From unique shops to 20 heritage attractions that played a key role in shaping the future of our nation, it’s all here in a great hometown atmosphere. Just east of Kansas City and the 4th largest city in the state, Independence is the home of President Harry Truman and the beginning of the Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails. It’s a place for fun where you can experience terrific shopping, wonderful restaurants, numerous accommodation choices, and a variety of exciting attractions and outdoor activities. The Independence Events Center is home of CHL Missouri Mavericks Hockey, MISL Missouri Comets Indoor Soccer, concerts, and other entertainment programs.

Rolling hills and dramatic bluffs provide a beautiful landscape when you visit Independence.

Located in west central Missouri just minutes from downtown Kansas City, four hours north of Branson and four hours west of St. Louis, it is easily accessed from I-70 and I-435. The 4th largest city in Missouri with a population of 122,000, we offer a blend of hometown heritage with contemporary amenities.

The Harry S Truman National Historic Site Visitor Center, located on the southeast corner of Truman Road and Main Street in the historic downtown, also serves as the Visitor Center for the city. Since its dedication in 1957, the Truman Library has welcomed nearly 8 million visitors and attracts approximately 100,000 people annually. Hailed as America’s “best presidential museum” (Dallas Morning News), the Truman Library offers theaters, a Museum Store, and dozens of interactive and hands-on exhibits designed for the entire family. Step into a replica of President Truman’s Oval Office, test your presidential potential in Decision Theaters, and experience some of the most dramatic moments in American history. The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is one of 13 presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration.

The final stop in Truman’s 1948 Whistlestop Campaign. After leaving the Presidency in January, 1953, he was welcomed home here by 8,500 admirers. Today, the depot is an Amtrak stop and home to the Jackson County Genealogical Society Research Library, (816) 252-8128.

In 1926 this facility was erected through the efforts of Harry Truman and other civic leaders as a tribute to those who died in WWI. Renovated and rededicated in 2002, it serves as a War Memorial and recreation center. Included are Veterans Hall and Video Program, meeting and banquet space, plus an auditorium and gymnasium.

Beginning at the Truman Home Ticket Center, Main & Truman Rds., the 2.7 mile trail includes 43 plaques imbedded in the sidewalks through the Truman District and neighborhood. A brochure is available at key sites.

The dungeon-like cells of the 1859 Jail housed thousands of prisoners during the bloodiest time in Jackson County’s history. Hear the stories of the famous to the infamous, including Frank James and William Clark Quantrill. Experience pioneer justice in the 1859 Jail and Marshal’s Home Museum. An 1870s schoolhouse completes the site. A combination ticket is available with Bingham-Waggoner Estate, Vaile Mansion and National Frontier Trails Museum for a reduced fee.

Built in 1852 along the 1846 alignment of the Santa Fe Trail, this magnificent home was once owned by George C. Bingham, famed Civil War artist. It was also home to the Waggoner family, founders of Waggoner Gates Mill, from 1879-1976. Extensively renovated in the 1890s, it contains many original furnishings and accessories. Gift shop located in Carriage House. A combination ticket is available with Vaile Mansion,1859 Jail & Marshal’s Home and National Frontier Trails Museum for a reduced fee.

See certified wagon swales (ruts) by entering at the back of Bingham-Waggoner parking lot. Across the foot bridge is a one-quarter mile trail with interpretive signs focusing on the Santa Fe two-way international trade route.

Built in 1879, the depot is believed to be the oldest two-story frame depot remaining in Missouri. It was moved to the National Frontier Trails Museum Campus in 1996.

One of a kind museum pays tribute to the Victorian-era art of hair jewelry and wreaths with 300 framed hair wreaths and over 2,000 pieces of jewelry made of hair. In the 1800s, family members would craft these keep-sakes from locks of their loved one’s hair.

This 30-room mansion was built by frontier business tycoon Harvey Vaile in 1881. Recognized as one of the finest examples of Second Empire Victorian architecture in the U.S., the opulent estate boasted conveniences such as flushing toilets, a built-in 6,000 gallon water tank, and a 48,000 gallon wine cellar. The Temple and Auditorium serve as the international headquarters for Community of Christ, a worldwide Christian denomination with approximately a quarter of a million members. Audio tours available at Temple for individuals and small groups – 30-35 minutes long. Go at your own pace.

This church sits on the original temple lot dedicated by Joseph Smith in 1831. Two originally inscribed cornerstone markers displayed in the Visitors Center were found in 1929 during an excavation for the spot of a proposed temple.

First CHristiAn CHurCH, 125 S. Pleasant (between Lexington and Kansas)In 1835, more than 30 pioneers met in the log cabin home of Oliver and Ann Caldwell to establish the first Christian Church in Independence, and second in Jackson County. It has grown from a one-room log structure built in 1836 on the corner of Lynn and Walnutto the large brick building used today.

In 1913, the Liberty Street Cumberland Presbyterian Church (established in 1826) and the First Presbyterian Church (established in 1841) merged. Harry Truman attended Sunday School and met Bess Wallace here.

First united MetHOdist CHurCH 400 W. Maple (Northwest corner of Maple and Spring)

J.D. Hulse, a circuit rider organized a group in 1835 which settled at its present location on the corner of Maple & Spring. This is the first Methodist church established in Jackson County.

seCOnd bAptist CHurCH 116 E. White Oak Ave. (Northeast corner of White Oak and Main)

Said to be the oldest African-American church in Missouri, organized in 1864 by a group that first met in 1861 in a one-room house. The cornerstone for the current building was laid in 1886.

With the official cornerstone laid on April 6, 1888, the church opened in March, 1892. The first Community of Christ (RLDS) congregation in the area, it created the internationally renowned Independence Messiah Choir in 1916. tours Hours: 8am-4pm, Mon-Fri or by appointment.

Christmas is very special in Independence. With all sites participating in over 30 events in “Spirit of Christmas Past,” from Thanksgiving to New Year’s, the Vaile Mansion, Bingham-Waggoner Estate and 1859 Marshal’s Home are decorated festively and offer a special tour package. The Historic Square is highlighted by the Mayor’s Christmas Tree. There are open houses, holiday concerts, and puppet shows, plus the numerous shops on the Square provide excellent choices for Christmas shopping.
