Thank You from a Resident

I wish to express my thanks and appreciation to my friends here at Londonderry Village who called and visited me in the Leffler Care unit, and still cheer me on as I recover. You’re the best! God Bless you.

Thank You from a Resident

Many thanks to all the persons who came to my aid when I fainted. A special thank you to Patti – her hugs are the best! After returning from the hospital, I appreciated the visit of The Sunshine Committee and the flowers they brought. You couldn’t have better friends than those at Londonderry Village!

Happy New Year to the residents and staff of Londonderry Village, which now numbers over a thousand folks!

The month of January is thought to be named after the Roman god, Janus. In the mythology of ancient Rome, Janus was the god of beginnings, transitions, and endings. As such, he was typically depicted as having two faces…one looking backward, and the other looking to the future. Thus, January is often the month where we both reflect on the events of the previous year, and also anticipate the happenings of the year ahead.

The year 2017 was a good one for this community. We officially changed our name to Londonderry Village on March 1st…a change that has been very well accepted by our constituency. Over the summer and fall months, we filmed and released two videos – a catchy music video featuring our residents and staff in a variety of on-campus locales, and also a meaningful interpretational video focusing on our Good Samaritan Fund. Also in the Fall, we opened the second phase of our Wheaton Apartment building, and integrated over 20 new residents into our community.

In 2018, we will lay the foundation for a successful future. We plan to begin construction on 2 new Green Houses, as well as a medical clinic addition to the Community Center. We will also be working with SFCS Architects on a Master Site Planning exercise that will guide our healthcare and independent living growth for the next several years. Finally, we will be working with Mosteller Consultants (from the Reading area) on a complete overhaul of our staff job descriptions, performance appraisals, and compensation policies.

Finally, in terms of (happy!) endings, I would like to wish Dietary Aide Janielle “Jan” Heeter a happy retirement. Jan has been with us for many years, dependably attending to the food service needs of residents in all three levels of care. Jan tried hard to avoid the limelight, but she was a ‘talker’ who also liked to ‘kid’ and be ‘kidded’. I will miss her feisty spirit.

Thanks for Listening!

Jeff Shireman, President

Journeys with June — March 5

Happy New Year, “travelers”! My wish for you is that the New Year may be

healthy enough so you can continue to enjoy our day trips that were listed

in the December edition—hoping to see many returning folks!

Monday, March 5—A 10:50 a.m. departure for Country Fare Restaurant east of Myerstown.

Individual checks. Then onto the David A. Dorsey Museum of Biblical Archeology at the Evangelical

School of Theology (that’s a mouthful)! It’s located in a 4-room Israeli house from about 500 B.C.

Artifacts (the B.C. era) will be explained in a 25-minute talk, followed by a 45 minute tour. Sounds

interesting! Because of size, only one small bus (14) will be going. If there is lots more interest,

I will set up a second trip later in March. The cost is $ 8.00 p.p. for our “Ancient History” experience.

The reservation slip appears in this newsletter. Please date your check the day you reserve.

Depending on interest, if there is a need for another trip in March, the reservation slip will be

in the February newsletter.

Please hand in your reservation slips ASAP—thanks!

...Thanks from June

GAIN Service Project— January 18

GAIN is a global project where volunteers do tasks that to help relieve

suffering, restore dignity, reveal hope, and bring joy to the toughest places on earth. Easy to learn

tasks are done sitting down so anyone can enjoy. It’s a time to catch up with friends as you are

seated several at a table. We work in a warehouse and can get chilly so please wear lots of layers.

After volunteering, we will head to Silver Springs Family Restaurant for lunch at noon before

returning to Londonderry Village. Reservations required; sign up in this newsletter. Bus leaves

Snell CC entrance at 8:30 a.m. Questions: call Mary Lee at ext. 3186.

Attention All Residents and Volunteer Committees

Copying, stapling, etc. needs to be done in the computer/business center provided for resident and volunteer use. This computer/business center is located in the Stoneback Library. All volunteer group leaders and LV Auxiliary volunteers are able to use the copy machine in this location for their projects. Our receptionists have been asked to do some of the larger, time consuming copying tasks on a repeated basis and this takes time away from the responsibilities which they must do. Please also note that the Business Office and Administrative Office copiers are for staff use only as these copiers need to be available for staff tasks. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. And, thank you for following this procedure adjustment. Questions: call Mary Lee at ext. 3186.

Holiday Guest House Rental

The 2018 flyer for the Holiday Guest House Rental was placed in the IL Mail Boxes for our LV resident’s consideration. We will hold the Holiday Rental drawing on Monday, January 8, 2018 during the ILC Quarterly meeting. Talk with your families and friends to see if they would like to visit during the holiday season during 2018. Questions can be directed to Mary Lee at 3186.

Country View Grocery store on a regular schedule. We will be adding a trip to Hershey Giant at

10:00 a.m. The new schedule is: 8:00 a.m. Weis Markets; 9:15 a.m. Redner’s Market; and

10:00 a.m. Hershey Giant Store. Bus will leave from the Snell CC entrance.

My first thought is to wish all of you an upcoming year filled with happiness and a volume of sincere thanks for all of the blessings that fall upon us on a daily basis. A short while ago, I managed to glue Carroll to a chair for us to discuss the 2017 endeavors in terms of 2018 expectations. I wanted to share our conclusions with you. We have been pleased with your responses on our SPECIAL DAYS. We intend to continue with these and in honor of the upcoming snow falls we will be offering COCONUT specialties in the month of January. We also reviewed your response to accelerated HOAGIE availability and decided to alternate Italian and American from Country View each month with a one-month absence between.

The CUSTOMERS DELIVERY SERVICE was getting off to a good start. Though it was welcomed we have decided our experiment offered until December of 2017 seemed to sometimes encourage confusion. Therefore, while we are still hopeful that you will share your grocery requests for us to fill we are not planning to develop a formal program.

We have enjoyed meeting so many of you in this past year.

Greeting Cards!

Looking forward to helping you with your greeting card needs this year. Stop by the Convenience Store often for some surprises and special sales! We have a large selection available that will fit any occasion. Bring some cheer to someone this year with a special greeting card.
