A prize of a dollar was offered for the best description of home life at Carlisle, by a boy. Several productions were handed in and the following interesting story by a little Chippe- wa boy was one of the number: I became a student of the Carlisle Indian School in 1889. I never saw my home since. The first day of my arrival at Carlisle, I did not know where I was. The only part which I know was that I was at some school. As I went around the grounds I saw many strange things. Trying to And which direction my home is, it troubled me, because I did not know which way was east or west. i went all around the shops looking at what the boys wore doing, talking Indian all the while, because I did not know the rules of the school. After staying a while in this school, T begin to think of my home 1 did not know what to do. It was bard to fight it out, because I know 1 could not get home and it was of no use to try to go home. This was soon forgotten and everything went well. Then I began to like it very much nearly better than my own home. I did not know how to work examples nor read. My first school room was one of the. next lowest. I went to school but did not care of learn- ing Only what I care for was to play. I did not have enough common sense, or either I did not use them right. After a while I made up my mind to try to learn. It was hard to learn 'how to understand things. Now at this time I know the rules. At once 1 begin to obey them IJentirely stop talking my language, and talked English. Then 1 begin to Understand better what the teacher was trying to make me learn. The English language was helping me great- ly in my studies. Before the ending of the year I was pro- moted to No. 5. This was the starting of the gi’ade of frac- tions and other things At first T thought there was but little to learn, but I found there was more to learn than I can learn. I stopped at our school one and one half years; then I left the school. The reason I left it, it was to make myself useful some where else, besides in this school; and to mak» money, and learn how to use it, and to get the ideas of the way the white man living. Shortly after I arrived at my country home,I got sick, siek for nearly one month. Capt Pratt told me, “Come home! Let some one 1 ake your place.” I came here to work and I am going to work I determine to stick to my word as I did. X lived with the same man for an year and one half and then return to the school. H on. B en jam in B u tte rw orth and J C. Dow­ell were am ong the d istingushed visitors a t the school th is week. M r. B u tte rw o rth ad ­dressed th e pupils a t dinner.

M r. S tand ing has re tu rn ed from h is tr ip th ro u g h the South W est. H e m ay give us a little account of h is in te restin g jou rney at some fu tu re tim e. H e carried w ith h im a m agic lan te rn and in h is ta lks of C arlisle, showed on canvas the people how we look. H e found everyw here friends of Carlisle, and had a w arm welcom e w herever he went.

Rev. Mr. W ile preached the baccalaureateserm on on S unday afternoon to the g rad u a t­ing class of ’94, and a m ost im pressive ta lk it w as, one to live by, one to grow by, one to rise bv, one to forever rem em ber. The st rong per­sonality of M r. W ile entered in to every word and his dep th of feeling as he spoke was m a n ­ifest in a m ost earnest delivery.

The snow was k in d to come in tim e to give every th ing a clean fresh appearance for Com ­m encem ent.

Mrs. B aldw in, the k ind lady whom Dr. M ontezum a calls M other, is here. She has been; called M rs. M ontezum a by some on the grounds so affectionately does the D r. speak of her.

Mr. and Mrs. Otto W ells have come for Com m encem ent. I t will be rem em bered th a t O tto W ells m arried M ary P ark h u rst a t our school a few m onths since. T hey are now liv ing on th e farm of Mr. W oodm an in Bucks C ounty. ^

The C arlisle Tndian School bakers offer a prem ium of ten dollars to the person w ho can shove w hen and w here he saw bread th a t was not fit for use on account “ of us w earing our coats.” “ W onder if the k itch en boys could offer as m uch in respect to the ir ap ro n s!” re ­m arked a by-stander.

The boys and girls of the C heyenne, A rana- hoc and Com anche tribes have contribu ted $200 of the ir savings for the purpose of b rin g ­ing to our com m encem ent Chiefs Lone W olf, of the K iow as, Q uanah, of the Com auches, Cloud Chief of the Cheyennes and B lack Coy­ote, of th e A rapahoes.

H arry K ohpay has finished the course at the E astm an B usiness College, Poughkeepsie, and lias h is diplom a. W hen asked if he fe lt th a t he knew a great deal, he replied, “No, I have found out th a t T know no th in g .” H arry ex ­pects to retu rn to E astm an for a course in type-w riting and stenography.

resulted in the shooting of a large num ber of surv'lus Indian dogs. One boy was b itten and died w ith hydrophobia.

T his tim e I was two room s h igher th an be­fore.

I said to m yself. “ I m ust do better work, than I have done yet.

The Hardest th in g for m e to learn is to read an d spell. I w ould read ou t loud at m y room, try to m ake m yself a good reader.

G ym nastic exercise, I love.T would exercise every day, excepting S u n ­

day.Its fun to be in w hen the re are good m any

boys in try in g to get ahead of each o ther in every th ing

A nother gam e w hich the boys are fond of, was p lay ing ball.

A t first I did no t know how. I w as afraid of ball.

I like to play.I tried to learn how and I succeeded in th is

very well.I jo ined a club w hich the nam e was Jun io r.

I played short stop for them .This was one of th e hardest place to play,

when they send the ball on the ground sw ift.My fiugers were nearly broken S' veral

tim es.W hen I ba t I was very sure to h it the ball.

I qu it p laying ball and again left the school, to w ork for some m oney to go to Chicago th e follow ing year. .

T his tim e T stayed out on ly from J u ly to Septem ber. This tim e I saved $17.35.

A fter re tu rn in g to th is school, I w ent to work and s tudy m y lessons, th in k in g to learn ju s t as m uch as I can, for th is was my last year a t th is school, and w hen October cam e, a g reat num ber of us w ent to the \ \ orld s h a ir . A ll w hat I saw I sh a ll never forget.

T his is one of the greatest sigh ts m y eyes ever meet.

A fter re tu rn in g 1 was tire d ; I could not get down a t m y studies as before.

Soon all th is w ent aw ay and again increased m y knowledge.

A ll th e stud ies were, Language, A rith m e tic , H yiegue, Reading, and Spelling, H isto ry and very lit tle on draw ing.

T ra in in g School deligh ted two audiences in C ham bersburg on W ash in g to n ’s b ir th d a y .

A t th e m atinee the lad ies and ch ild ren were out in large force and evidenced h earty en jo y ­m en t of the excellen tly rendered program .

The audience a t n ig h t was a large and fash­ionable one. The fa ir daugh ters of W ilson w ere th e re , m any of them in quain “ fore de w ah ” costum es, w ithou t h a ts and w ith pow­dered hair.

The program given by C onductor D ennison W heelock an d his m en was so m uch enjoyed th a t by reason of encores it was doubled in leng th .
