Note: After replacement, the compressor and it’s accessories must have proper processing, and the components must be recycled according to the material group (ferrous, non-ferrous, polymers, oils, ...) directives. These recomendations are intended to minimize the adverse impacts that may be caused to the environment.

Embraco will not be responsible for, nor will it give a warranty/guarantee to any compressors proven to be damaged by improper handling, transportation or storage.

Please feel free to browse our website if you'd like more information about Embraco.

Compressor Handling

1 - Introduction

The Embraco compressor is designed for durability as well as exceptional performance. It is after all, the key component within a refrigerator, freezer or light commercial refrigeration unit, such as in a vending machine, water cooler or icemaker.

Despite its steel outer shell, the compressor is not indestructible. Because of its sensitive internal mechanisms and asymmetric external components, the compressor requires common sense care in handling.

By following the recommended Handling, Transporting and Storing Procedures outlined in this valuable brochure, you can be certain the Embraco compressors you have received will leave your dispatch area in perfect working condition. You may find these procedures very similar to the materials handling standards your company already requires.

PLEASE NOTE: Failure to comply with Embraco's recommended

handling procedures can result in irreversible damage, which may

render the compressor unusable and void any warranty. These

procedures include protecting the stored compressors from unfavorable

climatic conditions such as excessive humidity, dust, and most

importantly, precipitation such as rain.

Compressor Handling

Keep in mind, improper handling procedures can damage the following external compressor components shown in the drawing below:

Embraco compressors are shipped according to your company's

instructions. The three most common methods are:

• Bulk - unboxed compressors transported directly on pallets, which

are then stacked according to recommended height and weight.

• Boxed - individually boxed compressors transported on pallets,

which are then stacked according to recommended height and weight.

• Custom format - according to customer specifications.

This brochure will cover the proper handling instructions for Bulk

and Boxed shipments.

2 - Pallet removal

We recommend that pallet removal be conducted from right to left successively, avoiding contract between the dividers, as shown in figure below:

Warning: The container's transportation (by water carriage/truckage/air service) may displace the goods resulting a high risk of tumbling and fall, while oppening the container's door.

3 – Pallet relocation

Due to product safety and soundness, each palette must be individually removed and relocated.

OBS: The palette must not be dragged as this operation can cause breakage or damage to the base structure.

4 - Pallet lifting

Carefully position the forklift blades under the pallet's main supports, making certain the lift blades do not come into contact with the compressors or their external components.

• Positioning the forklift blades under the outer edge of the pallet frame can cause damage to the compressor's base plate.

06

5 - Pallet moving

When transporting loaded pallets, avoid allowing one pallet to come into contact with another pallet. These "knocks" or bumps can cause damage to the connectors, relay cover support, hermetic terminals and/or label.

6 - Pallet stacking

Make sure that the point of the fork lift does not exceed the limits of the palette.

This precaution will prevent damage to compressors on other palettes.

(Palette depth = 800 mm or 31.5” (inches)).

07

Compressor Handling

7 - Truck loading

When loading the pallet(s) of compressors into a truck, take care to prevent pallets from bumping into each other. Pallets of compressors must not come into contact with each other while being transported.

8 - Compressor transporting

When compressors are loaded for delivery in a trailer, the load must be properly blocked and braced in order to insure there is no movement or shifting of the load during transport, which could cause damage.

08

Compressor Handling

9 - Additional cargo

Should it become necessary to take on additional freight, the Carrier must guarantee there will be no contact between other products and the compressors, especially if these other products are corrosive.

10 - Pallets with compressors packaged in individual boxes

Regardless of how short the transport distance, the pallets of compressors in individual boxes must be banded and stretch/shrink wrapped and protected from humidity and rain/or precipitation.

The boxes can not be transported in stacked pallets without being securely tied, nor can they be placed loose on the truck floor. Precautions must be taken to prevent denting, crushing or damaging the boxes.

09

Compressor Handling

11 - Unloading the compressorsDue to their bulk weight and the need to maintain even weight

distribution for safety, standard fork lifts or manual pallet handlers must be used when unloading the compressors from a truck or stacking area.

12 - Unloading the truck / throwing the boxesUnder no circumstances should any compressor be tossed or

thrown during unloading. The compressor suspension system was designed to absorb normal transportation requirements, as well as the vibrations when the compressor is running. However, any other type of impact, no matter how small, can permanently damage the suspension system, rendering the compressor unusable and voiding the warranty.

NOTE: Compressor suspension system can be damaged when boxes are thrown.

10

Compressor Handling

The compressor should remain in an upright position, supported by its base plate, during handling, transporting and storing.

This upright position prevents possible damage to the compressor's internal mechanisms, and keeps the oil out of the suction chamber.

14 - Correct positioning for handling, transporting and storing

13 - Returning compressors to stock

If a surplus of compressors develops at the assembly line, the extra compressors are usually re-palletized and returned to stock. Please verify your company's procedures.

During re-palletizing movement, great care should be taken to position compressors correctly on the pallets so they can stack properly, and to avoid contact/impact with the fragile external compressor components.

Compressor Handling

• The table below illustrates other acceptable positions during these basic operations.

Any position marked “X” should not be used.

This recommendation is applicable for the compressor before or after it has been installed in the refrigeration system.

15 - Storage/stacking

There should be a minimum distance between stacks of about 40 cm / 1.30 ft. For personnel safety, and to prevent collapse, make certain the floor is flat/even and strong enough to accomodate the accumulated weight of multiple pallets. A pallet, loaded with compressors, weighs approximately 950 kg / 2,095 lbs.

A four (4) pallet stack is the maximum permitted for safety.

16 – Storage time

16.1 – Compressor

16.1.1 – Internal Aspects:

The compressor is not subject to any type of internal degradation, as long as the seals are not violated through rubber stopper removal.

If not exposed to sunlight, average useful life of the rubber stoppers is 5 years. During this period they maintain the characteristics which ensure compressor sealing.

13

Compressor Handling

16.1.2 - External AspectsExternally, the compressors react according to the environmental conditions in which they are stored. The compressors must be transported to and stored in a covered facility protected on all sides as well as being protected from aggressive agents such as saline mist, dampness and dust.OBS: Dust absorbs and retains humidity, accelerating the oxidation process. In non aggressive, covered environments, the compressor is not expected to present any sign whatsoever of oxidation or any other external variations for a period of 18 (eighteen) months. It is recommended that the compressor be applied before completing 18 (eighteen) months after date of manufacture.

16.2 - Packaging

16.2.1 - Wooden

Wooden packaging maintains its normal compressor storage characteristics for 18 (eighteen) months after manufacturing date of the compressors it contains, providing that it is kept in a covered place, with side protection and ventilation.

16.2.2 - Metal bands

Metal bands follow the same behavior patterns as those described in item 16.1.2 above.

On completing the 18 month storage period, we suggest that periodic (monthly) verification is conducted to evaluate the soundness of critical items such as wood, metal bands and the external aspects of the compressor.

OBS: The compressors and respective packaging which remain for a certain time in Embraco’s stock, receive a thorough inspection before being shipped. This ensures that the compressors and packaging are in perfect condition when released.
