FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Thank you once again for your support in complying with the expectations of the Departments of Health and Education. We will continue to implement their advice and keep you informed of any changes.

At this point in time the requirement is 2 square metres distancing and continued extra cleaning for play equipment and classrooms. To ensure we comply with this advice we request that only parents of the Year One and Two students come onto the school grounds, in the afternoons from 3.00, and any parent with a pre-arranged meeting with a teacher.

The Year One, Two and FLDC parents may come onto the school site to collect their children, at the conclusion of each day. Parents may be on the school site if they have a pre-arranged meeting with a teacher, where physical distancing guidelines will be implemented.

Children must leave the school grounds immediately at the conclusion of the school day, playing on the play equipment is not permitted.

Any parents on the school site must adhere to physical distancing rules of 2 square metres and must leave the school grounds as soon as possible. Adult to adult transmission remains the critical element in preventing the spread of this virus.

Drop off at “the school gate”

This has been a highly successful initiative with parents and staff commenting on the many unexpected positive outcomes for the children. As a result we are exploring ways to continue this after the restrictions ease.

Assemblies

In Term Three and Four we will reintroduce assemblies. Assemblies provide the children opportunities for public speaking and

performing and also the positive acknowledgement of meritorious behaviour or work. They also provide parents with a glimpse of

the work covered in the classroom.

As we are restricted to 2 square metres per person on the school grounds at any one time, and to ensure that every class hosts an

assembly, assemblies will be conducted in two groups commencing Week Two of Term Three. This will effectively reduce the

number of visitors to the site and also ensure that adequate space is provided for visitors and classes. Senior classes (Years Three

to Six) and junior classes (Pre to Two) will alternate each Friday throughout the semester. Please see the attached calendar.

Once again physical distancing rules will apply and the expectation is that all visitors leave the school grounds as soon as the

assembly is concluded. All classes including the hosting class will also leave the area as soon as the assembly finishes.

Semester One Reports

You should have received, via email, the Student Semester One Reports sent on Thursday 2 July, the link to open the reports only

remains active for four weeks after being sent. It is therefore important to save or print a copy of your child’s report for future

reference. Due to the disruption of schooling for our students because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he Overall Learning Area

achievement and the components for the Learning Area sections of the report are unshaded. You will however, find comments

relating to each Learning Area and your child’s progress and effort, for this semester, on the report.

If you have not received the report please call the office, you may need to update your details.

Wattle Two

Thank you to Miss Tloczek for her wonderful contribution to the education and support of the children in Wattle Two. It has been

a pleasure to have her in the school. We welcome back Miss DiFonzo for the remainder of the year.

Holidays

Have a safe and restful holiday. The school term begins for the children on Tuesday 21 July, Monday is a school development day.

Thank you once again as we continue to make decisions to provide a safe environment for all of our community. Sue Martin Principal

WATTLE 10 KANGAS We are all looking forward to spending some time with our families over the school holi-days and returning refreshed for a new term. We welcome Ayesha to our class. Here are some photos of most of us that have been taken while we have been busily learning to ex-plore, create, build, construct, make decisions, try new things, talk to each other, listen, consider other ideas, negotiate, express feelings, share, take turns, count, sort , write and problem solve. Some things we do on our own, others in small groups and sometimes we do things all together.

Wonderful Wattle One

Australians can be an ingenious bunch. Here are some of the best inventions to have come

out of the nation. We have enjoyed researching these inventions that have changed the

world!

Black box flight recorder: The black box flight recorder has helped make commercial air

travel the world’s safest form of travel. It was invented by Australian scientist Dr David

Warren.

Spray-on skin: In 1999, Perth-based plastic surgeon Professor Fiona Wood patented

her spray-on skin technique.

Polymer bank notes: Plastic bank notes were developed in a combined effort by the

Reserve Bank of Australia and CSIRO in the 1980s.

Cochlear implant (bionic ear): Professor Graeme Clark invented the first bionic ear

Melbourne University in the 1970s – the first prototype was implanted in a person in

1978.

Wi-Fi technology: In 1992 John O’ Sullivan and the CSIRO developed Wi-Fi

technology, used by more than a billion people around the world today.

SCHOOL NEWS

After an interesting start to the year, Sheoak Four have settled into Term Two very well.

We have been working on our fluency with our Times Tables and explored procedure

writing, tying this into our Design and Technology focus, solar pizza ovens. The students

thoroughly enjoyed the plan, make and evaluate process and came up with some

incredible designs. For Digital Technology, the students made their own Lego mazes and

created code to program their Spheros. They worked in partners and showed some

fantastic collaborative skills and problem solving.

The students in Sheoak 4 have been working very hard during handwriting sessions to develop their joined cursive writing style, focussing on formation, spacing and slope. We have seen some amazing improvements in presentation and all the students are proud of their efforts. Eight students have received their certificates to certify they have mastered joined writing. We are sure to see more students receiving their certificates very soon.

WATTLE 8

After a bit of a rocky start our Wattle 8 superstars have had a fabulous, busy and fun filled Term Two. The resilience and independence displayed by all the children has been amazing and we are so very proud of them all. As part of our Literacy program we have read many different stories over the term including Possum Magic, Wombat Stew, The Very Cranky Bear and Giraffes Can’t Dance to name a few. We have loved them all but The Gruffalo may have been the overall favourite. Some wonderful Art pieces have been inspired by the stories read. The story of The Snail and The Whale led us to investigate the famous artist Wassily Kandinsky and the children created their amazing “Kandinsky” inspired snails. During Sounds Write lessons the children have been working collaboratively with a partner to find the words needed to build and write sentences. Wow they are so clever! We wish everyone a wonderful and happy holiday and we all look forward to what Term Three will bring. Ms Abbott Wattle 8 Teacher

SCIENCE

National Science Week 15-23 August

The theme for National Science Week 2020 is Deep Blue: innovation for the future of

our oceans. Students from Pre Primary to Year Six will be engaged in a range of activities

to learn about our oceans and the many organisms that live in it. The students in Years

One to Six will draw and label a diagram of a marine species. They will also provide

information about the organism. Their posters will be displayed for their peers to read

during National Science Week. Lunchtime activities will be held in the science room

during the week.

SCHOOL NEWS

News from Banksia 1

What a busy term it has been! Last month we recognised National Reconciliation Week. After some interesting discussions, all the children in Banksia 1 collaborated to make an awesome poster to display in our classroom. We also decorated our window on National Sorry Day.

In June we recognised International Refugee Week. We read a story called 'Out' about a little girl who had to leave her country to seek asylum. This lead to some discussions about how lucky we are to live in such a safe country.

FLDC

Fun in Banksia 2

We have been learning about Australian animals in our semantics sessions. We have learnt the name, features, habitat and diet of the koala, echidna, wombat and kangaroo to name a few. Last week did some beautiful writing to create a Who Am I? game with clues for our friends to guess the animal we were describing. What fun!

What’s happening in Banksia 3

In B3 students have been having a lot of fun in music class. Children have learnt that there are four beats to a bar and how to notate them. Some children are using a dash to show a beat, two dots for two half beats and a vertical line for a rest. Others are using crotchets, quavers and rest signs for their beats. Students have created their own two bar rhythm sequence, represented it on a whiteboard and had a go at improvising using a percussion instrument.
