tramck residents havebeen subject to duringheavy rainstorms.Mark Ragsdale, the Di-

rector of Public Servicesfor Hamtramck, pointsout the need for an up-grade. The city’s com-bined sewer system isprimarily designed tohandle sewage, not rain-water, and the discussionof whether or not to im-prove the lines wasbrought up as early asthe 1950s. Now, he says, it’s not a

question of whether ornot it would be nice to im-prove the lines -- it’s a ne-cessity.For many local stores,

however, the project hasbeen an economic catas-trophe. When askedabout the effects of con-struction on their busi-nesses, owners likeMohammed give hardnumbers. Where the Yemen Bar-

ber Shop used to make$900 - $1,000 per week,he says it now barelybreaks $250. Mohamed Isaa of Zaid

Travel Inc. says thatwhere the business oncetook in $1,000 a week, itnow collects closer to$100. Thabit Al-Murisa, owner

of Al Amal Supermarket, speaks of the hours lostin picking up products, ofhaving to make four orfive-hour trips to buymilk, bread, and chips in-

stead of having them de-livered straight to hisdoor.Mutea Mozeb, a

butcher at HamtramckCity Market, talks of halfthe shop’s orders not ar-riving at all.Not every business

owner has been affectedto the same degree.Businesses on the edgeof the construction, likeSheeba Restaurant, seem to have hardlybeen touched, and shopsthat have had years tobuild a customer basehave plodded on.Nomran Alhaleni of

Habbibi Services sayshis store is one such suc-cess story, and althoughhe admitted he has lostsome money, he believesthe project is in the gen-eral interest of the city. But his positive outlookis rare. For Mohammed, the

project may spell the endof his practice. The 13-year resident of Ham-tramck shakes his head, uncertain, when askedwhether the Yeman Bar-ber Shop will survive. “We had just two cus-

tomers today,” he sighs.“I can’t even make therent. I have a family.” Mohammed gestures

to a fellow barber, “He

has a family. I have re-sponsibilities.” He points to a license

on the far wall. “I can’teven renew my license,my taxes -- I can’t evendo that,” Mohammedsaid.Meanwhile, the con-

struction lingers. The lastfew weeks have seen thework come to a halt asconstruction workerswait for the concrete on anew underground storagetank to cure.

“Both lanes are ontrack to open by the timeschool starts,” saysRagsdale, “even if it’sjust temporary pavementat first.” The project should be

entirely completed, hesaid, by early September. For now, however, Mo-hammed and others likehim are forced to keepwaiting.Waiting for work.

In Our Opinion

Give the HamtramckPublic School Districtcredit for sticking to itsprinciples (sorry, no punintended). The district stood up

to a legal challengeposed by former SchoolBoardmember Moham-mad Huda. Huda waskicked off the board lastJanuary after a privateinvestigator turned overa mountain of evidenceshowing that Huda wasnot a resident of the city. That revelation fol-

lowed an investigation by

The Review that turnedup similar evidence. But despite this over-

whelming evidence,Huda went to court andsued the district. Thou-sands of dollars later, aWayne County CircuitCourt judge not onlyagreed with the district, but also said Huda per-jured himself when hefiled to become a candi-date and claimed to be aresident. That admonishment

clearly opens the doorfor the district to seek

criminal prosecution, which it should do with-out hesitation. We were already fed

up with certain candi-dates trying to manipu-late our elections inrecent years by illegallyhandling absentee bal-lots.And now there is this

ultimate betrayal of thepublic’s trust.Thankfully, the public

school district decidedto stand up to this as-sault on the integrity ofour elections.
