WHAT IF TOMORROW’S

HEADLINES READ…

DATA REVEALS THAT WV SCHOOLS ARE PERFORMING JUST BELOW THE MIDDLE

THE STATES HIGHEST PROFICIENCY RATES ARE IN GRADES 6-9

BUT STILL BARELY MAKING IT TO 50%

What do we need to do differently ?

LEARNING IN THE FAST

LANE

Page 19: INCREASING PROFICIENCY FOR ALL STUDENTS RESA 3 PRINCIPAL FORUM 2014

LEARNING IN THE FAST LANE

• Read the introduction of the book on page 1

• Ask yourself the following questions

• What is the approach my school is taking to meet the needs of struggling students?

• Is it working? Are the struggling students on the road to academic success, or are

they falling further behind?

Page 20: INCREASING PROFICIENCY FOR ALL STUDENTS RESA 3 PRINCIPAL FORUM 2014

Traditional Remedial Approaches

• Focus on drilling isolated skills that bear little resemblance to current curriculum

• Those students who are deemed the furthest behind, are the furthest removed from the current curriculum

• We spend significant amounts of time teaching in reverse, and then ask why students are not catching up to their peers

Page 21: INCREASING PROFICIENCY FOR ALL STUDENTS RESA 3 PRINCIPAL FORUM 2014

Acceleration Overarching Practices

Addresses GAPS in all academic areas

And all in the CONTEXT OF NEW LEARNING

All in the CONTEXT of grade level standards

Page 22: INCREASING PROFICIENCY FOR ALL STUDENTS RESA 3 PRINCIPAL FORUM 2014

What is so special about In the context of new learning?

• Instead of addressing gaps in the context of new learning and helping students succeed in class today, remedial programs largely engage students in activities that connect to standards from years ago.

•Remediation pounds away at the past

Page 23: INCREASING PROFICIENCY FOR ALL STUDENTS RESA 3 PRINCIPAL FORUM 2014

Acceleration

Jump starts underperforming students

into learning new concepts before their

classmates even begin

Page 24: INCREASING PROFICIENCY FOR ALL STUDENTS RESA 3 PRINCIPAL FORUM 2014

Benefits of Acceleration Groups

• Real world relevance, purpose of the concept, and critical vocabulary development

• The basic skills needed to master the concept

• The new skills needed to master the concept

• The big picture of where instruction is going

Page 25: INCREASING PROFICIENCY FOR ALL STUDENTS RESA 3 PRINCIPAL FORUM 2014

Remediation vs Acceleration

Remediation

•Mastering concepts of the past

Acceleration

•Prepares students for success in the present

Page 26: INCREASING PROFICIENCY FOR ALL STUDENTS RESA 3 PRINCIPAL FORUM 2014

Acceleration Framework

•Thought provoking hands on activity that encompasses the big idea of the standard

•Clearly articulate the learning goal and expectation

Page 27: INCREASING PROFICIENCY FOR ALL STUDENTS RESA 3 PRINCIPAL FORUM 2014

“ Students can hit just about any target that they know about, and that sits still for them”

-Rick Stiggins

Page 28: INCREASING PROFICIENCY FOR ALL STUDENTS RESA 3 PRINCIPAL FORUM 2014

Questions to consider

• What may need to change about my school’s schedule in order to accelerate instruction rather than remediate students ?

• What about the students that need special education? Can we continue to provide documented intensive services necessary for a referral?

• Am I willing to break away from the pack and try something new?
