‘FIJI IDOL’ ORGANIZED FOR YET ANOTHER YEAR
Fiji Idol 2011 organ-ized last month was well at-tended by the Fiji com-munity. The p r o g r a m held at the C h a n d n i Restaurant in Fremont b r o u g h t singers from the Fiji com-munity from the Bay Area and the neighboring areas. The objective of the singing quest , to provide en-tertainment to the Fiji community and declare a winner seems to have been met. However, the contest could be taken to greater heights by providing some training and coach-ing to the contestants prior to the contest by some singing expert/s. This could bring better quality singing and will also boost the contestants singing career. The contestants should be commended for their ef-forts in entertaining the audience who had spent time and money for being there.

Fiji’s majority public uses public transportation. There has always been a tussle between the public and the transport companies on the issue of fare increases. The recent increase in taxi fares prompted the need for more bus services as people could not afford the increased taxi fares. The de-mand seems to be throughout the country. People need public transporta-tion during most parts of the day and night. Taxi services are ideal at late nights when the bus services cease. It is believed the increase in the bus users has made it necessary for addi-tional bus services throughout the coun-try. There is also need for 24—hour service according to a bus company which is prepared to provide the service. The increase in the demand for bus ser-vices will boom the bus industry while the taxi operators will lose their pas-sengers with the in-

A Fiji’s Past MEMORIES TO CHERISH...
FIJI’S DESERTED CANE
FARMS—NOW HISTORY! Fiji’s sugar cane industry during its peak days was not just an industry, its was a phenomenon. While it contributed towards Fiji’s major economy it was the livelihood of many in Fiji, whose life revolved around the cane farming industry. All of the west and most of the north was fully involved in the production of cane and the country depended on it as its major income earner. A lot of the farmers did not physically see a lot of money coming out of their daily hard work, many times in scorching heat, but they still depended on it as their sole income source. A lot of cash was traded with the goods and services they needed during the year for their living. The shop keep-ers in the sugar cane region made fortunes by providing goods to the farmers throughout the year on credit system and obtained cash when the cane pay-ments were made to the farmers.
Apart from the actual farm-ing there were lots of other related activities carried out on around the cane fields. There was lots of sociali-zation such as having tea, lunch and even grog ses-sions together and that provided a sense of belongingness and togetherness to the farmers. It gave them a community of their own which was far different from the lives in Fiji’s urban areas. If the cane farms could speak they would narrate ma ny memorable events that took place there. Today many of these, once prosperous farms are lying idle covered with bush and have become history.

Why is a certain person born to certain parents?
Karmic debt is the reason for that. Your actions and samskaras make you beholden to certain people. You are indebted to them and this debt has to be repaid at some point in time or the other. The debt need not be merely financial. It could be that you did something to a certain person or he did something to you. The damage has to be re-paired and the debt has to be canceled. If it is left un reptaired or un canceled in this birth, it has to be set right in the next. This is what is meant by karmic debt. It is the main factor which decides why, where, when and how you will be re-born.
Does spiritual development determine the birth?
Yes, that is also a factor. A person who is spiritually evolved will take birth in a family which is pious and religious and where the environ-ment will be conducive to further spiritual growth. The family may be materially poor but spiritually it will be rich except a few exceptions that they have to work through to cancel recurred debts or deeds or vice versa. The Saint Valmikiji and Tulsisdasji, for example, were born into a poor but religiously rich family and inheritance. Their stories re-veal their actions to conclude canceling of debts prior to piousness.

A PERSPECT IVE
A PERSPECT IVE
Is Service to the Less Fortunate Service to God?
Most people are highly religious or hold reli-gious beliefs. The very religious dedicate themselves to the worship of the Almighty God and do everything possible to honor and please him. And why not? We are here without the knowledge of where we came from and why we are here. Believing in God is absolutely necessary to our existence. Everything about our birth to the final depar-ture is undoubtedly miraculous. We come from unexplainable origins, do our things of life and eventually depart. Most of us constantly need the support of our unseen creator to give us comfort and to guide us in this worldly existence. Who else can we fall back on in times of need? It is the omnipotent, omniscient and the all -caring Creator that we have to rely on to help solve our problems. All this is very understandable as we can’t rely on human beings to solve the myriad of problems we face in our worldly existence. We can con-fide in our God because we can say anything without worrying that our privacy rights will be breached! Needless to say, each of us who are here in this world is God’s creation; we, our fam-ily members, and the less fortunate. As such, all must be loved by the creator regard-less of our value or worth to the society. However, it seems that some of us see those immediate to us and God in one light and others differently. The more removed someone is from our direct responsibility the less we care. Some of us will worship God to the fullest extent yet have little or no time for the less fortunate even in our own families. I agree we are not responsible or expected to solve the problems of this society but it does worry me if people do not discharge their obligations even to their parents or siblings who may be disadvantaged in some way. I wonder if God happily accepts our dedication to him while we go about life ignoring our responsibilities to the less fortunate. I tend to think that he would be much happier if we willingly discharged our responsibilities to all he has created. Service to the less fortunate may indeed be service to God. This is just a personal view.

Purity and Innocence of Children….
In this world dominated by stress, jealousy, ag-ony and unhappiness, the notion of purity and innocence of children can guide us through and make us come out of the quagmire of life. The children’s innocence towards life projects a highly noble message that can have tremendous positive effect on people’s lives. The children are taught to live, first by their parents and later the teachers teach them in schools but in return what the children teach the world is something worth pondering about. It is believed the element of innocence and purity is dominant in children up to the beginning of their teens and from there onwards the other qualities start dominating and the innocence quality starts to fade away but may not be com-pletely lost. In this world divided along race, culture, sect and clan and even other divisions the con-cept of innocence of children can provide great relief to the suffering beings. They are ignorant of the quality of selfishness, jealousy, hatred etc and everything and everyone is alike to them, this is pure innocence. The peace they enjoy is probably the sweetest part of human life. The innocence quality does not die out in adults but is somewhat subdued and can be brought back to live again, changing their lives for good. It is accepted that as adults we have certain responsibilities to fulfill in order to live a successful life. These requirements or obligations of earning money, having other wants that have turned into needs today, will lead us to a successful practical life and happiness, which can many times be temporary.
Only meeting these demands of life may allow us to live a life devoid of peace and it is peace that we are all longing for in life, ma ny times even not knowingly.

YAGORA DRINKING IN FIJI—UNDER ATTACK
Fiji’s national drink Yagona seems to be under heavy control as the Ministry of Health de-clares nation wide aware-ness on the risks and ef-fects of exces-sive yagona drinking. Dis-eases such as diabetes and high blood pressure has been identified as diseases contributed by regular drinking of yagona. People take the ‘drink’ in the afternoons to wind down after the day’s hard work. It seems many people make it a habit of excessive daily drinking which affects their health and work. Yagona drinking was common in many offices and work places in Fiji in the past but control seems to have been made in that area. Apart from Fiji the ‘drink’ has found its way in the homes of the former Fiji

SMOKE FREE VILLAGES- BAD NEWS FOR SMOKERS Fiji seems to be going health conscious as some villages are being declared ‘smoke free’ in Vanualevu. It seems two villages so far have faced ‘smoke—ban’ by the Ministry of Health. Freelance smokers will now face the battle of smoke—ban as they will have to go to special areas allotted for smoking. It may be difficult for the smokers to abide by the new regulation and as such the ban could even cut down the number o f smokers in the village. Smok-ing has effect on even the non—smokers as they are in the same envi-ronment where smoking takes place. The new regulation should bring about healthy environment in Fiji’s villages which are surrounded by the healthy and beautiful nature.

NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR FIJI’S REMOTE TOWN
“Service to Hu-manity is the Best Work of Life” is a motor of the Jaycees International. It has been put to practice by an American couple who are believed to have under-taken a project to put a secon-dary school in place in Savusavu. The kind gesture has been displayed by the founders of “Keep Children in School”. The couple have helped numerous children throughout Fiji who needed assistance in school fees and supplies. Building a secondary school is a huge project and such charity work by people will be greatly hon-ored by the residents of the area who will be the direct beneficiar-ies of the project.

While Fiji has a capacity to grow various types of crops, importance is being given to potato, which is in great consumption in almost all homes in Fiji. Potato has been gener-ally grown in Sigatoka Val-ley for years and now the crop is being planted in other parts of the western division of Fiji. The crop is being harvested now and being transported to the markets for sale. Government assistance is believed to have been going on for the last few years as a trial for boosting po-tato farming in Fiji.

FIJI’S NATIONAL BUDGET 2012—PEOPLE’S BUDGET
Fiji’s yearly national budget is viewed with lots of seriousness by Fiji community at all the levels. The budget decides people’s livelihood for the upcoming year. 2012 should brighten people’s lives as the na-tional budget cuts down the personal taxes and the take—home pay increases for the working community of Fiji. The government has taken steps to keep the econ-omy in place at the same time reduce the in-come tax. It is believed the budget is also suited to the business com-munity. The cut in the personal tax which will improve the quality of life for the people as they will have more money in their pay packet should be wel-comed by Fiji people .

TOURISM BOOST FOR LONE SAVUSAVU TOWN Tourism industry seems to be thriving in the lone northern town of Sa-vusavu. It is be-lieved cruise ships make fre-quent visits to the town boom-ing the handi-craft and other tourist products. Savusavu is a small town lo-cated on the sea coast making it possible for the ships carrying tourists to visit the rich and natural scenery, the town has to offer. Market vendors mostly women seem to be doing good business with their prod-ucts. Handicraft sales was common and thriving in Fiji’s capital sometime back as Suva was visited by tourist ships on regular basis.

WATER SYSTEM UPGRADE - IN THE WESTERN DIVISION
Water being the most essential human need should be readily available to people. Most residents in Fiji’s western division may not have been getting regular supply of tap water. The towns from Rakiraki to Sigatoka now will have constant supply of water after all the towns have had their water supply system upgraded. Millions of dol-lars spent on the project should be well appreci-ated by the resi-dents of the west towns. The setting up of a reservoir in Ba would give the large district constant and better water sup-ply. Water prob-lems have been faced by most parts of the country including the central division in the recent past years.

WEST—PREPARATION FOR CHRISTMAS BY INMATES
Christmas is celebrated wholeheartedly by all races of people in Fiji. The multiracial community of Fiji truly becomes multiracial as the people join in and celebrate Christmas. The inmates in Lautoka seem to be preparing for the grand celebration in the sugar city and at the Nadi International Airport during December. The program seems to be aimed at giving sense of belonging to the in-m a t e s . Many such p r o g r a m s must be under way in most parts of the country as the Christ-mas ap-proaches. The cele-b r a t i o n gains momentum as it is the celebration for year—end and the unfolding of the new year.
