Smart city traffic tech could save us 4.2B hours yearly
Smart city innovations relating to traffic and road improvements
are projected to make a massive impact on the lives of urban
dwellers in the coming five years.
A study by Juniper Research found that smart parking and smart
traffic management projects will save 4.2 billion man-hours each
year by 2021, according to an article by Enterprise Innovation.
This works out to each city’s annually saving an entire working
day that would have been otherwise spent on driving.
Juniper’s report, “Worldwide Smart Cities: Energy, Transport &
Lighting 2016-2021″found that these efficiencies will be driven by
rising city populations that are putting pressure ...

FLOUD: The answer to smart city transport management
Nowadays, almost everybody's life is affected by traffic (of both vehicles and peo-
ple) in a number of ways. The recurrent questions; how long will it take to drive to
the office; how long will it take to find a parking spot; how long will you have to
wait in line at a public desk? Every day we somehow have to deal with these traffic
flows, overcoming such obstacles.
Smart cities are particularly interested in traffic flows, as this information can ef-
fectively be used by local municipalities and stakeholders to make decisions and
design strategies. Unfortunately, traffic monitoring usually requires complex infra-
structures that are expensive and complex both to install and maintain, and this lim-
its the diffusion of state-of-the-art traffic monitoring solutions to few subjects that
can afford to buy them. ...

E-rickshaws to vroom on Ahmedabad roads soon
Who would not be acquainted with smart phones, smart classes and smart cities? What goes behind build-
ing up these 'smart' things is, the upgraded technology that makes life easier. Inspired by the smart e-
rickshaw project of Varanasi launched in May, the Gujarat Government has given a thumbs up to a similar
project to curb pollution, a welcome decision that was taken on the World Environment Day recently.
As the youth can be the agents of change, there is a special emphasis to make these rickshaws popular
amongst them. And to do so, there will be special discounts available for college students, just like the
BRTS. "E-rickshaws will have passes for the college students on a monthly basis. If earlier, they were
spending `5 per km, the monthly passes will ensure an expenditure of `3 per km only," says Rikesh Parikh,
one of the members working on the e- rickshaw project ...

WiFi birdhouses power Amsterdam “smart cities”
As part of a unique Smart Cities initiative, Amsterdam is tackling its
pollution problem by installing with treehouses that emit free WiFi
when air pollution levels are healthy. The scheme, known as ‘Tree
WiFi’ is hard to miss walking the tree-lined canals of the Dutch city,
as LEDs on the birdhouses illuminate green to highlight to passers-
by when pollution levels are at a reasonable level. It is hoped the
project will find success in offering an incentive to making environ-
mentally-friendly decisions which keep air pollution down. ... Read More ...
Smart Bins for Smart Cities

double in developing and underdeveloped nations. It is important to

waste bins; cities can monitor levels of trash in each bin and the tech-
nology compacts the waste. ...

Solar Powered Villages
How India's 'smart villages' are centralising solar power
The Indian government has committed 980bn rupees ($14.5bn; £10.9bn)
to a flagship smart cities' programme, but the social entrepreneur behind
the country's first smart village thinks they've missed some low-hanging
fruit. City-dwellers tend to take electricity for granted, says Ashok Das,
but for the roughly 200 million Indians living off-grid, access to power is
a privilege, not a right. Mr Das says that makes them a fertile ground for
experimenting with smarter ways of using energy that could help the ru-
ral poor leapfrog traditional power networks ...
