On Friday night, Senior Grant Richardson doubled and later scored in the 5th inning to provide the eventual winning run as Fishers claimed its first- ever Class 4A state title. Richardson also pitched the final 1.2 IP in relief to earn the save. Luke Al- bright picked up the victory with 5.1 IP of three-hit ball. He didn’t allow his first hit until the 5th inning. The Irish (23-9-1), who were seeking a repeat title under second-year coach Ed Freije, loaded the bases in the 6th inning, but Richardson coaxed a K to end the threat. Tigers of coach Matthew Cherry finish 29-7. Matt Wolff of Fishers High School was the winner of the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in Class 4A. In 1A, Daleville CF Ryan Hale singled in the go- ahead run in the top of the 9th inning to lift Daleville to its second Class A state title in 3 seasons. Coach Terry Turner’s Broncos finished the season with 10-straight victories and a 22-9 record. Univer- sity tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Neither team could break through over the next two innings to send the game to extras. Peyton Smith pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to pick up the victory for the Broncos. University, coached by Chris Estep, finished 28-7 after coming into the final on a 16- game winning streak. Ryan Williams of University High School was the winner of the L.V. In 2A, a four-run outburst in the fifth inning and a fine pitching performance by senior left-hander Ty Bothwell led Boone Grove to the school’s first-ever state championship at Victory Field. The Wolves, of first-year coach Patrick Antone, entered the bottom of the seventh inning with a 5-0 lead, but saw South- ridge plate four unearned runs and load the bases with two out. Boone Grove relief pitcher Bryce Mor- ris, however, coaxed a popup for the final out. Both- well allowed six hits and struck out 12 in 6.2 IP. Bothwell finished the season with a 10-2 record, a 0.48 ERA, and 170 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings pitched. Southridge, which was seeking to score a football-baseball championship double. The 59ers (31-6) started slow, but scored twice in the third inning and added four more in the fourth to take command. First baseman Joe Rycerz had the big blow in the fourth inning as he belted the only homerun of the weekend a blast over LF. All told, Andrean had six extra-base hits in the contest. Michael Doolin (11-1), a junior who has committed to Vanderbilt University, allowed just three hits and struck out 13 en route to the complete game. He only ran into difficulty in the seventh inning, as the Dragons loaded the bases with no out, eventually scoring on a Stephen Davis sacrifice fly. Coach Joe Decker’s Dragons, who finish 26-4. This year's state finals enjoyed great attendance.

Combined with the 4A Friday night crowd of 2,782,

Saturday drew 6,664. Thus, totaling 9,446 for the

weekend.

On Friday night, Senior Grant Richardson doubled and later scored in the 5th inning to provide the eventual winning run as Fishers claimed its first-ever Class 4A state title. JUNIOR SHOWCASE UPDATE

Thank you to Dennis Kas and the

IHSBCA Executive Council who ran

this event with great efficiency.

The format allowed a lot of time

for the 70+ juniors on hand to

demonstrate their abilities for

the 17 college coaches from across

the Midwest and 1 scout who were

in attendance. The showcase was

held at Four Winds Field prior to

the North/South Series. Thank you

to the Coveleski Stadium staff for

their work in getting the facility

ready for this annual event. We

continued the format instituted in

2014 that had the pitchers report-

ing first so that they had a bet-

ter opportunity to participate in

the rest of the showcase and col-

lege coaches showed up early to

see the arms. Many thanks also go

out to BSN Sports who sponsored

the showcase T-shirts.

Congratulations to the 2018 IHSAA STATE CHAMPIONS!

Executive Director Update

Summer is gone……where did it go?!?! Seems like I ask myself that question every year. I look forward to the state tournament and then the

all-star series because I really enjoy these events. Then I look up and it is late July and here we go again with another school year.

Congratulations to our four state champions: Daleville (1A); Boone Grove (2A); Andrean (3A); and Fishers in 4A! Always a good time

spending the weekend in Indianapolis and watching some of the best baseball our state has to offer. Plus, the Indians and Randy Lewandowski

are excellent hosts!!

The North-South series was an outstanding event in South Bend this summer. Special thanks for Jim Treadway and his group for hosting us

for the weekend. Excellent venues at Four Winds, the Century Center, and the Double Tree. If you have not visited South Bend lately there

are a lot of neat changes that have occurred downtown and it is worth your time to take a visit.

Moving Forward there are several things on the horizon:

The pitch count and ramifications for violating the rule are being reviewed by the IHSBCA and the IHSAA. Stay tuned this fall for more

updates, but there should be some changes before the 2019 state tournament.

The survey we did for 7 weeks of arm care during the conditioning phase is well underway to being approved as an emergency by-law.

Russ Degitz (Principal at Huntington North HS) has submitted the amendment and it will be on the IHSAA agenda sometime this fall if

all goes well. Again, stay tuned!

BIG CHANGE!!! The North-South all-star series will be held the week AFTER the state finals next year. We will still do nominations at

the regional meeting next year, but will need coaches to get their players to commit ASAP after the selection takes place. We are still

determining a time table for the process, but there may be a preliminary meeting at the state clinic to create a “potential” all-star list to

help expedite the selection process. You will still be allowed to nominate at the regional meeting so that option will not change. Series

dates are June 21-23 in Madison, Indiana.

NEED YOUR HELP!!! If you have a potential all-star next year and he is selected I need you to have done several things in advance of

the regional meeting: please check with their college coach and make sure they can play (especially pitchers); have a sponsor lined up;

please turn the paperwork around within 24 hours from the time I send it to you…..this is critical for organizational purposes; and make

sure that you or an assistant coach is at the series to be introduced with your player.

Please remember to honor the IHSAA schedule with the new Limited Contact Policy and also understand how the conditioning portion works.

August 27 begins our first limited contact period and it ends on October 13….this is where you receive 2 hours of instruction 2 times a week

with no coaching restrictions. Time periods are on www.ihsaa.org under the Resources tab and 2018-19 Sports Calendar.

Looking forward to another successful year of high school baseball!

2018 PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Again, this year when coaches voted for the All-State teams, they also had the opportunity to select the Indiana Player of the Year. The ballot included a nominee from each of the IHSBCA districts, plus any player who was drafted.

This years award was presented at the North/South All-Star banquet. The 2018 Indiana Player of the Year was Nick Schnell who played at Indianapolis Roncalli H.S. for Head Coach Aaron Kroll. Nick was drafted in the 1st round by the Tampa Bay Rays in this years MLB draft, signed, and is cur-rently playing in the Gulf Coast League.

Coaches—Please take the time to fill out the forms and information on page 8 and

send the items to the respective individual. Your participation and involvement in

the IHSBCA is greatly appreciated!!
