We all Know!!

-Mother nature has bestowed us with all that is required to live a beautiful life.

-as we love our own mother for the love & care she give us unconditionally.

-So we ought to respect & love our mother nature too!!

Page 3: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

Then why do we do this to our mother earth!!

Page 4: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

Charity begins at home they say!!

We , the students of St.Xavier decided to search our own backyardi.e our own school premises to see how we are taking care of it.

Page 5: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

Friends, we along with our teacher had a brief round of school premises & found that .

•Wastes are thrown here & there in & around the campus.•No proper system for disposing off the waste.•Poor discipline & awareness amongst students, teachers & staff to maintain cleanliness.

Page 6: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

How can we ,the future of this world, change the world

for better , if can’t change ourselves for better!!

Thus, came the initiative which we called “ZERO GARBAGE” campaign!!

We realized how we are neglecting our own environment & allowing litter to pollute our premises.

Why don’t

you use me?

Formation of “Zero Garbage” team

•Team : students of class 9th A along with our guide Class teacher Mrs.Shweta Mudliar & Mentor Principal Mrs.

•Dream : How nice it would be to have a clean surrounding with no pollution to environment .

•Vision : Together we can bring about beautiful changes.

Page 8: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

Step 1:

•It was decided to observe, discuss & collect all the information to make our premises garbage free

•Following are the steps taken •[1] Understanding the garbage disposal methods employed all over the world. We collected information from internet & other sources.

•[2] Looking around premises to identify the facilities or the lack of the same for garbage disposal.

•[3] Talking to the housekeepers responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of school premises to gauge their understanding on garbage disposal

Page 9: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

What is a Garbage

Garbage is Unavoidable by-product of most human activity.

Substances or objects which are disposed of or are intended to be disposed of or are required to be disposed of by the provisions of national law.

Garbage disposal tipsFirst lesson in garbage disposal is

i.e don’t create garbage. If necessary,keep it minimum.Reuse & recycle if possible.

Page 11: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

Broad Types of garbage produced in world

A. Generation and Characteristics

Municipal Solid Waste

Industrial Solid Waste

Agricultural Waste and Residues

Hazardous Waste

Nuclear Waste

Types of garbageAverage figures of types of waste produced in world

So we need to take our 1st lesson seriously.Don’t produce waste. Reduce , reuse &Recycle whatever is produced

Page 13: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

Garbage produced in our school

•school accumulates a lot of waste.

•Papers.•Pencil waste.•Chalk pieces & chalk dust.•Junk food wrappers.•Old furniture.•Dried leaves fallen from trees.•Chemicals from our lab.•E-waste from computer section.

Ways of Garbage disposal

Some of the methods employed for solid waste disposal

Composting

Anaerobic digestion

Gasification

incineration

Composting

treating solid waste in which organic material is broken down by microorganisms in the presence of oxygen to a point where it can be safely stored, handled and applied to the environment.

essential part of reducing household wastes, garden wastes.

can be done inexpensively by every household and produce a product -- finished compost or humus -- that can benefit the environment as a natural fertilizer for gardening and farming.

Page 17: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

Anaerobic digestion Anaerobic digestion is a series of processes in which

microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen, used for industrial or domestic purposes to manage waste and/or to release energy.

Anaerobic digestion is widely used as a renewable energy source because the process produces a methane and carbon dioxide rich biogas suitable for energy production, helping to replace fossil fuels. The nutrient-rich digestate which is also produced can be used as fertilizer.

Page 18: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

Gasification

Gasification is a process that converts carbonaceous materials, such as coal, petroleum, biofuel, or biomass, into carbon monoxide and hydrogen by reacting the raw material, such as house waste, or compost at high temperatures with a controlled amount of oxygen and/or steam. The resulting gas mixture is called synthesis gas or Syn-gas and is itself a fuel. Gasification is a method for extracting energy from many different types of organic materials.

Page 19: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

Incineration

Incineration is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of organic substances contained in waste materials.

Incineration of waste materials converts the waste into ash, flue gas, and heat.

Incinerators reduce the mass of the original waste by 80–85 % and the volume by 95-96 %.

Step 2:

•Armed with the knowledge on garbage disposal & bylaws, we set about to find out solutions to make our premises garbage free.

•Following are the steps taken •[1] classroom seasons to spread awareness about garbage disposal.

•[2] Finding out the present facilities for Garbage storage & disposal in school.

•[3] Discussion with Housekeepers, fellow students , teachers, staff to build awareness & passion for cleanliness.

•[4] Discussion with School management to share the findings & seeking support for our campaign.

operational

Sensitized everyone in the school not to generate

waste & if generated ,to dispose in eco friendly way.

Major steps taken under “Zero Garbage” campaign

•Self educating world’s best practices for generating , management & disposal of wastes.

•Scanning our premises & people to gauge the present level of cleanliness & awareness about cleanliness

•Listing down Required Vs Actual to achieve the Zero Garbage target.

•Generating awareness by class room sessions, discussions, live demonstrations on garbage management.Major tips to students: recycle papers, have a reuse bin in all class rooms.have a swap box to deposit items that have no longer want and are broken or damaged..

Page 28: IND-2012-277 St.Xavier’s High School -Zero Garbage Campaign

Major steps taken under “Zero Garbage” campaign

•Bringing to the notice of school management about the shortcoming in resources to achieve garbage free school premises.•Taking action on the shortcomings listed

•Finally, scanning our premises again to see the results of the effort.

•Periodic audit once in a week will be done by our team to ensure cleanliness. Problems will be reported to school management.
