    Indian solar radiation data analysis

The move is aimed at enabling states and developers of solar power

projects take investment decisions based on scientic rationale.

M"#$ have already set %p &' solar monitoring stations forassessment of solar power in the co%ntry, which are going toe(pand...)* more s%ch stations shall come, and very soon entireco%ntry wo%ld be covered.

The stations have e+%ipment to record all types of data on radiation, from s%n, especially at sites that fall in ones receiving higher directsolar radiation in a view to generate investment-grade solar radiationdata.

The ministry has assigned the task of solar radiation monitoring to -W$T, hennai, as centralised data collection now being done there.

    • M"#$ is also looking to give a s%bsidy p%sh to the rooftopprojects in renewable and is m%lling a special scheme forthe p%rpose.

M"#$ is coming o%t with a separate scheme to give ap%sh to rooftop and want to open o%t this sector in s%ch amanner that people can generate power from their roofsfor themselves and p%t s%rpl%s power directly into the

grid, witho%t it being stored in batteries rst

People sho%ld be able to generate power at the cost of #s/ to 0 per %nit and with some s%bsidy it sho%ld comedown to #s & to ) per %nit and get stabilised over ne(t 1&years, .

#ooftop has the potential to change the face of powergeneration in India, it is for the power distrib%tioncompanies to %nderstand its importance.

    • A st%dy %ndertaken by the ministry with ind%stry e(perts shows that forne(t ve years there will be no tro%ble in p%tting power directly into grid.

In c%rrent 2ive-3ear plan, the target for renewable energy in the co%ntryhas been set at 4*,*** MW, which re+%ire an estimated investment of #s

    1.& lakh crore.

56f this 4*,*** MW, '&,*** MW is for wind, '*,*** MW for solar, 4,***MW for hydro and balance for other reso%rces like bio-mass etc.

Abo%t India7s power scenario, the co%ntry has over 1 lakh MW of installed

capacity, besides 4*,*** to 8*,*** MW capacity of captive generation.

The renewable installed capacity is now 1&,*** MW, which is '1 per centof installed capacity and & per cent of the energy %sed.

6n "ational 9olar Mission, the target of 1*,*** MW for the rst phaseending March 1*'4 will be met and shall e(ceed both in terms of grid and

    o:-grid.

In the second phase, the target is to achieve '*,*** MW by 1*';. The

Ministry of "ew and #enewable $nergy=M"#$> has initiated a major project on 9olar#adiation #eso%rce Assessment =9##A>across the nation to assess and +%antify the

    Solar Radiation data in India

    • India is endowed with rich solar energy

reso%rce since it is located in the e+%atorials%n belt of the earth. Theoretically Indias solarpower reception is abo%t &*** trillionkWh?year with abo%t 4** clear s%nny days in a

year. The daily average solar energy incidentover India varies from 8 to ; kWh?m1 withabo%t 1,4**B4,1** s%nshine ho%rs per year, depending %pon location. This is far more thanc%rrent total energy cons%mption.

    •  The daily average global radiation is aro%nd &Cwh?m1 in north - eastern and hilly areas toabo%t ; Cwh?m1 in Western regions and colddesert areas.

    •  The ann%al global radiation varies from ')**to 11** kWh?m1, which is comparable with

radiation received in the tropical and s%b-tropical regions. Altho%gh the highest ann%alglobal radiation is received in #ajasthan, northern

    9olar radiation in Maharashtra

    • Gh%le and Ealgaon from northMaharashtra, 6smanabad andA%rangabad from Marathwada and

handrap%r and Wardha districts of@idarbha have the highest e(pos%reto solar rays.

    9olar radiation in #ajasthan

    •  The direct normal insolation over#ajasthan varies from '/** Cwh?m1to 1)**Cwh?m1. Mostly the western

part of #ajasthan is blessed withab%ndant solar energy. Eodhp%r in#ajasthan is receiving ma(im%m

solar radiation which is known as 9%nity of India. #ajasthan is alsoblessed with ab%ndant land, so it

wo%ld be ideal for solar P@.
