Mehndi ArtMehndi is the art of painting the hands and feet with a paste made from powdered, dried leaves of the henna plant. The stain is usually reddish brown in color and fades to orange over time. Coffee, lemon, tea, and essential oils are sometimes added for texture, smell or to help the stain. Mehndi started in the Middle East and Northern Africa over 5,000 years ago. Brides will usually have elaborate mehndi designs as part of their wedding outfit.

Lotus FlowerThe Lotus is the national flower of India. In India it is considered more than a flower – it represents both beauty and non-attachment. The lotus grows in fresh water ponds and lakes and in semitropical climates. It blossoms gradually – one petal at a time and reaches full bloom when the rays of the sun hit the flower. The lotus comes in many different colors including white, red, blue, pink, and purple.
The lotus is edible and believed to have healing properties.
The cultureMost of the people in
india practice the hindu
religion. Hindus believe
God is all things in the
world. Most believe in
reincarnation. this means
that when the body dies,
the spirit is reborn into
a new form. What they
are reborn as depends
on their karma.
Karma is the belief that
everything that people
do in life determines
what will happen to them
in the future. If a
person lives a good life
she will be reincarnated
into a higher form.
Those who live a bad life
might come back as an
insect or other form.

India’s Painted ElephantsIndia’s royalty would paint their elephants and adorn them with gold and silver to look more impressive. Today, the tradition continues to attract tourism and to show respect for elephants which are an important part of the Hindu religion.
Until 2013, an Elephant Festival was held every year in India. Animal activists are concerned about the colored powder used to paint the elephants and that the performances were not humane.

Food in IndiaMany of India's people are vegetarians,
meaning they don't eat meat. Hindus
believe that the cow is a sacred animal
and never eat beef.
Much of the food in India is flavored
with spices such as cinnamon, garlic,
and cumin. Most meals include rice,
vegetables, bread, and yogurt.
