Using 2 beam legs on BL Driver would benefit experiments that need bright x-ray sources for diagnostic techniques

• Techniques such as x-ray radiography and x-ray Thomson scattering require bright x-ray sources

• Creating x-ray sources from high-Z materials requires high-irradiance laser pulses

• This will improve current experiments as well as open a new class of experiments involving bright x-ray sources

Beam delays longer than current PLAS limitations can be used to increase delays between multiple observations

on a single shot

• Beneficial to experiments using multiple diagnostic techniques

By Q4 FY12

• Backlighter driver going down shortly• BL driver to use Main regen

– Add improved timing diagnostics• Could result in better than 100 ps accuracy for very

long delays

– Improved stability– Improved spatial profile

• Possible increase in energy

Proposal for next FY

• Add 64 mm amplifier to BL driver– Current configuration of SSD driver (LARA and 64

mm amp)– Increased Energy available

Future possibilities

• 2 leg Limited option– Allows for BL to run 2 specific legs– Leg 1 and 3 OR Legs 2 and 3– Cost unknown but limited downtime to BL

• Redo A-split – ~$ 1 mil, large amount of downtime

• Duplicate 1-split- similar cost, possibly less downtime

• 3 drivers – very costly, space issues

Summary

• Recommendations completed or underway– Increased accuracy in driver-to-driver timing for

long driver delays– 10 additional SG8 phase plates– Improved BL driver performance

• New or continued recommendations– Independent operation of 3 beam legs– Imaging UVTS– Foreground illumination in TVS viewers

Update on improved timing for long delays between drivers

• Currently using longer sweep speed on P510s which has improved timing accuracy

• LLE is continuing to improve this by adding a timing scope on the front end– Could result in better than 100 ps accuracy for

very long delays
