In Indianapolis we have a race which has been run for over 100 years on or around the Memorial Day holiday The writer of Hebrews talks about another race He relates in Hebrews 12 New International Version (NIV) Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus the pioneer and per-fecter of faith For the joy set before him he endured the cross scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners so that you will not grow weary and lose heart Paul encourages Timothy in 2 Timothy 4 New Interna-tional Version (NIV) In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who will judge the living and the dead and in view of his ap-pearing and his kingdom I give you this charge 2 Preach the word be prepared in season and out of season correct rebuke and encouragemdashwith great patience and careful instruction 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine Instead to suit their own desires they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths 5 But you keep your head in all situations endure hardship do the work of an evangelist discharge all the duties of your ministry 6 For I am already being poured out like a drink of-fering and the time for my departure is near 7 I have fought the good fight I have finished the race I have kept the faith 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord the right-eous Judge will award to me on that daymdashand not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing Our race in life is not easy but we can rely on others encouragement and can take encourage-ment from Paulrsquos words and continue our race toward the prize of eternal life with Jesus and God Remember the meaning of Memorial Day Memo-rial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the countrys armed forces The holiday which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May will be held on May 28 2018 The holiday was held on May 30 from 1868 to 1970 From Wikipedia
