ABOUT

INDEPENDENT DIPLOMAT (ID) is a unique non-profit venture in the world of internationalrelations, diplomacy and conflict prevention. We deliver advice and assistance to democratic governments and political groups across the three pillars of contemporary diplomacy: political and diplomatic strategy, international law and public diplomacy. We work inside the diplomatic system to ensure that the voices of the people most affected by international decisions are heard in the negotiations about their futures.

ID is an independent organization and only works with those who support democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

“ID has helped us to level the playing field by advising on diplomatic strategy, securing press coverage, and helping us get a seat at the table.”

– H.E. Tony de Brum Foreign Minister, Republic of the Marshall Islands

Lying an average of just two meters (6 feet) above sea level, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) faces an existential threat from climate change. RMI and the 42-member Alliance of Small Island States are engaged in negotiations on a new international climate change agreement, due to be adopted in Paris in December 2015. But they often lack the human and financial capacity, negotiating expertise and geopolitical leverage to influence the negotiated outcomes in their favor. Since 2009, Independent Diplomat has helped the RMI Government to become a leading international voice for the climate-vulnerable, and to secure outcomes that will ultimately determine the future.

“ID has helped us to strengthen our voice at the United Nations.”

– Dr. Najib Ghadbian US Representative, Syrian National Coalition

The National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces (Syrian Coalition) was formed in November 2012 in an effort to unite all Syrians committed to a peaceful, pluralistic and democratic future for their country, free of dictatorship and extremism. The Coalition aims to put an end to the decades long oppression suffered at the hands of the Assad regime and to achieve a political transition to democracy. ID’s work has strengthened the Syrian Coalition’s voice globally and facilitated its communications with the UN Security Council and other key international bodies on issues related to cross- border humanitarian access, international justice, chemical weapons, civilian protection and more.

“Independent Diplomat has always supported us. They seek to understand our needs and think creatively with us about how best to achieve our objectives.”

– Mohamed Behi Yonis Foreign Minister, Republic of Somaliland

Somaliland gained independence in 1960 and joined with Italy’s former Somali colony to form the Republic of Somalia. The union was a disaster for Somaliland, eventually leading to civil war. Somaliland declared independence in 1991 and has since managed to build a stable and peaceful society in a volatile region. Its democratically-elected government seeks to achieve international recognition as an independent state, secure more development assistance and clarify its future relationship with Somalia through the Somaliland - Somalia Dialogue established in 2012. ID has worked with Somaliland since 2006 to help it achieve these goals.

“ID sat down with us, listened carefully to our story, and understood our objectives.”

– Dr. Elias Jeyarajah Senior Vice President, USTPAC

USTPAC is an advocacy organization that seeks to end the decades-long ethnic conflict between Sri Lanka’s Sinhala and Tamil communities. It pursues justice for atrocities committed disproportionately against Tamils during and after Sri Lanka’s brutal civil war concluded in 2009. Looking forward, USTPAC strives for a negotiated political settlement to reform the country’s institutions and governance structures that fueled the conflict and human rights violations.

ID has advised USTPAC since 2011 on how it engages with key interlocutors both in the US and international community through diplomatic advocacy, political strategy and public diplomacy. ID has assisted USTPAC to advocate for these objectives in the Human Rights Council in order to achieve truth, justice, reparations and enduring peace in the country.

“ID’s creative approach to diplomacy and knowledge of the UN system have helped us take a more comprehensive message to more people within the diplomatic system.”

– Emhamed Khadad MINURSO Coordinator, Frente POLISARIO

Western Sahara is the last colony in Africa, occupied for forty years by the Kingdom of Morocco. A 2,700km sand “berm” divides the people of Western Sahara between a brutal Moroccan occupation and the harsh desert refugee camps of southwest Algeria. Despite having international law on their side, for decades the Saharawi people have been waiting to exercise their right to self-determination through a referendum that was promised to them by the United Nations in 1991.

ID works with the Government of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and its political leadership, the Frente POLISARIO, on its objective of securing a process of self-determination. ID also provides advice on issues related to the protection of human rights and prevention of the illegal exploitation of the rich natural resources of Western Sahara.
