A Change For A Safer World

For every advancement made, there has

always been negative fallout. Inspite of

mankind making quantum leaps in the

fields of medicine, communication and

scientific exploration, we seem to be more at

risk than ever. Are we ever really safe?

Keeping this driving need in mind, we

formulated a dictum and the idea of our

DFC initiative: Be Aware, Be Safe.

Creating awareness for a safer world was

our action plan and to increase the outreach,

SAFETY ON ALL FRONTS

•To be safe on the

streets

•To be safe from

fire hazards

•To be safe in

cyberspace

•To be safe from

gender related

crimes.

WE NOTICED TRAFFIC RULES BEING VIOLATED IN FRONT OF OUR SCHOOL AND WE STEPPED OUT ONTO THE BUSY KOLKATA

STREETS TO CREATE AWARENESS AND TEACH SAFETY RULES ON THE ROAD

NO SEAT BELT!

WE COLLABORATED WITH THE KOLKATA POLICE TO HELP US STOP PEOPLE FROM

BREAKING TRAFFIC RULES

A student of MHS Class VIII B says ”It was a great experience. We got to learn a lot from the

activity, as we taught others to be safe, we learnt to be safe ourselves.”

FIRE SAFETY INITIATIVE & MEASURES

• A fire drill conducted on 15th

September, 2014• 2000 students and teachers evacuated the school premises

• Time taken to evacuate the building 5-6 minutes

FIRE SAFETY DRILLS• We organized awareness programs for placement of safety alarms and water pipes

• We attended demonstrations of how the fire equipment is used

• Fire exit plans were explained to all

AWARENESS SESSION FOR 400 STUDENTS ON FIRE SAFETY

• Interactive Sessions were conducted by us in the months of August and September, 2014 by Co-ordinator

• Co-ordinator spoke of measures to take in emergency situations

• Students responded with queries and feedback

• Students urged to hold awareness sessions in their houses and complexes

WE FELT THAT THE CYBER WORLD

IS FULL OF RISKS AND DANGERS.

Doodles created by our students and

handed out to 330 students and their

We invited Mr. Sandeep Sengupta , an IT Professional from the Indian School of Ethical Hacking , to address 168 students of

class VIII. He made us aware of the dangers of the Cyber World and safety measures that we should take.

We created a web page.

I have downloaded many of the antiviruses that Mr. Sengupta advised us to, in my phone to stay as safe as possible.

WE CONDUCTED A CAMPAIGN TO RAISE AWARENESS

ON THE NEED FOR CYBER SAFETY

We created a page on Facebook outlining these risks. We’ve currently got 77 followers.https://www.facebook.com/pages/CYBER-SAFETY/603477969771850

We addressed 340 students (11-13 years) of Classes VI and VII and put up posters in their classrooms.

I will never accept friend requests again from unknown people after hearing about the dangers.

- Niveta Sangani, Class VI

The interactive session with the Class VIIIs had a great impact on me. I shall never reveal any personal information online.

- Tanvi Chandak, Class VII

On 6th September, we visited an NGO called Ektaara. It provides education in various fields to underprivileged people,

especially women. Our main objective was to promote awareness about gender-

safety, as globally women are becoming more and more unsafe in recent times.

We

Showed…..We Enacted…

They Listened.They Absorbed.

They Assimilated.To block punches

To kick out

To free themselves

TO FIGHT BACK

….They Followed.

How to protect yourself in public placesTo shout and draw attentionTo walk tall and confidentlyTo do the same to help others if possible.

Manjushmita,the

Facilitator at

Ektara said,

We leave them empowered and capable of protecting

themselves

“Underprivileged children are more at risk because of the environment they come from. Workshops like this are relevant and useful. Instead of expecting others to make a change, the girls need to be combat ready.”

OUR LEGACY• We faced obstacles. We also managed to touch lives.

• For every passing motorist that ignored us schoolgirls, there was a driver who sheepishly clipped on his safety belt. He was our motivator.

• For every NGO student who was distracted and preoccupied, there were two or three girls who followed our every karate stance and move and jotted down instructions. She was our inspiration.

• For every girl who happily posts selfies on Facebook, now there are other students who constantly upgrade privacy settings. She is our change.

• We try and will continue trying to impact lives. Because the need to be aware and be safe is always going to remain.
