to become involved with a volunteer position in the future.”

POULTRY MEDICINEThe American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP) holds its annual scientific and business meetings in conjunction with the AVMA Annual Convention. The AAAP Scientific Program includes an annual Symposium assembled around an important topic in avian medicine; a Keynote Lecture; a History Lecture; multiple Award Winner Lectures; almost one hundred and fifty 15-minute presentations on cutting-edge research and clinical topics spread over three days and two simultaneous sessions; and an extensive poster session.

AAAP Scientific Program Highlights

• The 2017 Symposium entitled “Poultry, Politics & Policy: What Avian Health Specialists Need to Know" sponsored by the AAAP Legislative Advisory Committee, from 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, July 22, featuring in-depth presentations by leading authorities on this important topic.

• The Keynote Address at 12:00 PM Friday, July 21, “Global Competitiveness” by Dr. Brett Stuart of Global AgriTrends. Global food demand is being driven by an additional 78 million consumers each year. Rising food demand has fueled the U.S. agriculture sector. But commodity deflation, currency volatility, and global trade issues have complicated the trade picture.

• The Lasher-Eckroade History Lecture at 11:00 AM Monday, July 24, titled “Early Poultry Vaccine Company Development; the Era of Entrepreneurs” by John Donahoe. Early events leading to the establishment of various branches of the US poultry industry and to the establishment of the animal health industry in the US will be reviewed. Focus will be on two entrepreneurial individuals not well covered by prior history articles, namely Hiram Lasher and Kenneth Eskelund.

Topics covered in scientific presentations will include:

Antibiotics in Poultry

Avian Influenza

Bacteriology

Case Reports

Coccidiosis

Diagnostic Techniques

Enteric Health

Infectious Bronchitis Virus

Immunology

Management

Mycoplasma

Parasitology

Protozoa

Reovirus

Salmonella
