INCREASE OF THE RESEARCH CAPABILITIES IN

OCEANOGRAPHY AND RELATED SCIENCES IN SÃO

PAULO STATE: THE ALPHA CRUCIS PROJECT

In 2007, the Center of Management and Strategic Studies

(CGEE), concluded a study named Ocean and Coastal Environments

(available in http://www.cgee.org.br/publicacoes/mar_amb_cost.php). The

objective of this study was to establish an agenda of mid- to long-term

goals in science, technology, and innovation, with the final goal of an

effective occupation of the Brazilian Marine Territory and expansion of

the Brazilian presence in the South and Equatorial Atlantic.

RECOMMENDATIONS Expansion and strengthening of research networks in order

to guide the evaluation of the mineral potential and the technological

characterization of the marine mineral resources of socioeconomic

interest;

Creation of a national center for management of oceanographic

equipment;

Establishment of the Operational Oceanography,

comprising a network of marine environmental monitoring, data

collection platforms and oceanographic database;

Conservation of the coastal zone;

Dissemination of marine science and technology

Establishment of Marine Technological Parks, which include

offshore mariculture activities, biotechnological farms, extraction of

biodiesel from biomass and marine renewable energy
