It was built in 1897 and is one of the largest and most ornate residences in Winamac, blending the Richardson Romanesque and Colonial Revival styles. Dr. Thompson served the community alongside his brother William from 1871 until his death in 1926. The property does not have a historic marker and is protected by mature trees so pictures will be restricted to curb shots from Market or Madison streets. Seth Hinshaw (1787-1865) was active on the Underground Railroad, but also operated a free labor store in Greensboro. A free labor store only sold items which were produced without the help of slave labor. Instead of cotton and sugar the store might sell wool and maple syrup. Along with this work, Hinshaw also erected “Liberty Hall,” which held the anti-slavery meetings, which Hinshaw ran. The last meeting of the abolitionists here was in 1852, but the building remained until 1880. The marker is located on the southeast corner of High & Main Streets in Greensboro. The buildings are long gone, but the memory of his actions remains.

Parking is available at a storage busi-ness located on the south side of the highway, allowing safe picture-taking access. This is the work of Andrei Kraitsou, a New York-based artist, who used spray paint to create the tow-ering murals; one of the largest art projects this area has ever seen. The localcommunity raised $34,000 for the project and the state provided a matching grant. The county is hoping to add more art projects in the future.

Medora Brick Plant8202 West CR 425 SMedora, IN 47260GPS: N 39o 7.933 W 87o 24.311 A 50-man workforce once produced 54,000 handmade bricks a day at the Medora Brick Plant. Founded in 1904 the company built initial components of a plant and began brick pro-duction with its first batch of paving bricks burned in March 1909. The B & O Rail-road tracks at the edge of the plant complex carried Medora brick to pave streets throughout theMidwest initially. The plant operated between nine and ten months out of the year produc-ing standard and custom brick until it officially closed January 31, 1992. The company had over the years built a complex of 12 brick kilns with 7 tall square stacks complimenting them. The round, domed (beehive) kilns have arched doors on two sides along with 10 small openings at their base for feeding the kiln’s fire. In 2004, the site was named to the 10 Most Endangered Landmarks list by the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana. Eleven domed kilns remain with 5 stacks (the ‘five sisters’) along with four small buildings. The plant site points to our proud industrial and local heritage with a special bow to the plant workers and their families.

The memorial and State Historic Site is open from dawn to dusk. Pigeon Roost was established in 1809 by settlers from Kentucky. It was named Pigeon Roost because of the great number of passenger pigeons in the area. This park marks the location of a village where Native Americans attacked a group of settlers on September 3, 1812. Twenty-eight people died that day, including 15 children and four Native Americans. In 1904 the state of Indiana authorized the construction of a 44 foot tall obelisk as a memorial to the families who lost their lives in the massacre.

Your picture here is just the gate, however you are welcome toride up and get a picture at the hotel at the end of West Baden Ave. There is a long story behind the names West Baden and Carlsbad and the entrance gate to the resort shows both. West Baden was named in reference to Wiesbaden, Germany and Carlsbad is a reference to Karlovy Vary, a town in the Czech Republic. Both are spa towns, Karlovy Vary or Karlsbad as the Germans called it, was founded in 1370. In 1888 an investment group called Sinclair and Rhodes acquired the West Baden hotel andthe surrounding 667 acres. It was promoted as a cosmopolitan resort. The hotel as it stands today was built in 1902 and has been witness to a number of different uses beginning as a resort for the rich and infamous until the Great Depression when it closed. The property became a Jesuit seminary, a private coeducational college and a National Historic Landmark. Although it fell into disrepair in the early 1980’s, it now shines as a wonderful reminder of the history of the area.

Pink Elephant Statue308 W Broadway St, Fortville, IN 46040GPS: N 39o 42.388 W 86o 21.239

Another fun piece of artwork and Americana is the Giant Martini-Drinking Elephant. Located in front of Elite Beverages on the south side of US 36 in Fortville is this huge pachyderm wearing glasses and drinking a martini. The sculpture stands 12 feet tall and 19 feet long and has been headquartered in front of the liquor store since the 1980s. Its glasses and the olive in itsmartini have occasionally been stolen, but townsfolk also like to add things, particularly around the holidays. The elephant has been bedecked in Christmas, Pilgrim, leprechaun, and Uncle Sam garb depending on the time of year. It has also been known to attend local parades and festivals so a call to the liquor store at 317-485-6282 might be wise if you are traveling any distance.

Bicentennial Park & State Flag Historical MarkerCorner of Main & Indiana downtown Mooresville, IN GPS: N 40o 16.548 W 85o 50.515

This is a block park located in downtown Mooresville on the north-east corner of Main St& Indiana St. The south side of the sculpture has a dull finish, while the north side view from the center of the park is highly reflective. From the west side of the sculpture, the flames really take shape and have several flags rising above it in the background. The flames sculpture was designed by Rundell Ernstberger Associates and built by local firm Linel in 2017. The town of Mooresville has moved the historic marker that tells the story of the origin of the Indiana State flag to the north end of the park near the street. A stage was added so the park might be a little busier on holiday weekends and through the summer.

Kenneth E Smith Memorial Labyrinth at Hawthorn Park6067 E Old Maple Ave., Terre Haute, Indiana 47803GPS: N 39o 29.383 W 87o 19.422

The memorial resides inside Hawthorn Park adjacent to the Dogwood Shelter. The labyrinth, completed in 2003, is an 80 foot diameter circle constructed out of aggregate mix concrete. It is patterned after the labyrinth that was laid on the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France around 1220 A.D. The singular path is switchback, turning and twisting, forcing walkers to concentrate as they make their way forward to the middle of the labyrinth and back again. This labyrinth and garden is designed for all ages, those experiencing grief or emotional problems or those who simply want to free their minds of the pressures of the day. Children simply enjoy the challenge of staying within the boundaries of the path. Mrs. Lavern Smith donated the major part of the funding for this project in memory of her late husband, Kenneth E. Smith, who died in May 2000.

Log Inn12491 CR 200 E, Haubstadt, IN 47639GPS: N 38o 10.381 W 87o 31935

The Log Inn is a family-style restaurant located in thecommunity of Warrenton. The Log Inn was founded around 1825 by Mr. Henry Haub, the namesake of nearby Haubstadt. During its lifetime the Log Inn has had several uses including: a host to Abraham Lincoln; a stop on the Underground Railroad; and a stop on the Dixie Highway, the main road between Chicago and Florida, which eventually became US 41. A dance hall was later built above the tavern and store and the complex would later become known as the Log Inn. The Log Inn is officially recognized as the oldest restaurant in Indiana. In recent years, the Log Inn was featured in Food Network’s Best of Viewer’s Choice Program. The restaurant is closed on Sunday & Monday and can get busy in the evenings so all ahead if you plan on eating to reserve a seat, 812-867-3216.
